Author John Beiswenger voluntarily dismisses his lawsuit against Ubisoft. Beiswenger, suggested that Ubisoft stolen parts from his book “Link” in order to create that some of the storyline in Ubisofts well known franchise Assassin’s Creed. However, Ubisoft wasn’t the only company that was being sued, Gametrailers were also caught in this legal mess for publishing trailers of Assassin’s Creed. However, it has been released that Gametrailer has settled with Beiswenger out of court and as a result Beiswenger has dropped his lawsuit against Ubisoft, at least for now.
“Link,” was published in 2002 and is about a machine known as the “Link Device” which allows the user to witness different points of history through the eyes of those who had experienced it. “Link,” also has different plots that include assassinations, religious themes, as well as Historical Ancestors. It was these similarities with Assassin’s Creed that didn’t settle right with Beiswenger, however, a solution has been found.
While Beiswenger did drop his cast against Ubisoft, he still believes that Ubisoft did break copyright laws. Beiswenger, can bring the charges against Ubisoft back to court in the future if he wants. In a press release Kelly Clements Keller from Keller Law Firm stated:
“ My clients decision to exercise his right to voluntarily dismiss the action, without prejudice, in no way diminishes his stalwart conviction in merit in his claim against Ubisoft. He is unwavering in his belief that many key components of Assassin’s Creed video game infringed on many key components of his novel, “Link.” We believe that Ubisoft has engaged in egregious act of copyright infringement and, should he choose to seek redress through the courts in the future, we remain confident that a tier of fact will agree.”
