Goompa is a member of the Goomba species that first appeared in Paper Mario. Even though, he is a supporting character. The player can learn a lot about him throughout the game including his past. Indeed, at the surface he seems like a supporting character, but there is more to him. So, lets learn about him.

Goompa is a pun of the name goomba and grandpa. He is the elder of Goomba Village. He has a soon GoomPa and is the grandfather to Goombarior and Goombelia sometimes spelled as Goombella. He lives peacefully in Goomba Village until the events of Paper Mario.

During the events of Paper Mario, Bowser steals the Star-Rod and imprisons the 7 star spirits. He raises Peach's Castle up in the air causing a massive quake. Mario tries to stop the madness but Bowser knocks him out the window. Mario lands in Goomba Village. The Goomba find him and take him to a nearby Toad house to recover.

Before the Quake Goompa was shown working on his house's porch. Mario is fixing to head to Toad Town when Kammy Koopa causes a big boulder to fall. Mario retrieves Goompa's hammer. The elder Goompa gives it to Mario to help him in battle. He then tells Mario to take his grandson Goomario to help him in his quest.

Later in the game his past is revealed. It is revealed in his youth he was good friends with Koopa Koot and Bootler. In addition, it was revealed that he was a powerful fighter and even sparred with the Master in his younger days. This is evident when he tells Mario that back in his day he was a fighter and he could mix it up. He would go with Mario on his quest but age has caught up with him as he has a bad back now.

Appearance- Goomapa has white hair due to his advanced age. He usually wears a green hat. The hat could refer to that he is the village elder. Overall, he appears to be a dark brown Goomba, his feet are tanned. Like all Goombas he does have fangs.

Personality- Goompa is a respected individual and seems to be the leader or elder of Goomba Village. He is very wise due to his past experiences. He is dedicated to his family, he loves his wife, cares for his son, and really likes his grand kids. In fact Goombario states that Goompa tells them stories about his adventures and has also taught him self defense by showing him moves he learned and by giving him books by the Master.

He is still adventurous even in his old age. This is evident when he states to Mario he would like to go with him if he could. However, he seems to know his limits due to his age.

Furthermore, he believes in self defense. He states how he taught his son self defense, and how he has taught his grandchildren self defense. Later in the game it is revealed that he was a powerful fighter and earned awards from the Master for his capabilities. He believes in standing up for what is right.

He is also offers encouragement. He tells Mario that he knows he can stop Bowser and that he will find a way to do it. He also tells Mario to take his grandson with him. He tells Goomario that he will be strong like he was, and his father is. He also states when Goombario comes back he will be a stronger goomba.

Despite being a family man, a former fighter, and really caring for his family. He does have a secretive side to him. When Mario retrieves a tape from him that belongs to Koopa Koot. He does not say what was on it, but he enjoyed listening to it. What was on the tap is never revealed. It is speculated it could have been rock music, a book being read or something else.

Abilities- Due to his advanced age Goompa now provides wisdom and hints. However, back in his youth he could hang with almost anybody. He may have had a hammer attack as he tells Mario this hammer helped me in fights when I was younger.

Attacks- Not much is known about Goompa's past attacks. It is hinted they must have been powerful as he sparred with the Master and trained under him. It is also hinted that he may have had a hammer attack in his youth.

Friends and allies- This are characters he is friends with.

Goombario- He really looks after his grandson, but also recognizes his grandson is coming into his own and is getting strong. He tells Mario to take him along with him.

Kooper- He also respects Kooper and offers him advice as well. Since Koopa Koot is the elder of Koopa Village. Kooper is also friends with his grandson.

Mario- Goompa recognizes Mario as the legendary hero. He makes sure to take care of Mario while he is injured. He offers encouragement to the hero. He gives Mario advice and his hammer to help him in his quest.

Other helpers- He is friends with Mario's other party members.

Koopa Koot- Koopa Koot and Goompa are best friends. Both now are respected elders in their village. He still talks to his longtime friend.

Bootler- He is also good friends with Bootler as they are also childhood friends.

Peach- He respects Peach and considers her to be the ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom. He was sad that Peach got captured.

The Master- He used to train under him and even sparred with him. There is a lot of respect as a student teacher relationship. But it is revealed they where also friends as well.

Enemies- These are the characters Goompa is enemies with.

Jr. Troopa- He is proud of Goombario for standing up with him. But when Jr Troopa suckers punches Goompa he states back in my days I could easily take care of that kid. He hates Jr. Troopa for being an arrogant bully.

Bowser- He does not like Bowser for capturing Peach, injuring Mario, and causing the massive quack that did damage to his village. He wants Bowser to be defeated.

Kammy Koopa- He does not like Kammy Koopa either because she serves Bowser. But also she caused Boulders to fall near their house cutting off their village. Until Mario used his hammer to smash the large boulder.

Overall, at first it seems like Goompa is just a support character. What I mean is a character that provides support to the players such as advice and hints. However, there is more to him than just being a support character. During the game of Paper Mario it is revealed, he used to be a powerful fighter, an adventure seeking person, among other things. Now due to his age he mainly provides hints. He is highly respected and really cares for his family. In addition, he also really cares about his family. This concludes his biography.
