Lazlo Falconi : while putting them in desolate areas does minimise risks to the environment itd effect the wildlife, and potentialy humans further up the chain.
Considering barrels of the stuff is being created storing and managing it all for the next few thousand years will get harder and harder, not to mention the cost, plants already cost a fortune to build and destroy, they dont last long either.

Nuclear power plants are already held to higher standards than other plants, and as such, must be strictly maintained for the duration of their use, and due to this they are often much more well built.
