Super Mario World for SNES came out around 1990/1991. This launched the SNES into one of most successful gaming systems, though it has been passed by other gaming systems. In addition, Super Mario World introduced us to new enemies. One of the new enemies introduced in Super Mario World was Rex. It seemed like this would be Rex's only appearance. However Rex has appeared in other Mario games.

Rex is a dragon dinosaur like creature that lives on Dinosaur Island. When Bowser took over this part of the Mushroom Kingdom and later kidnapped Peach, Rex became one of Bowser's Minions. It is confusing if they had always worked for Bowser or if they joined his minions after he took over. It is hinted that Rex's may have lived peacefully on Dinosaur Island with the Yoshis until Bowser Came. In one booklet in another game it stated "this dragon like enemy used to live peacefully in Dinosaur Island inhabited by Yoshis until Bowser came". On the other hand, another booklet stated "This dragon like enemy works for Bowser". Regardless since Super Mario World and onward they have been part of Bowser's Minions.

In Super Mario World, they mainly patrol the levels walking or walking back in forth. Therefore, they are similar to the Goombas. In later games they still serve in patrols for Bowser but they are more aggressive and they have more attacks. IT is not known if they learned these new attacks or if Bowser gave them that ability.

It should be noted that after Bowser is defeated from Dinosaur Land, Rex is not seen in Dinosaur land again in future games, but they appear outside of Dinosaur land. Thus, it has been speculated they where either expelled from Dinosaur Land or the left due to being part of Bowsers troops.

Appearances- In all the games they have appeared in they have either been blue or purple. They have orange stubs on their back and tail. They also appear to have an orange belly. Moreover, they usually are shown with two large fangs. In later games it is revealed they have small wings, but cannot fly. It is also revealed that they have claws at the end of their fingers.

Personality- Not much is known about their personality. They hardly ever speak. In future games they where hostile toward Mario and Luigi, but its hard to tell if this was real hostility or if they have it due to serving Bowser. They are very loyal to Bowser and serve him.

If they did join Bowser after he came to Dinosaur Land this would suggest they may look up to characters who have power or wealthy. If the other booklet is correct that they have always been part of Bowser's troops they could be looking for adventure.

Abilities- In their firs appearance they could take two hits or two fireball hits before being defeated. If they where jumped on they would shrink half their height and increase their speed. In later games they would just try to run over Mario and his friends. In their last few appearances they where shown to have the ability to breath fire. It is not unclear if they learned this or if Bowser game them that ability.

Attacks- In their first game they mainly just tried to walk into Mario, Luigi and Yoshi. Sometimes they would appear in numbers. Other than that they had no real special attack. In future games they gained the ability to spit fireballs at their opponents. There where also shown to be able to jump a little bit.

Weaknesses- In the first game Mario or Luigi could defeat them with a spin jump, two head stomps, or two fireballs. Yoshii could also eat them. Thus they where easy enemies to take out similar to a Goomba. In later games they became more durable to fireballs and took more hits to defeat. However, Yoshi was still able to eat them.

Relationships Allies-

Bowser- Rather they had always been a member of or joined Bowser's army, they have always been loyal to him. They are also loyal to Bowser Son Bowser Jr, and the Koopalings who are Bowser niece and Nephews.

Koopa Troos- they are sometimes seen patrolling areas with Koopa Troopas.

Other enemeis- sometimes they will team up with other enemies.

Enemies-

Yoshi-As I stated it is hinted at one time that they may have lived peacefully with Yoshis. However, since they joined Bowser the no longer get along with Yoshis. In fact they fear Yoshis because Yoshis can eat them.

Mario and Luigi- They do not like the brothers due to him foiling Bowser.

Overall, Rexes serve as the Goombas in their first appearance. In their first game they mainly just tried to walk into Mario, Luigi or Yoshi. Even though they can appear in numbers they are easy to defeat. If hit they are reduced in size by half. They can also be eaten. Thus, they are the grunts in Super Mario World. However, in later games they become stronger and more durable. In later games they can take multiple hits to take out and can breath fire.

As stated they are dragon dinosaur like creatures. It is speculated that them and the Yoshi's may have had a common ancestor. However, Rex and Yoshi do not get along with the later being the dominant and stronger species. At one time they might have leaved with Yoshiis peacefully, but that is confusing due to different booklets saying different things. Also, like I stated, due to different booklets, its not clear if they joined Bowser when he took over Dinosaur land or if they had always been a part of his troops. If they have always been part of Bowsers troops they could have been living on the island outside of duty. If they did join Bowser that could explain while their is hostility between them and Yoshiis.

In conclusion, Rex are dragon like enemies that first appeared in Super Mario World. They later have appeared in other games as well. Their background is very mysterious and conflicting. This concludes the Rex Biography.
