Everybody is pretty much familiar with the game company SNK Playmore or simply SNK depending on what time period you grew up in. They are responsible for some of the best games and franchises during its time like Ikari, Fatal Fury and King of Fighters. However, even SNK had some games had its origins making games that today people would overlook or not think much of since Ozma Wars came out around the time when arcades were in their early stages of life (1979) before graphics started to become a huge aspect in the games as the years went by. Micron Block is actually the first game by SNK from 1978 but there seems to be no dumps from it.
The graphics and the sounds are all basic with simply just a black background with white sprites. No music and space related sounds. It's like playing a more advanced version of Space Invaders with enemies that change up and such. Ironically, the game SNK made after Ozma Wars called Yosaku uses the same exact sound effects and actually plays like Space Invaders. I gave the depth and addictiveness a 5 and a 4 respectively as there is a set number of levels before the game loops around and if you are a patient fan of shmups then this might get a little addictive trying to get far because despite it's age, this game is tough as nails trying to get past just the first levels and having to deal with missiles that are hard to avoid and they sap a lot of energy. In fact, if you get clipped by an enemy projectile and another is close to it. The other projectile will nail you too. That's why it's important to destroy the enemy at the end of each level quickly because they spam projectiles like crazy and getting past them will get you to a docking station to refill your energy and then some. The controls can get frustrating as you have to carefully move your space fighter to respond to the controls.
The most irritating part that is a turnoff to the game is the gameplay itself. What I hate the most is when some enemies that come down will disappear and reappear thus making it hard to get at least one hit in and each time an enemy gets past your fighter, your energy levels will go down even faster. Another reason for having a hard time getting a hit is the enemy never stays still and you cannot even get another bullet off fast enough to recover because you are restricted to one shot on the screen at the same time while your enemy gets several.
I can't say whether or not you are going to enjoy this game but if you are the average SNK fan then you will enjoy playing a bit of nostalgia and you can also even buy this game from the PSN store as a Playstation Mini for three dollars and play it on your PSP too.
