I dont think you can in rebirth or 386. If you want to catch a pokemon without killing it or wasting balls, just hit F2, throw the ball, if it gets out, F4. Rinse and repeat.

No not in the normal one but if you want snorlax and mewtwo it is possible to catch mewtwo in a regular pokeball and still have the master ball in hand
