A Beta is a Beta, Ziggy. No matter if it's a game, operating system, or a Rocket Shuttle.
Things are bound to go wrong.
Thats why Betas exist, to be tested and the errors found to be corrected.

Lol, Ziggy, I'd expect the exact opposite. Think about what you said before hand, games are less complicated than OS's. A game beta may actually run fairly smoothly like the Resistance 2 Beta did. While with an OS there's no possible way everything could of been tested before a beta. Beta OS is generally one of the buggiest things consumer's would get to test I would guess. A well designed game by the beta stage should be much more sound than an OS by the beta stage.

Well, i figure that a beta OS would be bugged (based on how things have obviously happened), but what i'm saying is that they shouldn't be so buggy. They should have taken care of some of that after the alpha testing

I'm gonna get a Windows 7 when I go to college. Let's hope they release it within the next million years T_T.

I've heard it's probably going to be quite a lot better than Vista. I'm going to avoid upgrading to Vista if I can, but I'll probably go up to Windows 7. I've never upgraded an OS before, so that will be interesting (this computer is my first, I've only had it for about a year).

Technically, you do not "Upgrade".
What you do is uninstall the original OS, which means all data is erased, including your Hard Drives, unless you back it up on a seperate Drive.

The only reason I would ever get Vista is if Xp only took up to 3 GB of RAM, fortunately any x64 system can go higher.

Well not technically, you can erase a OS without actually deleting everything, but as soon as you install a new one you have to wipe that particular partition.

Errm yes it does actually.

Like let's say you have a bowl of cereal, you can take away the milk, or maybe the cereals. But you wouldn't put in something else like soup until you have already cleaned it out completely.

well here's my food analogy...you have a bowl of cereal. you pour in on your computer where you just installed a new OS. it short circuits and explodes. the hard drive gets wiped

my point is, food an computers are different. Isn't the OS just supposed to make the computer operate? It shouldn't have any connection with the hard drive other than where it's installed

Thought upgrade kept certain folders you select.. Got a 400gb external HDD so never did any of that.

Vista/XP filesystems are the same, but differnt (as vash said). You wont find any ProgramData folders in XP, nor will you find 3 tpyes of appdata folders (if you know what i mean then cheers ).
Theres definalty some OS changes, thats why you get some software that runs on Vista, but not XP. (WinAPI is different).

When you update via windows updates, your doing minor tweeks and changes. Replacing an OS isnt as easy as replacing C:windows.

Also..

I had read that people who have brought vista after october ;ast year with a new computer, will get a free upgrade to win7. (month of october might be wrong, but it was some month..)

Yeah, I never got the point of that. Saving data in 3 areas? And the registry? Linux did that better honestly. :/

Not really, I used Ubuntu and it's pretty solid, I just don't like all the compatibility issues and the way you install stuff. I think you are thinking about Unix, but I could be wrong about that.

Windows 7 better be good, to make up for their farce called "Vista". If it comes out soon, I'm giving my dad this laptop and I'm gonna get a Windows 7. Might as well; Vista blocked my command to move an item to the desktop today, talk about paranoid.
