I think that Final Fantasy 7 was the best in the series, well, as I've played anyways. But I loved how there weren't really dungeons and the story and action were pretty much seamless. I've started playing Final Fantasy 6 though. That is really good, too, but I voted for seven.

I hate to be sheepish, but Final Fantasy VII really is the best in the series, and it's one of two Final Fantasy games that I've actually been able to play to the end.

The game takes a very long time to get good, but when it does, it's fantastic. The story is one of the best that any game has to offer, the grinding has been toned down significantly from the previous games, and the boss battles are highly memorable.

The game has its fair share of issues, though, and it hasn't aged very well either (especially in the graphics department), so there are certainly some better RPGs out there.

I really had fun playing Final Fantasy X and X-2. Iunno, I just really liked the storylines. Unfortunately, I've never had the chance to play VII or IX, which seem to be a lot of peoples' favorites. =/ I hope I do someday though.

My personal favorite is FF9
. It was the first one I played, it didn't have a crap story like 8, and the graphics were amazing for a PlayStation game. It was and still is amazing.

I honestly like III the best, Japanese numbering. You have the freedom to choose how your party works, with more variety than I. This one has a lot of jobs that make different characters in more recent FF's who they are today, instead of just people with swords. My least favorite is 7. That's right fan boys, I said it. All the fan boys ruin it by making everyone tired of it with their constant bragging of work that's not theirs. I'm not saying its a bad game, just that I'm sick and tired of hearing of it 24/7.

Mine definitely had to be Final Fantasy VI (Played as III on the SNES when it first came out, and on the Advance)  I've beaten it 100 times and 20 different ways, and still thoroughly enjoying it to this day. 

The characters all have their own distinct personalities, weapon sets (mostly), and even their own demons to subdue, the plot is thoroughly enjoyable, and Kefka is just overall win as a villain.
