I completely agree. I'm very selective with every site that has a Friends List option. On Facebook, I only add people who I have met in person and got along with. Facebook has a ton of personal info, so there's no need to add everyone in the world. Besides that, people lie about a lot of stuff including their name and age sometimes. A friend of mine left a comment on one of my statuses a while ago. My status was about me being annoyed by random people friending me. He said that this is...
"The internet. Where men are men, women are men, and children are federal agents."
I agree with him.
On YouTube and Vizzed, I only add them if I have communicated with them multiple times. I hate it when someone I don't know tries to friend me on YouTube. If I don't recognize them, I ignore it. If I do recognize them and we have talked online before, then I consider adding them.
I also will only add people who are 18 and older just to be on the safe side. Besides the whole federal agent thing, what could I really gain from communicating with someone who isn't around my age? I'm 20 by the way. They're concerned with their little high school problems, while I'm worried about getting through college and getting a job. I will comment on threads, but there's no need to add me.
I've only added 3 friends on Vizzed (one has left, but there's a gap where his Username used to be). I haven't added many on YouTube because I'm so selective. Someone else on Vizzed added me. I don't have anything personal against them, but I prefer to be able to pick out the people on my friends list.
You're also right about offending people. I wouldn't know what to say to get someone to unfriend me. "Sorry I don't know you. Let's not be friends." It's just kind of awkward. I read David's comment about blocking chat, but wouldn't it be easier if I could just not have random friends in the first place? I wish this thread was a bit more active so it would get more attention.
