Have you heard they found horse meat in burgers and lasagne's in Europe!

I know they eat horses in some countries in Europe, but not I hear in England UK and now they have it in their burgers.

what is your opinion on eating horse meat?

Does the idea of eating horse meat disgust you or is the mislabeling of food that upsets you more and you would be happy to eat it more if you knew that was what you were eating.

I would particularly like to hear what our Vizzed users affected in Europe think about this.

Are they bothered or is it okay for them to eat a horse?

I think the issue for a lot of people is not knowing that is what they were eating.

I think if it had been marketed openly that there was horse meat in food people were buying then it wouldn't have been as big of a deal.

I personally wouldn't choose to eat horse meat but I would probably try it at least once to see what it's like. It's not all that much different than many other kinds of meat.

Yeah, I saw that in the news, because I am European. I was shocked, but not because of horse meat in general. It's rather the fact, that they pretended those burgers and lasagne to contain the beef, that is usually in this food.

I also heard, that they have found about 70 to 100(!) percent in the lasagne. That's a way too high amount of  any meat. It is unhealthy (I know, this kind of lasagne is unhealthy anyway, but that makes it even more unhealthy.) and more important, it can't be the stuff that they write on the ingredients list, so the producers are lying to the consumers about the content of the food they are selling.

Actually I sometimes eat horse meat (especially in roulades). I don't think horse meat is bad, because there is no difference in eating horse meat or beef, pork or chicken. Those are all animals. I like animals, but I'm not a vegetarian.

It doesn't matter which food it is, the producers must give correct information about the ingredients and amounts of those, instead of putting only the cheaper stuff in it for more sales.

First of all... It's not the make of the products that have intentionally put horse meat in their products.. It's the farmers that have obviously tried to get more money by pretending something is Beef when it's Horse...

Personally the thought of eating horse meat doesn't really bother me at all... It's not like the meat will make you ill...

Though I know that a laboratory did an experiment to find out if there was anything else and they found ketamine in some products.. For those who are not aware Ketamine.. Is a horse tranquilizer..that is sometimes popular with drug users.. But isn't advised for human use...

Oh just to clarify I am from England and as far as I'm aware eating horses is never heard of over here...

I think the problem people will really have with this news is that they will now not trust what it says on the label and there will probably be a massive campaign to test every product to see if it also contains unwanted ingredients...

Like with most things though..it was blown hugely out of proportion..

Food is food as long as it's edible and it won't kill you... who cares

geeogree :
Actualy the main issue is that drugs used on horses are harmful to humans, and they have found some traces in the horsemeat.

Personaly, I care little if I ate horse. But as geeogree mentioned, people dont like being cheated. If you buy beef, you expect beef.
Its great for local butchers though, their sales are up by about 30% because there produce is local and traceable.
Tbh, most of the effected meat is "recovered", aka, the kind of stuff id feed my dog.
If its horse, they shouldnt be surprised.
For the most part, it was very low horse content, but findus lasagne was 100%
Criminals are putting cheap meat into the market and selling it as beef. I hope they get thrown in jail too.
sonicmcmuffin :
I seriously doubt its the farmers. Its the factorys that chop and prepare the meat, a lot of its coming from eastern europe. They subsidise or replace, expensive beef with cheap horse, and sell the processed meat on. A company buys it, and makes their meals, which are then sold to the shops.
Also, im sure you can eat horse here, its just not part of our culture. Horses were expensive, prized assets and companions. Same in europe, but europe had huge famines unlike britain, and so they ate their horses, and developed a taste for it.
As for not trusting labels, good. Their complacancy with it just makes it more likely theyll get screwed over.
Oh, and you cant test meat for everything, theres too much stuff out there, and itd make the finished product much more expensive.
