Finished disc 1 of metal gear solid, though i can't figure out how to successfully load disc 2.
Whenever i extract disc 2, i get a .bin.ecm file. That doesnt seem to make sense because it has two suffixes. So, naturally i delete the .ecm off the end, yet just the .bin will not do the job either.
I've tried running disc to both from the end of disc 1 (when it tells me to change) and from scratch, however neither work.
Any suggestions?

the ecm file is a specially compressed file.

see the file metal gear solid disk 2.bin.ecm (or whatever its called)
follow these instructions.

what you need to do is use this tool:
http://www.neillcorlett.com/downloads/ecm100.zip
to decompress the ecm file. copy and paste the link or you wont get the file!

extract that tool to a folder.
drag the "metal gear solid disk 2.bin.ecm" file onto the "unecm.exe" executable and it will decompress into "metal gear solid disk 2.bin"

that new file will work in epsxe or whatever emulator you use.
you can delete the "metal gear solid disk 2.bin.ecm" file now, you dont need it anymore.
just put the new .bin file in the same folder with your other game files.

Nice, thanks a lot!

Worked so far; that is, i can get disk 2 running.

I still haven't figured out how to swap disks though. It doesn't give you a save point or anything after you beat the first disk, and swapping isn't working at all.

Anyone know how to fix that?

Yeah, what happens is (on disc 1) it says "METAL GEAR SOLID Insert Disc 2"

So, i press escape, go to change disc, select the .bin file for the second disc, epsxe pops up again, and it just sits on the "METAL GEAR SOLID Insert Disc 2" screen.
I read online that you apparently have to press start to get it running again? So i press start (in fact i've tried all the buttons) and nothing happens.
Refreshed frame rates dont help.

Since you can't save on the "insert disc 2" screen i savestate'd the thing on disc 2, reopened disc 2 from scratch and loaded the savestate. That didn't work either, same problem as before :/

At a loss on what to try next...

EDIT:
After a lot of searching and reading, i found it.

ePSXe v1.7.0's change disk feature is broken. This is a new problem, so the only way around it is to download an older version of ePSXe to swap disks, save the game on the new disk, quit, open up v1.7.0 and start playing again.

Allegedly ePSXe people have already fixed the problem and are implementing it into the v1.7.1 release.

EDIT 2:
Tested and it works
Just copied ePSXe 1.5.2 into my 1.7 folder and loaded up my disk 1 save state on 1.5.2. Walked to the stairs where it says "insert disk 2" and swapped from there. As soon as disk 2 loaded, i saved my state, and loaded it on 1.7
by copying 1.5.2 into the 1.7 folder let me bypass formatting and messing around with all my plugins and stuff again, which was nice
