I recycle when I don't have any other choice, but if I can reuse, I do.  Yes, some methods cause a bit of pollution, but the question is how much they are preventing in turn.  The burning of rubbish and dumping it into the sea can cause plenty of problems on their own.  Plastics can release toxic fumes when burned, and dumping them into the sea can kill the wildlife.  Landfills can break down biodegradable materials, but others will be there forever.  Shooting trash into space can get expensive, and at the end of the day you're burning a lot of fuel to get rid of things that were on our planet to begin with.  That's not exactly saving on environmental damage, but I'd need to have numbers in front of me to see which is worse.  Either way, we're sending things away that we'll just keep drawing out of the planet until it is gone.

When recycled, plastic is melted down, not burned, and processed into something usable again.  Some burning still occurs, but not nearly the same amount as if they had all been burned on purpose.  I've personally recycled standard paper on a small scale, which really isn't difficult, and the leftover water from the process was safe to run through the sewer system.  As a certified welder, I can also state that recycling metal is relatively easy.  There will always be some excess that can't be used, but even if you melt down two tons of unusable junk and only get a one-ton slab of something usable out of it, that's a ton you didn't really have before without recycling.

As for the other processes, I don't know enough about them to comment on them.  You should be able to melt glass like you can plastic or metal, and cardboard might be similar to standard paper, but glossy paper is one that some places take and others won't.  Regardless, though, I do agree with the point that companies use far too much packaging.  Some have to meet standards, while others are just doing it because they can.  The reason they push recycling is because so many people are too lazy to do the work and clean things up themselves for later use.  Reuse what you can, recycle if you can't.

In my opinion, I think it isn't a waste. People should recycle more often rather than letting things go unclean, at least that how I feel.

I try to recycle everything possible. As for keeping the environment clean. It may slow it down but it's not going to stop pollution at all.

It just annoys me when people waste things that's all.  I mean it's not really hard to put something in a different coloured bag is it....

It's just at this rate we will all end up living in giant rubbish tips....... *looks at his room* on second thought I think I may already be doing that...

Do you REALLY think recycling is a waste of time? If you REALLY think recycling is a waste of time, Then you are NOT helping the environment.

Of course not, recycling is very important, we re-use stuff we used, making good use of the environment that surround us, so there will be not much need to take things from the environment to be used for something in our daily life.

Yes, I do recycle. It is mostly based on convenience, but I am usually around a recycling bin, so if I know that, then yes, I take those few extra minutes to recycle whatever I need to. I know that certain types of recycling can harm the environment, so to help more than just recycling I often reuse. Usually this takes the form of writing on papers on which only one side has been printed on, keeping cardboard boxes for use in projects or moving things, and things of that nature. I firmly believe that if we don't take the initiative to stop the unnecessary creations of landfills everyday, then these decisions will hurt the environment and ourselves.

Waste of time? Definitely not. In today's world where everyday we waste resources by throwing them away, whether it be plastic cups, paper, metals, reusing these are to the benefit of us as a whole.

No, there is no way that recycling is a waste of time. It can help with a lot of ways. It can help the environment, and it can even be used to create other stuff.

I think Recycling is somewhat effective. I recycle the major things, but I don't recycle everything on a regular basis. I usually just throw it away and use or buy something else.

Sometimes I laugh about It because it feels like its hopeless and for some reason its funny to me I also like Robin Williams raccoon impersonation on recycling http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=BpVIkacLXEI#t=81s.  but I think overall we're doing a good job and we need to improve and continue in the future.

Oh, and heads up if you hit the video link because even though he does family movies his stand up comedy is not expect a lot of swearing.

I don't think that recycling is such a 'waste' of time. Recycling is one of the most important doings in the world. If humans recycle, the world would be such a better environment. Many humans living on the Earth don't bother to toss out the trash, recycle, or either throw the trash or recycle into the right trash/recycle bins. It isn't such a great thing when people don't reduce, reuse, and recycle. Good luck recycling and remember it is such a great doing to the environment.

Not really. I mean, it supposedly helps keep the planet clean, so I guess it serves a purpose. I really couldn't care less about it either way.

While only slowing down the waste process, recycling is helpful is reducing it. The reason it's not so efficient is because we haven't found a way to recycle EVERY type of material. And I'm sure what can be recycled gets lost among the other trash in landfills. Recycling is crucial to reduce trash, though.

Sometimes I think it's a waste of time, because I see people in other countries through TV dumping stuff into the land/ocean. Still, we live in Earth and Earth helps us live. Why don't we help Earth live too?

Recyling isn't a waste of time. But it is a tad hypocritical because you make recycled products in factories, so, yeah. It would be less of a waste if everyone contributed and decided to "go green" and save the planet. Nothing too extreme, (like tree hugging) but if everyone stopped for just a second and decided not to throw their trash out their car windows and on the side of the road. You know? Simple things. But, unfortunately, that is as likely to happen as for it to be freezing cold outside during the summer.

Absolutely not. I'm not the best example of a good recycler, but I do try to remember to put my litter into the correct bins, take canvas bags with me when going shopping, turn lights off when I'm not in the room etc., those kinds of little things. As for the industry, I may not be able to affect their decisions on how to deal with their waste, but I believe that as long as this planet is still habitable, we humans still have a chance to change our ways.

Dumping rubbish in the sea or sending it into space... I don't really think that would be a good idea. I think there's a very good chance it would backfire on us sooner or later.
