Now, for the other reason I favor Azelf:
battling.
Looking at their movesets, Azelf learns fire moves, Uxie grass, and Mesprit Ice. Not only is fire the handiest of those three (especially for me... I really lack in good fire types), but it also has the best TMs (Flamethrower is better than Ice Beam, and Energy Ball is impossible to get... Fire Blast and Blizzard are the same disregarding typing, but Solar Beam sucks). On top of that, Azelf has some better moves, and certainly the best stats of the three (given the movesets... yeah...).

Since I've never actually battled with these I'm just going off looks and what I've read.
Mesprit:
"It's attacks are more offensive oriented"
"Mesprit is the mean looking one with a pink head"
Now that's my kind of pokemon

Also, if bigNate is right and Mesprit learns Ice, then even better. I find grass useless, I have too many fire pokemon so then ice is the clear winner for me.
