Hey people, I meant to do this a week ago, but I kept forgetting. Do any of you know good ways for me to stay up late and still not sleep in school?
It's not much of a problem other than me getting work done late in school, and I don't get caught due to my hand holding my head up. and please, DO NOT SUGGEST GOING TO SLEEP EARLIER/ON TIME. I tend to stay later because my friends are on more at night and it's more active to talk to friends then.
Any suggestions that aren't coffee or caffeine included will be great, and will be appreciated, cause this is becoming a problem.
Thank you for your help

well... you're not leaving us with many options then....

make sure you're getting balanced meals. Lots of vitamins, especially B and D I believe, will help you stay awake easier.

Although, your best option would be to go to bed earlier or get up later.... but apparently that is a bad suggestion.

Well you already covered my first two suggestions of going to bed a little earlier, and/or drinking some coffee in the morning. I would suggest making sure you eat enough food in the morning before school, because as we all know, breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and it really does help me personally with concentration and work habits. But why is it that you can't go to sleep earlier? I mean if your messing up your school work and sleeping in class by the urge to come here at all hours of the night, then maybe you should not stay up late on here, but instead spend your Vizzed time during the day instead of when you could be getting more rest.

Best Keep your concience as clean as you can, or charma will come with a blade in it's hand. It will strike all those who seek to gain without giving, and spare all of those who are weak and forgiving.

Eating a lot will help. A note though: not getting enough sleep will slow your metabolism down, so eating a lot AND not sleeping enough can make you gain a lot of weight.

Switch up your sleeping schedule. Start going to bed a little after you get home from school, then wake up around 11 or 12 pm. It's a bit extreme but you'll get all your sleep

As Zamiel said, it's possible to change your sleep habit. I've done it. I've had to work the swing-shift (from 3:30 PM to 12:30 AM) for a year. If it's a nocturnal cycle that you want then it just takes discipline, but it's manageable.

Training.

I myself have trained myself to stay up all night and not need the same amount of sleep most others do. A word of warning though. I look like I'm on drugs when I'm at school, because of "sleep deprivation". So if you want to do what I do, start off by finding your limit without being tired at school. Then push it ten more minutes each day. By the end of the month you should be able to stay up for as long as you want with only minor side effects.

Another word of warning. This CAN lead to insomnia (which I suffered from for about 2 or 3 weeks), so do at your own risk.

Mega I have a decent amount of exp. when it comes to surviving on little sleep, though when ur older (how old r u?) maybe try some caffiene. My best suggestion would be to try and get a couple hr nap in if u could.

This is extremely unhealthy. I'd know because I'm involuntarily in the same situation; I have a deviant form of insomnia where it it's extremely difficult for me to fall asleep, so I tend to get little sleep when I have to get up for classes. Sleep deprivation destroys your immune system, and your head is going to be pretty messed up. By that, I mean hallucinations and a slowed mental capacity.

Anyway, since you're deciding to do this to yourself, have you tried napping in the afternoon? That's not an option for people like, since I can't fall asleep in order to nap, but maybe that would work for you. If you slept for 3 hours after school and then three hours at night whenever you're done on Vizzed or what not, maybe that would suffice. It would probably take a few weeks to get used to, but you don't have to get all your sleep in one stretch. If you can break it up into a nap in the afternoon, maybe one in the evening, and one late at night, that might fix you being so tired since you'd actually be sleeping. I ask that you please just do not choose to merely not sleep; in the long run it will mess you up.

I don't know if switching up your sleeping routine is a good idea. If you sleep throughout the day, you will have what is called "no life". Also, don't you have a family that would want to see you?

Well, it’s not necessarily good to be a night owl if you can avoid it. I have been a night owl for years going back to when I was a kid and it’s not an easy thing to reverse. I do my work typically during the early morning hours (Midnight-4, 5AM etc.) but I never have a set schedule so I do know what it’s like to work exhausted.

This is how it was toward the end of my school run but I also wasn’t doing right by myself either so that was also a contributing factor. In your case unless you're working a part-time job or have circumstances that require you to sit up at night for what ever reason it’s not a good pattern. What I would do and often did when I had school and couldn't afford to take a day or two off was I would drink coffee to wake myself up after maybe at most two hours sleep if that.

As I said it definitely isn’t a good pattern and it certainly isn’t healthy. From my own experiences as I said I am use to working all-nighters on a frequent basis and being a writer that is the best way I’ve found to do my job. It has taken a toll on me however because up until a few years ago I would go constantly because I had responsibilities including but not limited to running a majority of the content for a sports website for the sport in my field. This was an all day pretty much 24/7 type of scenario and I was doing this while taking classes in an attempt to obtain a GED.

There were days I would work where I could not see straight and was legitimately not feeling good due in most part to not getting adequate sleep. I have a strong work ethic so I worked on the philosophy that sleep is for the weak and, I would basically run on empty if I needed to in order to do my job. In addition to my responsibilities working for this website I also worked for a magazine overseas and was doing my responsibilities for them simultaneously which due to time differences was not easy at times but I am the type that thrives on obstacles like that.

I also use to do frequent radio appearances as a guest analyst so on days where I would do appearances I would incorporate that into my routine so what ever little rest I could have gotten on those days I foolishly tried to forgo. After years of doing this type of schedule it eventually took a heavy toll on me and I ended up getting sick with High Blood Pressure. In addition to not getting nearly the amount of rest that I needed, because I was working constantly I did not eat properly (A problem I still deal with from time to time) and the bottom line is that if you go like that for a significant period of time sooner or later it will catch up to you no matter how young you may be. I am close to my 27th birthday so this was almost six years ago that I experienced these health problems. The problems I experienced were severe to the point where I could not work and had to take medication which to be perfectly frank with you, did a number on me.

Although I am no longer considered to have High Blood Pressure I still deal with the repercussions of being on the medication I was on for that period of time. It definitely made me much more self-aware of how much I could put myself through physically. As I said I still do pull all-nighters frequently as it is part of my job but I now know when I need to rest and I don’t push myself beyond my limit.

For example, last night I covered two fight cards. One was a webcast that started around 9PM the other was a card that aired on television but I chose to view a west coast feed which aired around 2am. I knew I was in for a long night so I slept for six hours in the afternoon in order to make sure that I was well rested. I also ate dinner during the early card to make sure that I avoided eating at an odd hour.

After I was done I went to sleep almost immediately because I have more work to do today and made sure I slept at least six-seven hours. Before I got sick I would try to work through it with no sleep trying to stay ahead of myself work wise. In addition, now of days I do a much better job of planning out my schedule. If I know that I will be busy later in the week I take it easy and give myself a day or two off early in the week to make sure I don’t burn myself out. I also take time off during the holidays which is something I never did in the past.

I’m sorry if it seemed like I was going on and on but I felt this might give you a little perspective… If you can make an adjustment in your hours that would make it easier on yourself my advice would be to do it. Since you’re in school it is very important to make sure that you do everything you can to be the best you can be to succeed in school. As someone who did not finish school I know how difficult it is to succeed without a diploma and although there were other things that contributed to why I left school in addition to the hours I kept, I do not recommend someone taking a similar path as I did and encourage others to make it easier on themselves if they can. I also am an Uncle of six all of whom are in school so it is very important to me to see them succeed.

I also know what it’s like to have friends and the one thing I’ve learned is that if friends are true friends they will be there regardless of what hours you keep. It isn’t good to set your priorities around what other people do even your closest friends. I have friends that I consider like family and the best way I keep in touch with them is either by e-mail if I don’t see them online or, by simply picking up the telephone and calling them.

These friends have stood by me through a lot of stuff so am very loyal to them but what is most important to me was that it was these friends that were honest with me that I was not doing right by myself and showed legitimate concern for my well being while I was sick and told me take care of myself first before I worry about anything else.

Acquaintances come and go but real friends are truly hard to come by.

I hope that I have helped you the best I could. My advice is to make an adjustment in order to make things easier on you. I know that what I am saying may not be popular, I was young once too but, it isn’t worth running into problems later on if you can avoid it whether those problems be school related or god forbid health related. The bottom line is that no matter how you may look at something, sometimes the truth is unavoidable and, unfortunately sometimes the truth hurts.

Best of luck to you.

MegaRevolution1 :
I’ve been in that position before of having people complain about my hours. I had a girlfriend that didn’t believe me when I told her my schedule and thought that I was exaggerating about how much I work and the amount of hours. She even told me at one point that if I was going to lie to her to try and come up with something more believable.

Then, she came to live with me for a while and she saw first hand how grueling my schedule was because I was doing my writing and I was working a regular job at the time on top of it so after a few weeks I never heard another negative word about it. It is much easier for someone to complain about what someone else does with their schedule but, it is much harder for that person to attempt to put in that kind of time and effort in.

In your case it sounds like your parents might be trying to motivate you.
