Super Mario Kart for the SNES was the first instalment of the Mario Kart franchise.  I'm not going to be too hard on this game considering this was the first game out of all the Mario Kart games.  First of all, Super Mario Kart was released in 1992 and had released approximately 8,380,000 copies.

Let's first talk about the graphics.  They are actually pretty impressive for an SNES game considering that game was created to be a 3D racer.  Although to terrain is generally flat, it is nothing to complain about because is was an early game.  The character models are pretty detailed though.  When you turn, you actually see an animation of them turning.  If you look on the bottom half of the screen you can switch between two camera angles.  You can either see a top down map of the course with the character models driving around the track so you can determine how far away they are.  You can also switch to a camera view that sits in front of your character.  You see the front of your driving character as well as the scenery, the track, and anything else behind your character.  I personally use the top down camera angle because I find it the most useful of the two camera angles at the bottom of the screen.

Now we are onto the sound.  You can tell that this game has some music that has become classic and has showed up along with the track in other Mario Kart games.  Although Super Mario Kart has some good music tracks, you will find that they show up into not just one track but maybe two others in the course of the game.  It was almost like Nintendo got lazy and decided not to make new music for all of the tracks but just copy the music and stick it to two or more tracks.  Luckily, some of the music is really good.  You also have the sounds of the engines as well as sounds of the screeching tires when you skid across the track.  It sounds pretty good as well.

Next we will talk about the addictiveness.  To me, I find that all Mario Kart games are addicting.  You can either try to get your best score on the Grand Prix, you can try to get your best time in Time Trial or you can play with your friends.  I really did not find this game all that addicting though.  It is probably because of the lack of courses or because I have grown too attached to the new Mario Kart games that it has made this game seem too basic for me to get addicted to.

There is really a story other than the fact that you play as one of eight Mario characters and try to out race all the other characters in the race and win the gold medal at the end of the Grand Prix.  This is the very basic story of the game.  If you would even call that a story.

This game honestly isn't that big.  The characters have no different abilities or speeds like later Mario Kart games.  The only difference between them is what they look like.  There are not that many tracks either, but it's not a bare minimum.  It has a total of four Grand Prix, with five tracks each.  That makes the game have twenty unique tracks to play on.  It's a pretty basic amount and nothing to et excited about but it will keep you occupied for a bit.  I was able to complete a Grand Prix in just a short time of 8 to 10 minutes.

The difficulty is a strange thing.  Either you pick 50cc which I found incredibly easy (I was always coming in first).  Or you could pick 100cc which I found much more difficult and a huge jump from 50cc.  There is really no medium difficulty setting for this game.  I found that when I play on 100cc, that AI would get smarter and try to drive in front of my to keep me from getting ahead which I found most impressive, especially for a game that was released for the SNES.

Overall, I believe that this game is a good game for the SNES.  I would not recommend it however, if you were looking for a good Super Mario Kart game to play in 2013.  I do recommend it though if you are looking for a good racing game to play for the SNES or in the RGR.  In that case, I recommend that you check this game out in the RGR or pick this game up fir your SNES.  In conclusion, I give this game a 7.5 only because it is a little bit bland and basic.  But hey, this is that game that started the wonderful Mario Kart franchise so it had to start somewhere.

Nice review. A fair opinion on the game today...

You should know that their are weight classes so to speak. I can't quite remember exactly how it's split but. I believe Yoshi, Toad and Koopa are light... Peach, Luigi and Mario are middle... Bowser and Donkey Kong are heavy.

Heavy has more speed but less acceleration, Light is opposite, Middle is middle.

Also my favorite part of this game is the battle mode!

I always find it strange when people review a game in comparison to some games that are released now.

For instance you would rate a game down calling it bland and basic when it's a game that was released like 20 years ago.

This game is a great and fun racer for it's time. You could say that all racing games from this era are "bland and basic"

This game had a lot of different modes and a bunch of different characters to choose from. Had a lot to offer in comparison to other games released around that time.

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinions then.
