Don't hate me for saying this, but I thought 7 was the greatest out of those I have played (1, 4, 6, 7.) Although I haven't beaten any of them, I have gotten a feel for the gameplay in each of them and have had the most fun with VII. It also has GREAT character, dialogue, and the really innovative Materia system.

Final Fantasy 9 was my favourite! I loved all of the characters Freya, Vivi, Eiko and Garnet especially the boss fights were fun, they didn't make it to easy or too hard, the story line was awesome, the cut scenes were really cool and the Music was Phenomenal!

My favourite would be Final Fantasy 10 <3 I really like the love story between Tidus and Yuna and of all the battle systems so far the one from final fantasy 10 is my number one! ^^
Considering the new Final Fantasy's part 13-2 also gets a lot of points =D

But well... So far I only played 1+2, 3, 6, 7Crysis Core (not the original), and the everyone from 8 to 13-2 ^^
So maybe considering the other opinions my answer would be different if I play Final Fantasy 7 =)

In my opinion, I think that Final Fantasy 7 is the best FF game. I love the characters, soundtrack, storyline and the cut scenes, which are the best parts to the game I think!

VII, hands down, I still the t-shirt that came with the game, too many reasons to explain why I like this game. The polls seem to agree, how many other final Fantasy games got their own movie? and even a few games stemming from it's own story (Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus off the top of my head).

VI is a close second. A lot of people love it, and I can see why, it still holds up today as one of the best RPGs EVER (a bold statement, but I dare you to disagree!)

IX takes the bronze, only because 6 has a higher nostalgia-factor, some people didn't care for this one. I thought it was entertaining, the characters were fun and the graphics were pretty good too, very theatrical, and like most Final Fantasy games the music was incredible.

X slides in at #4. There are mixed feelings about this one. The leveling system was strange and it was the first Final Fantasy that wasn't open world (a trend that unfortunately proceeded to the present games). However, they story was interesting and the characters were unique, it also introduced the concept of controlling your Summons in battle. Even after finishing the game I went back and decided to play some blitz-ball, which turned out to be a blast with the right roster! (IMO, this is also THE LAST GOOD FINAL FANTASY that Square has put out).

Last, but certainly not least, is the Original Final Fantasy! (I would say on NES, but it has been re-mastered on PS1 so it is more aesthetically pleasing, and it comes with FF2 as well! the called it Final Fantasy Origins). Hard to believe that back in the day this was Sqare's last ditch effort to make it big in games. I think I speak for all of us when I say they hit the nail square on the head with this one. I don't think they had any idea just what kind of spark they ignited when this was released. Despite its flaws, the game overall was challenging and addicting, also one of few early Nintendo games where you could save your data (Legend of Zelda anyone?)

I had to chose VII. I love IX but my first rpg was FF VII. If it hadn't been for that game, I probably wouldn't have started using the money my parents gave me for my grades to start buying the other FF games in the series and other rpgs.

Final Fantasy VII is my favorite, I love the way it was played out, sometimes I was a little confused with the story though, but overall great game and great game play. A very close second would be IX.  I was very confused on how Vivi had kids though.

That is a tough choice. I have to chose between 5 and 7.  So I chose....
Final Fantasy Dissidia.  This game change FF forever.  If all future FF games had to way of battling.

I think FF!, the original is my favorite, not that its saying much since this list doesn't contain Dirge of Cerberus PS2 or Tactics PS one.   I haven't really played many of the others, and if I had played FF7 I'm sure I would be in love with it, it seems like a good game with a great story line from where Dirge of Cerberus comes from.   Just so many memories come from FF1 I just couldn't pick anything else.

Not too shocked about 7's land sliding everything else. Its probably my second or third favorite behind VI and (possibly) IX. Absolutely appalled that X is runner up, but hell one mans trash is another mans treasure, and its the general vote. Besides X isn't really a bad game. The 'sequel' to it sucks though. In my opinion of course.

From Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy X, I don't consider any other Final Fantasy from that point an actual Final Fantasy game... Personal opinion: Enix destroyed Square, but I think Square just wanted to experiment with MMO elements anyway, so it was inevitable...

Best of the best, Final Fantasy 7. It's really hard to decide between Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 8 and Final Fantasy 9... Depends on how strong my daily nostalgic emotion is But no doubt, Final Fantasy 7, first game I actually liked and played hardcore.

My favorite is definitely Final Fantasy IX. The diverse characters, the AMAZING soundtrack, and the perfect level of difficulty makes it my favorite Final Fantasy and one of my absolute favorite games of all time.
