Today I'm going to do a biography of Birdo. Birdo has since become a regular character in the Mario Franchise. However, Birdo did cause some controversy when she first debuted as a character. I will explain why she became a controversial character in just a bit. After the controversy was resolved she has since gone on to be a popular character in the Mario Franchise.

Birdo made her first debut in the game Doki Dok Panic which was only released in Japan. Super Mario Brothers the Lost Levels was supposed to be Super Mario Brothers 2. However, when Nintendo realized how difficult the game was. They took Doki Dok Panic and switched the characters into Mario Characters. Some of the enemies in Doki Dok Panic became staples in the Mario Franchise.

Birdo was one of the characters that was carried over into Super Mario Bros 2. In the states Birdo started a controversy. In the Super Mario Bros 2 Booklet it stated that Birdo is a boy who thinks he is a girl. At that time in the late 1980's that created a controversy. That statement in the booklet was due to a translation error. In Japan it is not uncommon for Japanese video game characters to be gender neutral. Realizing they could have a huge controversy on their hands. Nintendo quickly pointed out it was due to an error that Birdo was indeed a female. As a result the Birdo in Japan was identified as being female. However, Nintendo stated like the Yoshii's there are both male and female Birdos, but the main character is female.

The controversy subsided and Nintendo avoided what could have been a major public outrage at that time. In the USA and Europe there is no mentions of Birdo's past controversy. In the Super Mario Bros All stars and remakes of Super Mario Bros 2 it mentions Birdo is a girl. However, in Japan the controversy has become short of a Joke.

She made her debut as a Mario Character in Super Mario Bros 2 serving Wart in Subcon. There she would serve as a mini-boss the player would have to defeat to advance. Thus, she was at first an enemy. However, after Super Mario Bros 2 she has appeared as a friendly character and ally to Mario and his friends.

The character has appeared in puzzles offering hints to the player on how to advance. She has also appeared in sports games, Mario Kart Games, and other games. In quite a few games she states that she loves hanging out and playing with Mario and his friends. Likewise, Peach, Daisy, and the others consider Birdo a friend and enjoy her company. As stated she has helped the heroes defeat Bowser or some other type of threat.

In time she has become one of the more popular video game characters. She even seems to be aware of this as in Mario Party games she states I'm finally a star by the powers that be (being Nintendo).

Appearance- Birdo is a dinosaur similar to a Yoshii. She is shorter than the main Yoshii character. She is generally described as being pink or hot pink in color. She has red spines on her back similar to some Yoshii's. She is revealed to have a long tail. Her main characteristic is her large red bow that she wears on top of her head. Furthermore, she wears purple make up on her cheeks this makes her cheeks appear to be purple.

Personality- After becoming a good character. Birdo has lots of traits. She loves to have fun such as racing, playing games with her friends, and singing. She can sometimes be vain at times by telling the other characters how beautiful she is and did they notice it. However, she loves to help Mario and his friends. It is shown that she cares for them and does not like to see them in danger. One character she really likes and tries to protect is Yoshii. Likewise Yoshii tries to protect her as well.

When she wins a game or a race she likes to point it out as she is very confident in her abilities. When she looses she throws a mini tantrum but then usually laughs it off. Despite her fun loving side. She can have a temper at times. She looses her temper when her friends have been wronged, in danger or when she has been tricked. She is slow to anger but when her temper comes out it is time to get out of her way.


Abilities- It is revealed she is a good singer and she likes to sing. However, she has some powerful attacks. Her main attack is to shoot eggs at her opponents. Again, similar to how Yoshii' throws eggs at his opponents. She can also use her tail in battle. In some games she can even shoot fireballs. When she gets mad she has the ability to get stronger especially when she punches or uppercuts somebody. In addition, she is shown to be very athletic as she is good at tennis, golf, Olympic games, and baseball. Likewise, she is also a good racer and drives a sports car as her main racing car.

Moves- As stated Birdo has some powerful moves. She can spit eggs at her opponents and in some versions she can spit fireballs out. However, her most powerful move is her super punch or uppercut. When she had been tricked by a bad guy she turned enraged. She hit him with her uppercut sending him flying out of the castle thus defeating him. Mario and Luigi where glad she did that as they were about to engage the bad guy in battle, but they where in disbelieve that Birdo had that type of power.

Relationships- These are the characters she is good friends with.

Yoshii- Currently Birdo and Yoshii are a couple. Yoshii becomes enraged when he thinks Birdo is in trouble or in danger. Likewise Birdo becomes enraged when she thinks Yoshii is in trouble. The two care for each other very much. They are very affectionate toward each other in a passionate way. The two will team up with each other by default. Birdo will be Yoshii's racing partner and sports partner by default. Likewise Yoshii will be her partner by default. As of 2023 Nintendo has confirmed that Yoshii and Birdo are indeed girlfriend and boyfriend.

Mario- At first she attacked him in her debut. After that she is friendly with him. She even helps him in his quests. She loves playing with him and Peach in games.

Luigi- Just like Mario she attacked him in Super Mario Bros Two. But since then has become an ally to Luigi and she has helped him on quests as well.

Peach- Birdo considers peach a good friend. She highly respects Peach. In one game she tried to impersonate Peach so the real Peach could escape. It did not work though, but Peach was grateful that she tried.

Daisy- She is shown to be on good terms with Daisy as well.

Toad- She helped Toad in his puzzle game against Wario in Wario Woods.

Neutral Characters

Wario- She helped the players against Wario in Wario woods. However, after that she does not really hate him nor like him. In one game it shows their chemistry is neutral.

Waluigi- Same as Warior not really friends but not an enemy either.

Enemies- These are characters she is enemies with.

Bowser- Unlike Shy Guys, Sniff Its and Bomb-Ombs who became members of Bowser's minions. Birdo did not join them. She does not like Bowser for the trouble he causes with her friends. She also does not like it that Bowser considers Yoshii his 3rd top enemy. That alone makers her despise Bowser even more.

Popple- Popple tricked Birdo into helping him. When she realized that he was a bad guy and had tricked her. She did her super uppercut move on him. Sending him flying out of the castle's window in front of Luigi and Mario. She helped the two brothers as they where going to engage in him. She has since hated him for his trickery and evil ways.


Birdo despite being a controversial figure early in her debut has become very popular. In fact, in 2016 Nintendo listed her as some of the most important female Mario Characters. She was listed along with Peach, Daisy, Toadette, Pom Pom, Lady Bow, Kammy Koopa, and Roselyn as being important female characters.

Now what is not known is when she was an enemy had Wart controlled her with his spell. Some have wondered this because after Wart is defeated she is not a bad character anymore and becomes a good character. However, it is highly speculated that she reformed on her own and realized that evil was wrong. It could be that she was young at that time and may have been tricked. It is also possible that she just reformed. Regardless, she went from a enemy to an ally in the games.

Mario and his friends enjoy her company and consider her an ally as well as a friend. Likewise she considers them a friend too. She is very affectionate toward her boyfriend, which is Yoshii. Birdo despite her vain personality. Has good intentions and a personality that is described as good. On the other hand, she has shown she can hold her own when need to especially if she feels like her friends are in danger.
