Actually, I did only a little bit. I pretty much had which colleges I wanted to go to in my mind.

A little. Our entire senior class had preset appointments with the counselors about a week before graduation. I had pretty much made up my mind by that point, though.

Not at all. I went to the community college for two years because I got paid to go to school there because I was on theater, choir, and a few other scholarships. I decided to save up on money before going to a University. My fiancee and I are in school to be teachers (she graduated, so she WAS in school), and we picked the University that we picked because it is near the top rated teacher's colleges in the nation. It was an easy choice.

I did.

My school counselor helped me a ton. At first I didn't think I'd be able to go to college, but he helped me out, and took me on college visits in his own spare time.

He was so useful.

I was supposed to... but I didn't. I didn't feel like dealing with them and I just conveniently 'forgot' to tell my mom about it. We just had everything done through College Board, then went to them to get a transcript.

Not that I remember. Going to the local community college is very easy. Just fill out the paper work and get your transcripts.

So, I take the one near my house.

Out of technicality, yes. I had some help from a guidance counselor  about where to go, but me and my mom researched about colleges before hand and had a few choices of our own. I guess you can say they added a few more on to the roster of what colleges to send my grades to.

Gotta keep those options open after all.

I didn't. I actually didn't even know about things like that until I was already in college. If I had, things probably wouldn't have gone much differently for me. My school was chosen due to economic factors than any actual choice I made.

It seems a lot of people who have posted here did not use any kind of high school guidance counselor or consultant when picking colleges. I'm wondering if anyone who hasn't wishes they had. I personally did not because like I said in my previous post, the final college I entered was pretty much a no brainer. As far as the community college I attended my first two years was just to earn money for a bit. When you get enough in scholarships to make a profit going to college, you take it to build up for where you want to go

rcarter2 : I wish I had. It wouldn't have changed anything in the way that stuff happened, but what I mean is that I wish I had the opportunity to pick a school based on more than what I could afford, then I probably would have known about options like this, and had I known and been able to make the choice, I would have done so.

He was the best.

He took me on the visit TO the college on HIS OWN TIME and he even helped me get set up with Financial Aid. That guy was pure amazingness.

My high school didn't do a thing to help me. It helped other students, but honestly the politics in my hometown are corrupt; I have no connections, so I got no help in that regard even though students with worse grades got handouts. Metaphorical handouts, not pamphlet thingies.

I had a counselor to help me, but I really knew where I was going for quite a while. However, several of my friends did use the counselor to help them find where to go.

Personally I hated how our counselor worked, mostly for the fact that she never once mentioned the importance of choosing a major that's actually going to benefit us once we graduate. She instead put up that overused graph that compares the average yearly income of people who graduate from college and that of those who didn't go to college.

We had a careers adviser, they weren't that good as they did not really advise on what we should do for our futures, but then again I wouldn't call a careers adviser a proper job anyway.

I didn't.  To be honest, I went to five different high schools and none of the counselors ever helped me with much of anything. I thought all counselors were that way, but my co-worker at my job is very different than my own counselors were in high school.  My co- worker actually emails every single senior several times a day with college and scholarship information. It's really quite awesome and impressive.  I could never keep up with it like she does.

I didn't. I knew since I was in 10th grade what colleges I wanted to go too (I didn't end up going thou since my grades were too low and I couldn't afford the plane ticket.) Just make sure that you do your own research on the college (tours, nightovers, costs, etc) before talking to your consultant since if you have the information ahead of time you and the consultant can plan on plan for what you need to accomplish for the next whatever years till you graduate.
