Yeah, when I was a lot younger, I remember how my parents used to get gas for less than 95 cents per gallon. That was in a relatively slow Oklahoma town.

thenumberone :

Gas prices in the US are dirt cheap compared to Europe. But you wouldn't be able to tell if you lived here. The problem with the perspective over here is that we keep comparing our prices to those in the past. If we compared them to most other places, there would probably be a lot less complaining (that's not to say I don't miss the old prices, too).

Today while driving home from work I saw a few gas stations that were selling regular for 4.38 a gallon. Still way too expensive

Jordan, I guess then I'm pretty lucky still to have gas prices in the upper $3.00s.

What I really wonder is how much of that 4.00 is the actual tax and how many is the actual fuel cost.

Yeah we always have some of the highest gas prices in the country around here. Not really sure why either. I'm assuming a lot of it has to do with taxes.

I do know that in the city they say they use a higher grade fuel mix when it get's closer to summer to help cut down on smog days when it get's really hot. I don't think they start selling that gas until around Memorial Day though, may even be later.

Today I purchased gas for 4.36$ a gallon on my way to work.

Pro_Master : I live in Tennessee and am 18. I would just say my parents are 2.5 times my current age give or take a few years.

I was talking about 1994-1998 ish range.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_much_did_gas_cost_in_1994

States that the lower end around 1994 was $1.10, well there was this place where you could get gas for 95 cents all the way through '97 or so (This was not in Tennessee, but rather in that slow town in Oklahoma). I do not seem to remember the name... but nowadays I do not see any less than gas costing $3.60 per gallon.

Jordanv78 :

I'm curious, because I really don't have too much to go off. But how often do you have to fill your tank? I'm unlucky if I have to fill it up once a week. Usually I can get by for two weeks on $40 of gas (it's like $3.80 here). The only time I have to fill up more often than that is if I make the drive back home to visit my parents. But I only have to drive about 15 minutes to school or work every day. So I figure my gas consumption is much lower than most people.

soxfan849 : Well considering I don't live that far from the office I can usually get away with filling up my tank every 10 days or so. I try to not drive needlessly when the gas prices are this high. If I need to go into the city or something, I just take the train.

Jordanv78 :

Ah, so not too much different from me. And right now gas is just under $3.70 a gallon inside the city of Columbia. It's definitely not that bad.

Though I must say, I've never ridden in a train myself. How does the cost of a train ticket compare to the cost of buying enough gas to drive in and out of the city?

soxfan849 : The train is about 14 dollars round trip, but the advantages are you avoid the crazy traffic going into Chicago from the suburbs. Depending on how bad it is you could waste a lot of gas just in traffic. So the benefits are two fold.

Here in Silverdale, Washington, gas is running about 3.95 a gallon. But, when I was in Fort Riley, Kansas a few days ago, before I moved out here, gas was about 3.65 a gallon.

I guess Prices are high everywhere. Over here in Georgia, it's from like 3.65-6.00!! Talk about a price. I know that this is kind of random, but anybody know how to create coupons? If I could get gas coupons, then I would make some serious cash off of it.

At the time of this post in Chesterfield, Virginia, gas is about 3.25 a gallon. It was around 2.50 at first, then went up to 4 bucks, then it went down. Now its a roller coaster.

I'm looking at some of the prices and going "wow." It's only about $3.42 per gallon here. Thankfully; over the summer, I believe we spiked to a full $3.85 per gallon. I think.

I haven't had the need to drive for awhile, but I was kind of shocked when my husband and I went for a drive several days ago.  The price was $3.51!  Looking at the rest of these though, I guess ours really isn't all that bad.  LOL  I feel so blessed to live across from my job!
