Fasting: A time and place where you ignore food, water, and self satisfactions to lean closer to God.
Or for the more correct term: Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. An absolute fast is normally defined as abstinence from all food and liquid for a defined period, usually a single day (24 hours), or several days. Other fasts may be only partially restrictive, limiting particular foods or substance. The fast may also be intermittent in nature (see: Intermittent fasting). Fasting practices may preclude sexual and other activities as well as food. Christ said that His servants would fast. What is a fast? Is it starving yourself? Is it missing one meal—or more than one? Is fasting an obsolete Old Testament ritual—or an effective tool for Christian growth? Is it commanded for Christians today? You need God. How spiritually beneficial is fasting? What good comes from afflicting your body? Most people don’t see the need for God in their lives. Like King Nebuchadnezzar, they believe that they are responsible for their talents and abilities. They also credit themselves for everything they have or do (Dan. 4:30). Because they are proud and lifted up—vain—they do not understand that God gives them life and breath (Job 12:9-10). Your mind can deceive you into believing that you are doing fine, that you don’t need God, or that you are close to Him, when the opposite is in fact true. God sums this up in Jeremiah 17:9: “The heart [mind] is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” It is easy to fool yourself! FAST OFTEN: Read II Corinthians 11:27. The more you fast, the easier it will be. Your body will grow accustomed to it. In one sense, practice makes perfect. The more you fast, the more effective it will be. But keep in mind that attitude, not frequency, is what really counts. TAKE IT ONE DAY AT AT TIME: An effective fast should continue for at least 24 hours, causing you to miss at least three meals. Sometimes, however, a longer fast—2 or 3 days—may be necessary. If this is the case, don’t focus on the length of the fast—it will only make it seem longer. And use wisdom. Only fast beyond a three-day period if it follows sound professional advice. Your fast may start at any time, but it is more natural to go from sunset to sunset. Also, remember that fasting for a week does not necessarily make you more spiritual than someone who only fasted for one day. MAKE THE TIME: Fasting is rarely convenient. You must set aside the time to do it. At times, it may be necessary to perform your daily duties. You may have to work. But the most profitable fast would occur during free time. Occasionally, the Sabbath may be used as a fast day. But this is not ideal, because the Sabbath is a feast day. USE THE OTHER TOOLS WITH FASTING: Wasting the time you spend fasting—by not studying, praying or meditating—reduces the fast to a mere hunger strike. Remember to at least double the amount of prayer, Bible study and meditation normally done. Tripling them can be better. If fasting for a particular reason, be sure to review all scriptures that apply. PREPARE PROPERLY: A day or so before beginning your fast, cut back on the amount of food you eat. Gorging yourself before a fast is unwise. You may experience headaches, due to a lack of caffeine (especially if you are a heavy coffee or soda drinker). Cut back on these beverages ahead of time. You may also experience light-headedness and bad breath. Keep in mind that your body will be eliminating built-up poisons; drinking plenty of water before beginning will help. When you resume eating, start with light foods. Don’t eat heavily right away. HAVE THE PROPER APPEARANCE: Remember what Christ said in Matthew 6:16-18. Bathe or shower as you would normally do. Comb your hair. Dress and act normally. Brushing teeth is permissible. No one should be able to tell by your appearance that you are fasting—only God should know. Honestly, fasting has brought me closer to God and the "Food" he has givin me was through his word in the Bible. A good tip is to start slow, and start small. Start your fasting with not dealing with say your favorite snacks. Drink water instead of pepsi or Sodas, and then later you can move further like I do per month in lasing without days of food. The entire time you do this you need to be with God. No internet, no outside communitation, but with God alone and GOD alone. Lock your doors. Open your bible. And ask him to come into your eyes, body, mind, and spirit. Ask him while fasting to open your bible and let YOU see what God want's YOU to see. The first steps isn't easy. It's like going on a diet. You have to get used to what God's commandment is. But once you follow with practice: Like me, you can last days without food. However, the whole time you need to have your nose in that book and talk with God. Seriously, you talk with God right? But after reading all of this. Do you want to share fasting with your friends and family? NO! This is a deal between you and God. Selfishness is a sin, and it counts as one. Don't do it. I've actually never had the discipline for a 24 hour fast, since I've had my jaw broke in the past and it was wired shut for 45 days not allowing me to eat solid foods - causing me to lose 20 pounds, so it's pretty much a flash-back of that lol. But the most I'll do is about 12 hours, it is beneficial to your relationship with God in that it's dedicating that time completely (or more soundly if you're at work) to him, so it helps you to grow closer in your walk with him. |

I have fasted for a week straight. I was not sure how long I was going to go but on the seventh day I got really hungry and ate. I did not do it because of God though. ![]() ![]() |

A lot of people that fast are allowed raisins before sunrise and after sun down, i think i could if i wanted to.
Previously I've fasted for 3 days then gave in but tbh it wasn't because of religious reasons i don't think id ever have the disipline to do so over religion. Bitmap : Mormons have a different way of fasting: though we may choose to do more if we want to, we've been asked to fast once a month for AT LEAST two meals, starting when you are baptized. Now that I think about it I should probably do more than the minimum because it's too easy ( a few times I forget that I'm fasting and accidentally take a drink of water) and God wants self mastery... |

I think what is the most awesome thing in Christianity while compared to other religions is that it doesn't require you to fast, but if you want to, then it's beneficial spiritually, but not required. I like my faith in this regard because I know that Christ has already fulfilled for me what I cannot perfect. |
