This was a tough one to review. I already played the 32X version of Space Harrier and I reviewed it. I waited a little while and now here I am with the Master System version. Yes, Space Harrier was released on an 8 bit system like After Burner and Outrun. It was pretty impressive for it's time but when you look at it now it's not pretty. The scaling, something the game uses. Is horrific and you really don't know where the on level scenery is going to go. Let's look at this game in detail.

GAMEPLAY C+: I understand the Master Systems technical capabilities and how it would run a game like Space Harrier. So I'm not going to give this a big fat disgusting F. The game play still has problems. There is rapid fire but you have to wait a solid 2 seconds before the next bullet comes out. So you will end up tapping the buttons rapidly to get a bunch of bullets out. Pretty soon your fingers are going to ache.
Also the choppy scrolling makes it hard to tell were the on level obstacle is. So you might think that something over in one place and then you find out it's in another when it kills you.

STORY B: Pretty simple, it makes sense though. Most of these arcade games don't even need a story so this game its pretty good to have one You play as Harrier, a hero that saves planets all the time. He got a distress call from Fantasy Land saying that it was flooded with evil beasts, creatures, etc. So to save Fantasy Land Harrier must destroy these evil forces.

GRAPHICS B-: The graphics look like crap but you got to remember that this game was released on a Master System. So its not going to look as good as ever. The scaling is pretty bad by today standards but whats good about the Graphics is that there is no slow down in the game. I guess instead of having slow down the game has excessive break down of the outside of almost EVERY SINGLE SPRITE. The graphics might not look pretty, but while people insult the game it just does not seem like they remember that they are playing it on an 8 bit system.

SOUND A: The sound is incredible. The scaled down music sounds pretty good, and there's even 2 voice samples in the game. That's pretty advanced for an 8 bit system.

ADDICTIVENESS C-: The game is not nearly fun to play as some of the other Sega arcade games released on the Master System. It took me a while to actually enjoy which is a shame.

DEPTH A+: All 18 levels are packed in one 2 meg cartridge. All the boss stages are included as well. That was pretty impressive. Sega did it again with After Burner on the Master System except that the cartridge was 4 megs. Twice the size of this one.

DIFFICULTY REALLY DIFFICULT: Its nearly impossible for me to get frustrated on a video game. This did get me frustrated. Its even harder than Kid Icarus on the NES. You only have 2 lives and no opportunities to get continues. The only way I beat the game was with a continue cheat code that I found on IGN.com. So if your looking for a challenge play this game.
