Okay, if your new to Minecraft and you don't really know what to do, this Game Guide is for you. This is what I do on my Survival Game types.
 Step:1 FOOD.   As soon as I spawn, I chop some wood and make a Crafting Table. Next, I make a simple wooden sword, and go kill some cows and pigs. NOTE: Cows drop meat and leather, Pigs rarely drop meat.
 Step:2 HOUSE.  Now I chop a lot of wood, then it is off to the Crafting Table to make Wooden planks. A One-Story house that is 6 by 6 is a good starter home. Make sure it is 4 by 4 INSIDE, but 6 by 6 OUTSIDE. Put your crafting table in any corner inside your house. Make a wood shovel and a wood pickaxe. Dig a 3 by 3 square outside near your house.  Dig down like a spiral staircase wrapping around the middle, which is now a column. When you hit stone use your pick to mine the stone. You need to mine a minimum of 8 stone, so you can make a furnace. Now that you have a furnace place it next to your crafting table. If you dig sand and cook it in the furnace, you get glass so now you can have windows, and don't forget a door! In your staircase if you keep digging down, you will eventually hit a cave. Be careful, monsters lurk in caves, and they come out at night! So now kill some sheep and and chop some wood to make a bed. 
 Step: 3 DEFENSE .  A Pit around your house is good against monsters. Now you have a house, a cave, some defense, and a nice toasty bed. I hope you liked this Game Guide, and I hope it helped.
