I looked at the other threads here in Remakes and a question popped into my head and I wondered what people's thoughts would be on it. Since Hollywood has been on a big remake and reboot boom lately, I thought of this: Are there movies that should be remade and if so, would it be better if it was remade? Is there a franchise that could be rebooted and made better?

Let's look at what came to my mind. First off, a franchise: "Halloween". Rob Zombie took a hold of the "Halloween" movies and, quite frankly, his movies suck major monkey butt. I wasn't entertained at all with them, the stories were weak, the writing was atrocious and all the new ideas put in were totally unnecessary. I'd rather watch the original "Halloween" movies 10 times than the Zombie versions once again. Another remake that bombed for me was the Nightmare on Elm Street, it just didn't work at all. The new idea how Freddy came to be was laughable and Jackie Earle Harley as Freddy just rubbed me the wrong way. He was okay, but he didn't have that right magic to it.

Those are examples of bad remakes, and also of horror movies, but there are others that are not horror movie remakes that are bad, for example Assault on Precinct 13. The original was a very simple movie and quite terrifying. The remake... not so good. They added so many twists and a big convoluted story to it that sometimes it confused me on what was going on.

Now, enough with the examples, let's cut to the chase. So here's the question:

What old time movie do you think they should remake? It can be of any genre from any time period. Do you think they can make some old classic a lot better today than they could back then or do you think they should just leave the old classics alone?

My honest opinion? I think they should leave ALL of the old horror movies alone and try and start making something original. I'm getting sick of all the horror movie remakes. If they want to remake something, they really should try and remake some of the horrendous video game movies. I would enjoy seeing Mario and Luigi get on an adventure to save Princess Peach in an actual live movie. Not that crap they made back in the day.

I'll eagerly wait for every one's opinion on this matter.

There were some remakes that they did awesome with. Star Trek and the Batman Trilogy are both awesome. I'm expecting the new Star Wars episodes to be awesome. But I will admit there were some remakes that sucked butt. The A-Team was horrible and the second Transformers was kind of stupid. If there was a remake I would want to see it would be a remake of Daredevil. He had a horrible one night stand kind of movie and he deserves a J.J. Abrams revamp.

apeman : Totally agree with you on Star Trek and the Batman movies, they were really good. I'm having my doubts about the Star Wars, though, since it got bought by Disney, so yeah...

As for Daredevil, I agree on there too. They did alright with the movie, but it could have been a lot better.

SpiderMwa : As a writer I say no… I have never thought about entering the genre of screenwriting but I think writers need to be original. I have seen a couple of the recent remakes of popular movies from the 80’s and although I admit that the 80’s were my favorite decade; they just didn’t have the same feel as the originals did. I have heard that they are remaking or are in production of remaking the RoboCop series next.

I may be in the minority here but I love the original series even though the third of the six (There were three direct to video/made for television films released after the third theatrical release) did not have Peter Weller as RoboCop. It just bothers me that there seems to be more of an emphasis on technology, special effects and or, CGI in movies now then there is on the actual stories. I think it’s a case of looking to profit on films that were successful by remaking them and it actually makes those involved in the production and or, writing seem lazy.

One remake that I thoroughly enjoyed was The Longest Yard but I admit that it would have been better had it been a continuation of the first film in some way. It was funny and obviously more modern but it would have been in some ways more compelling to see how some of the characters in the original film had looked many years later along with the current cast etc.

It is just one man’s opinion but as a writer I think it is important to see an emphasis on creativity. Following a script from something that has already been made and making little adjustments to update it more to current culture just seems lazy, uninspiring and, in some ways cheats the consumer.

I hope those who make those decisions on what gets made, remade or adapted in some way will be wise enough to leave the Rocky series alone. It would be a sacrilege if they even attempted to remake that series.

We do need more remakes are some good movies are under rated and need to have attention shined on them just to become famous again. Most good movies are spin offs of books or older movies

Well, for some things we do need remakes. If a movie has a great plot but it was not very good when it came out, there should be a remake.

sometimes old movies have a great story line but they were very limited to what as to what they could do due to a lack of technology both for stunts and CGI, so as long as the acting is first class then yes we do need more and yes they can work

I am not against remakes and I think sometimes movies should be remade. However, I think there are too many movies being remade that don't need to be remade. Movies should only be remade for a good reason. For example, if the movie is really old and has dated effects, that may be a good reason. Or, perhaps if the film was only released overseas. Movies should not be remade if the movie is relatively new or if there is no reason other than money. There probably should be far less remakes then there are at the present, but I don't think that remakes are always bad. It just depends really.

i think remakes totally ruin the originals for me. All a remake is, is an attempt to make money off of a movie when they have completely run out of ideas.

I think remakes are okay if the quality is excellent. I think the Star Trek movie was great, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else will come out in that series.

I love watching movies, in my opinion though, some movies they should never and just can't remake. I lived in that time period and it would just destroy that kind of movie if they did, and I have seen it happen. Other movies, they do a really good job of remaking, especially since they can do so much more with movies these day! The one bad thing that comes along with these movies are the VIDEO GAMES. Omg are most if not all the movie related games terrible. That's def something that needs to STOP.

It always depends on the movie in general.
Some remakes are needed.
But some should have never got them.

Well, I do like some of the remakes that are done for older movies that may have not been so interesting to me, until there was a great remake (such as the Alice in Wonderland movie). I don't think every movie needs to be remade, because some of them are great classics and should remain that way. Besides, it's like everyone has run out of good ideas so they are doing a bunch of movie remakes instead of creating NEW movies.

I don't care much for most remakes, and think it's just oversaturating the market.

It really all depends on how good the remake is, and whether or not it was worth it. If you're going to remake a movie, don't just make a shot for shot copy, change it up, add new things or ideas because nobody wants to see the same thing twice. And to all the people that auto diss remakes, The lord of the rings movie was a remake, yeah it was based off a book, but a movie had been made several years earlier that set the tone of how to movie would differ from the books

Yeah, they're some movies that does need a remake sequel or something like that, if they do, hopefully they don't make it horrible.
