Let the above image melt into your head for a while before you proceed. This game isn't POKEMON. Instead it is a rather suggestive name. COKEMON.

I started playing Cokemon sometime after I wrote yesterday's review on Pokemon: Team Rocket Edition. I expected a different hack in one of my favorite series. Instead, I got treated to the most mundane repetitive hack I've ever seen.

Graphics - 6

Let's start with the graphics... the best part of the game.

Yes. That is Clair from Pokemon 2nd gen if I do believe I am correct. You don't get the option to choose if you are a boy or girl of course, but I find it rather stupid they would stick you with a character that is quite obviously a girl. I mean, at least in the original games, you could easily pretend Red was an ambiguous non-genderal character, but with this... we don't get any other choice.

That aside, this is a very very normal hack. There aren't many graphical changes. I'll show the map later, under the story section, but it's generally uninspired as well.

Sound - 6

This was probably the least insulting thing about the game. At least the sound stayed unchanged. However, with a game as throughly lacking in wit, I half expected Yakketty Sax or some other stupid music to play at some point during the game. I was somewhat disappointed in that

I don't want to get redundant on sound, as with all pokemon games, the sound is generally the same as that others.

Addictiveness - 1

This is one of those games that are fun for all of 10 minutes before you grow up and decide it's not funny. This game is just insulting to both the player and the player's intelligence, and only those with the shortest attention spans will really enjoy playing this. The main problem is this game doesn't know the difference between on and off.

When you start the game there are a million references to coke and swears, but after you hit Vermillion City (Or as it's known in game, Cape Cod City), almost all of this is done, leading me to wonder if it's simply an unfinished hack. The game has no consistency, and can get increasingly annoying with every reference to Cokemon.

Story I'll get to next to last... but first I want to go to depth.

Depth - 5

The game isn't honestly that large.

The image above showcases pretty much the most learning curve this game has. A lot of the item names are changed, and it's just odd to give your pokemon crack of all things to heal them.

Another issue is the pokemon names.

I didn't give any of my pokemon nicknames. I never do. Those are the names programmed into the game.

Spearox=Spearow. That's REALLY uninspired. Leads me to believe the creator was going to do this with all the pokemon until he got bored.
Cokeran=Nidoran (female). Think of any prefix. Coke is in it's place. I kid you not.
Sparky=Charmander. It's not shown, but when Charmander evolved, it became Sparkair. The names are just so unrealistically uncreative, I'm led to believe a 10 year old made them up.

Difficulty - 1

Pokemon will never be hard. End of story. I don't care what you say.

Story - 3

This is the big one. The one that turned me off this game forever.

This is like the first thing we see in the entire game. The very. First. Thing. And his name isn't professor Oak. His name is Professor Ivy.

For those unfamiliar with the anime...

This is Professor Ivy.

More things like this follow including... and not limited to (there's a lot of bad things I refuse to post.)

And that's only some of the offensive things shown in this game. It's just so juvenile, I refuse to believe anyone but a little kid wrote it, thinking it would be funny.

It's not funny. It just shows how immature and childish the person is.

The entire story isn't improved upon until you reach Vermillion City... and by then the game isn't worth playing since it's basically Pokemon Blue with name changes on rare occasion.

Overall - 3.6

I think this is a generous score. Without the 6 in sound and graphics, this game gets really close to being below 2.

The whole game is just terrible except for the unedited parts... and what's the point of playing a hack if it's basically unedited? You play hacks for what they did to the game, not what they didn't do.

The creator didn't put a lot of care into the product and it shows, rather meekly.

Now to recap. The three best and worst things about this game.

Best
1. It's funny for 10 seconds.
2. The game wasn't completely edited (read- ruined)
3. It gave me a witty thing to snap back with at the very end.

Worst
1. It stops being funny after 10 seconds
2. It's appalling
3. Too mature for 90% of the audience.

Up until this point, I've been really really really generous and I've allowed kids to basically read it. However, on the honor system, I want all the kids reading this article to leave so I can give my final closing remarks.

Are you gone yet?

How about now?

Now?

I think my favorite part of this game is the end of this review. In which I will echo the words of my favorite character in the game, and tell the game, so ironically to...

After reading all that... I don't even feel inspired to try this game. It's not bad like Superman 64 where it was so bad that you wanted to play it. No, this game sounds so bad, it doesn't even seem like this review was worth it.

You know, this game reminds me of about 89% of the Internet today. I mean, just using vulgar or inappropriate language doesn't make you funny at all. I kind of wish people would realize that nowadays, but it seems like no one is ever going to get the message. This game is the epitome of those people...

I love the last picture, though. It seems like a nice way to sum up this review, no?

Someone70 :

That's my goal whenever I review a game. I don't want to pull punches. I want to be as honest about a game as possible so people don't waste their time playing games like these unless it's their type of game.

I also was debating whether or not to make the review because it IS so offensive.

However, I feel like people needed to know how bad it is, so if they played the game they know it's bad.

It's like Conker's Bad Fur Day in a way.

The difference is Conker's Bad Fur Day was actually fun.

Please tell me vulgar language and stupid drug jokes is the worst it gets. I mean, that game is so immature, I wouldn't be surprised if it had more.

epicpokenerd! :

I showed you in general how bad the game is.

There's a lot I just spacebar'd by since it was just that bad. The first 2-3 towns in the game are the worst.

Wow. I'm quite shocked about this. Is it in the RGR? If it is. Why not ask David to remove the game if it's what you're saying

Hello,

I realizing necroing threads on forums is usually frowned upon, but this thread is still open and I'd like to take a moment on commenting on this "review" of my "Pokemon Hack."

I don't find any review of Cokemon to be insulting or even too bothered by them. However, I do occasionally browse the internet and search for what people are saying about my ROM Hack after all these years.

For anyone who is curious, I'd like to correct some misconceptions about this person's review, because in my opinion I don't believe they were trying to be funny or inventive with their review, but rather serious. This makes everything they "reviewed" much worse because we're supposed to take everything they said at face value as if they're serious.

I'd like to make some corrections and commentary, if I may. If you find this necro extremely inappropriate (especially for my first post) I do apologize, but it's honestly the only topic I came here to respond to and discuss and didn't find a new thread would be appropriate. (Unless you find it is appropriate by some means, then a moderator can take action from there.)

To begin, some back story. This author of this review may not be aware, but Cokemon: Blue was one of the first ROM Hacks of Pokemon to exist. Most people are in agreement it's the "2nd known ROM Hack to exist of Pokemon" but I highly doubt that. For the past 20 years, I've received a large number of "fans" and ROM Hacking enthusiasts emailing me. Most of this was on an old Hotmail account which is lost, but I sometimes still get the occasional "fan mail" if you want to call it that.

Keep in mind, during the generation this hack was originally made... there were very close to NO hacking tools. (No map editors, no graphical editors.) Most of the game was changed using primitive HEX editors.

On to the comments on the review:

When Cokemon was first created, Pokemon Gold hadn't even officially came to America yet. The "Clair" character was unknown to me at the time. I thought it would be interesting to take the Japanese version of Pokemon Gold, and dig inside to see what sprites were used. I had found a "long haired figure" that seemed kind of cool to use. I copied the sprite from one game to another. I had no idea if the character was a boy, or a girl. All I thought was that the sprite looked cool, and added it. (Keep in mind your Rival has long hair too, and I had no idea if that was a boy or girl either.)

The author of the review also says we "Don't get any other choice" to switch characters. Again, ROM Hacking was in it's infancy and completely coding a "Gender Select" screen was unheard of unless you were some sort of Bill Gates level genius. (Again, rom hackers used simple HEX editors to do all their editing back then.)

This was probably the least insulting thing about the game. At least the sound stayed unchanged. However, with a game as thoroughly lacking in wit, I half expected Yakketty Sax or some other stupid music to play at some point during the game. I was somewhat disappointed in that

Again, this would have required a working knowledge of where the music data was stored at the time and manually changing each HEX code to compose a new symphony. Not possible back then.

Cokemon is indeed an unfinished hack. (Or at least was, there is a finished version on my PC which has gone unreleased. There's also a GBA version of LeafGreen that is almost complete as well.)

The image above showcases pretty much the most learning curve this game has. A lot of the item names are changed, and it's just odd to give your pokemon crack of all things to heal them.

That's the joke.gif

This is the big one. The one that turned me off this game forever.

This is like the first thing we see in the entire game. The very. First. Thing. And his name isn't professor Oak. His name is Professor Ivy.

For those unfamiliar with the anime...

This is Professor Ivy.  (image of professor ivy)

This is my biggest gripe with this dude's review and the reason why I came to the forum to even comment.

Are you not aware that this hack was originally started in 1998? Also, are you not aware, that Pokemon's official Professor Ivy didn't exist until a full year and a half later? I made the professor "Ivy" as a joke, as a pun of Professor Oak's name. Little did I know that "Professor Elm" was the name of the Professor in the Pokemon Gold / Silver series, nor did I even know that the Professors being named after trees was going to be a serious canon running joke of Pokemon.

This, my dear readers, makes my joke of "Professor Ivy" in my hack so amusing. I created a professor name that didn't even exist for another year or so, and incidentally predicted one. (As well as predicted a in-game running joke that wasn't established yet.)

And that's only some of the offensive things shown in this game. It's just so juvenile, I refuse to believe anyone but a little kid wrote it, thinking it would be funny.

It's not funny. It just shows how immature and childish the person is.

I was literally 13 when I created this thing. I literally was a child. I had no concept of what these drugs even were back then. Again, your review is a tad bit spot on, but if you had done your research, you'd realize that a child LITERALLY DID MAKE AN IMMATURE AND CHILDISH HACK.

Now, I know very little about this site. I read all the rules and passed the "Newbie test." I do also see there's a separate section for ROM Hacks and that this is a "family friendly" website. One user in this review suggested that Davideo7 "possibly remove the game" for being so un-family friendly.

My guess is that this hack ended up on here because, to my great dismay and confusion, Cokemon was been (somehow) heralded as one of the "best pokemon hacks of all time" -- Even though it's anything but. More accurate, Cokemon is more so described as "one of the most infamous and OG hacks of history." -- And that simply is all it is.

It's not good. It's not particularly funny or clever. It's not family friendly or appropriate. It is, however, probably one of the earliest ROM hacks available on the internet, and one of the most infamous and ONLY ROM hacks of Pokemon during it's time period. (The other, being it's sister hack, Bokemob, also created by a fellow hacker friend back in the day.)

I'd also like to state that the user who created this review seemed to slam me for "Putting him as a referral on this site" when in fact, he did not refer me. (I read this in another thread in which he has another username.) I apologize if this annoyed you somehow, especially if there's some super awesome referral system on here that you felt was being poisoned by my adding you as one. However, you technically DID refer me to this site by writing this review, and it's how I discovered it. Thus, you technically were a referral. Also, here I am, on the forums.

Again, I hope this post counts as something special and positive for this thread. If not, the moderators and administrators can do what they will with this thread and advise me privately on how to proceed on if I want to post again what I posted. (Or, alternatively, can tell me to shoo-off if you're un-fond of me.)

Either way, I've posted my peace and I'm happy to see a forum community that looks very "old school" and is gaming related that has a database of ROM Hacks and games. Has a very nostalgic feel, even though it seems like a lot of it's members are of a younger age than I'd like to admit exist. (Again, in 1998 when working on this hack I said I was 13, so, you do the math on that one.)

Take care!

Take care!

IceSage : Hey man. I don't know if I'm "supposed" to respond to you or not, but I'm going to anyway, because I'd like to comment on a few things, and I think I can provide some insight on a few of the questions you had. I also have some questions for you, if you don't mind me asking.

First off, don't worry about "necroing" the thread. It's not a huge deal here (anymore, at least) especially if you add as much interesting information to the discussion as you did. I can't speak for others, but personally I am glad you bumped this thread with that reply.

I had no idea Cokemon was so old, and I find it fascinating. As someone who also messed around with making Pokemon hacks when I was 13, I think it's pretty amazing that you were able to do what you did with the limited resources available at the time at such a young age. (Assuming you're telling the truth of course, and I have no reason to believe you aren't.) After reading the review I doubt Leggy knew this either when he wrote this. It seems like he assumed it was just another mediocre Pokemon hack, created along with the thousands of other mediocre Pokemon hacks.

As far as the family friendly thing goes, that rule was pretty heavily enforced in the past, due to the number of users between the ages of 9 and 13 that used to use this website. It's still part of Vizzed's culture today, but there is a little more wiggle room. I do not believe Cokemon was removed for being too inappropriate, I think it remained on the site until Nintendo demanded that all games that contain their intellectual property, including hacks and homebrew games, be removed from the Retro Game Room a few years back. As for how Cokemon ended up on here in the first place, I'm not entirely sure. Vizzed had an expansive collection of Pokemon hacks though, so it's likely any hack that could be found was added here.

I'm not sure why Leggy would have been upset that you listed him as a referral, since all that means for him is free CP, but if he did, I can understand why you might be annoyed by that.

I am a little curious about something. If you found Vizzed because of Leggy's review, then I assume you found it back in 2014, when you registered. If that's true, then why did you wait 4 and a half years before replying?

Anyway, I appreciate your input, I found it really interesting. I never knew Pokemon hacking was older than me lol.

For some reason when I signed up on a whim to reply to this post, it said I was under "Administrator Approval" or something similar. I lead a very busy life and didn't really think I had access to the forum until I did my bi-yearly "Let's search myself on the internet" boredom run on Google. Also, the fact that I saw a new thread about my putting the referral was kind of interesting, and I wondered if my account was approved or not, which it is. Not even sure if you ever even had an "approval system" in the past or not, I just know something was preventing me from properly logging in at the time. I had even forgotten about my quest to reply to this thread until my recent Google search brought up the thread about the referral thing. I hope that answers any questions on your curious mind, and thank you so much for this community being so polite thus far. I remember replying to a similar thread about me a long time ago on another forum and they were super strict and condescending to me, even when I had tried to follow their forum rules. Very refreshing to see reasonable mods and community members here! If you want to talk further, I'm in the community Discord. Just drop me a line if there's anything else you want to ask. I wouldn't want to clutter up this thread that was just meant for some silly review.
