A poll is a thread you can start to get peoples opinions on a subject, like "Do you like cheese?".
You would then make the poll and give options like "Yes" and "No".
Ot you can make a more detailed poll like "Who is your favorite action hero" then list a bunch of names for people to vote on.
You click the new poll button instead of new thread and put in options into the appropriate boxes then post as normal.
