My best friend has 2 younger autistic brothers, and I find it not even a problem. I think it's a charm. I have a crush on one of them right now =P 

I work for a mental health center for kids, so I have seen many kids with autism. I have seen autism at different severity and different conditions. The first case I saw was more on the aspergers syndrome side of it. He was a genius, but he had no social skills. He didn't really understand how his behaviors were perceived by his peers, so he often said inappropriate things or often annoyed people. It took me a while, but he became a pretty good friend of mine. I never worked with one like him at the mental health center. The two most memorable I worked with were on the severe side. One of them had problems empathizing with others so he never really expressed feelings or emotion to anyone. The only thing he I ever saw him have affection for was his cat. Though, when he had to board his cat for a few days at the vet, he was almost shut out from the world around him. The other one I work with has almost no ways of communication. He doesn't look people in the eye, I have only heard him talk on a few occasions (which was to himself), and he HAS to have his NDS in his hands at all times. If he has that out of his hands for more than a couple minutes, he goes into a fit of violent rage and screaming (in case anyone thinks this, I am NOT copying that episode of House, but it was very similar). Working in the mental health center to get myself through college has helped me develop a good perception with the kids in there. They are like us in a lot of ways, but just can't express it the same way. I agree that it is horrible when people insult, ridicule, or make fun of them. It is sad that we live in a society that has such intolerance and misunderstandings.

1gnika : Yeah. Middle school is the worst time ever. That is when kids who are friends with everyone really start to split up and try to establish who they are and who they hang out with. Kids are so cruel in middle school. I could not imagine being a target like you probably were. But from your post, it sounds like you are doing much better in that department. Good luck in what you do from here.

My brother is autistic too, and whoever thinks austism is a joke, they have no heart, autistic people are smart and they are in a special place in our hearts, i sound sappy but its the truth

in the school im at now theres a special like unit where people with mental illnesses get to visit the school and become part of a buddy scheme where a person volunteers to look after them and take them out on trips and help look after them after school and become buddies with them obviously with supervision. I als ohave a friend who has a brother who is autistic but its so bad he cant learn to speak properly, even though i have no realtives with autism or anything i still respect people with autism or asperges alot for what they go through it must be really tough and we cant even begin to imagine what goes on in their heads

If someone has autism, it doesn't mean that they're different. I mean, I know a girl with autism, and I can say that if anyone thinks people with autism are stupid, then they don't have a conscience and they're wrong. Autism doesn't mean that you're dumber than everybody else, it just means you have a different way of looking at things, which really keeps life lively and is a good thing if you think about it.
