Wart is an enemy in the Mario Brothers Series. While he is mostly known in Canada, USA, and Europe as well as other countries as a Mario villain. He did not start off as a Mario Villain. In fact, he was originally from a different game. Today we are going to learn about him.


Wart made his debut in Doki Doki Panic. A Japanese game for the Nintendo. In that game he kidnaps two of the family's youngest children. The rest of the family members jump into the Subcon world and rescue the children and liberate Subcon from Warts dictatorship.

The original sequel to Mario Brothers was going to be Mario Brothers the lost levels. However, this game was infamous for its difficulty. Nintendo realized the game might be too difficult. So they took Doki Doki Panic and converted it into Super Mario Brothers 2. They even changed the story line.

In Super Mario Brothers 2 Wart has taken over Subcon and created monsters with the dream machine. Mario has a dream that a world needs to be liberated. He discusses it with his brother Luigi, girlfriend Peach, and friend Toad. To their shock they discover the door that Mario saw in his dream. They enter Subcon. They slowly made their way to the world and learned that Wart is allergic to vegetables.

One By One the 4 heroes defeat Wart's army of minions. They eventually confront the tyrant himself. Wart is defeated and Subcon freed. As Wart has passed out from the veggies. The Subcon residents beat him up for taking over their peaceful world and messing up their dreams. However, at the end of the game it shows Wart laughing implying that he survived and he could return one day.

It should be noted that some of Wart's Minions became member of Bowser's Army. Shy Guys, Sniff Its, Phantom Masks, and Bomb-Ombs have become staples in Bowser's army. This has lead to some speculation that Wart might be related to Bowser somehow, though Nintendo has not confirmed this. Another character in Wart's army Birdo became a good guy and would go on to become an ally to Mario and his friends.

Appearance- Wart is a large green toad with warts on his back, which is how he got his name. He is also very stocky. In addition, he wears a golden crown on his head. His cape appears to be blue and he wears a thick golden chain. He also has sharp claws.

Personality- He is described as a master of mischief as he created monsters with the dream machine. The way he took over Subcon and installed himself as dictator means he has a tyrant personality. When he takes over a world he seems to rule it with an iron fist. He is also very confident and believes that he cannot be defeated so easily. In his original game he was also shown to be every evil as he was going to hold two of the family's children possibly for ransom. In a way he is similar to Bowser.

Given how after he is defeated and overthrown he is seen laughing. His laugh could be that he survived and he could return some day. It is also speculated that his laugh may suggest he is insane. Both are likely. He appears to not have cared that he created monsters to terrorize people's dreams and he used the monsters to install himself as dictator.

Moreover, he appears to be very bold and has an ego. This is shown when he is encountered he states I am the Great Wart and laughs once again. He is shown to reveal himself as Wart the Great or the Great Wart.

Abilities- Wart has the ability to use magic and rig machines. He used the machine to create some of his minions. However, it is also implied he created them with Magic. Regardless, Wart is intelligent to know how to use machines. He also has a military mind the way he conquered Subcon. He can blow toxic bubbles from his mouth. It is also shown he can throw powerful punches. His claws suggest he could use them in battle or to dig.

Attacks- Wart's main attack is to blow toxic bubbles at the players. He will move back and forth blowing a string of Bubbles. If a player has a veggie and it hits one of his bubbles it will vaporize it. In other appearances mainly in Nintendo Comics it is shown he can use his size to his advantage. It is also shown he can throw dangerous and powerful punches. In another comic it shows he can create shock waves by jumping up and down thus stunning opponents.

Weaknesses- Wart has an allergy to veggies. If he is hit with a Veggie he will say Ribbit or Arrggh depending on the game. Once he is hit with enough veggies he will turn pale and pass out. Him being weak to veggies is most likely due to the fact that most frogs/toads are carnivores and do not eat veggies. Regardless, Veggies make him very sick.

Now, it has been speculated by some that Wart could be related or connected to Bowser in some way. Some people have pointed out that a lot of Wart's minions became Bowser's minions. In a promo poster it showed Bowser shaking Wart's hand. In another Promo it shows Bowser stating how Wart is his cousin. However, these where just prompt posters and not considered cannon by Nintendo. When asked about it one of Nintendo's officials stated "that is interesting and an interesting theory". Nintendo has not confirmed the two are related, but there are a lot of interesting theories out there. The two are similar though. Both rule their worlds with an iron fist, both are very strong physically, and both are green. Even though, Bowser is based off of turtles and Wart is based off of a toad.

Overall, Wart is a character that appeared in an Non Mario Game but was converted into a Mario Villain. In other games he has made cameo appearances. It is also shown that Wart has a son called Wart Jr that is orange and green. He is a mischief and evil ruler. He rules Subcon, until he is overthrown, like a tyrant dictator type person would. He seems to enjoy the havoc he causes and has no remorse for his actions. Even after being overthrown he laughs at it.

I have always found Wart to be interesting. I think one reason I found him interesting was because originally as I have stated he was not a Mario Villain at first. Yet he was turned into one. I'm kind of glad he became a Mario Villain as he offered something different. Not that there is anything wrong with Bowser as Bowser is one of my favorite Villains.

Overall, Wart is a Mario Villain that is similar to Bowser in so many ways. This concludes the Wart or as he says in the video games the Great Wart's Biography.
