If I remember correctly Mario was actually named after the landlord of one of the staff memebers at Nintendo.

Here's something stupid about Mario Bros. I put a poll on a website a few years back asking: "What is luigi's last name? Mario or Luigi" I knew the answer was Mario of course, but about 90% of the votes were luigi... I mean how can they be brothers if their names are different?
