I think horror is back. Not that it necessarily went anyway, but I find that most horror movies previously were a bit campy, and mostly catered to people who loved horror for the sake of horror (which isn't me).

But have you noticed in the past couple years the amount of "good" horror movies? They now have beautiful cinematography and music, artistic direction, impressive sets, complex screenplays, and award-worthy acting. Here are some horror movies that I've seen that have come out the past two years:
  • Sinners (which is likely going to be nominated for a million oscars)
  • Weapons
  • 28 Years Later (which is a beautiful piece of art, IMO)
  • 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
  • Frankenstein (gorgeous sets, costumes, and colour).
  • The Substance (great screenplay with top acting)
  • Nosferatu (beautiful cinematography and impressive acting)
  • Longlegs (Slightly overrated, IMO, but still impressive)

And that's only the past two years. It's not my favorite genre, usually, but lately, it's delivered some great cinema.

Any more you would add to the list?

I haven't been a major horror movie fanatic, but I might have to take a look at some of these. I guess as Hollywood budgets and spectacle continued to improve, eventually the horror movie genre would follow suit. It's interesting, because horror movies are most often known for the cheap B-movies that cost way less than most other genres to make while still delivering a decent experience for fans of the genre. (I think that would include stuff like Insidious?)

I'm not a huge moviegoer, so sadly I can't add too much. The only one I can think of that would be a worthy addition to the list might technically be "The Menu", except I don't think it's a horror movie. It feels a lot like one, but I don't think it is by technicality.
