Proto Man is Mega Man and Rolls Brother. He plays an important role in the Mega Man franchise. Often helping his brother fight against Dr. Wily. So just who is Proto Man? I am going to go into more details about this character.

Proto Man was one of the first robots created by Dr. Light and Wily. He was designed to be a fighting robot one who would fight against evil. Proto Man could charge his buster, copy weapons, and he uses a shield as well. He was going to be the first robot of his kind that is how he got his name Proto Man.

However, Proto Man's core had a defect in it that caused him great pain. Even though he had a strong sense of justice he had an independent streak in him. Dr. Light was going to repair his core however Proto Man got scared and vanished. This took place before Dr. Wily went bad. When Dr. Wily went haywire he took the other robots designed after Proto Man with him. He left behind Rock and Roll. Rock was converted into the fighting robot Mega Man designed off of Proto Man.

After the events of Mega Man 2 Dr. Wily found Proto Man dying. He repaired Proto Man's core switching it from solar to Nuclear. This restored Proto Man to his functions. However, Proto Man saw how evil Dr. Wily was. He felt a strong connection to Mega Man.

He watched Mega Man fight against Dr. Wily forces In Mega Man 3. Proto Man decided to train Mega Man on how to use new weapons to stop Dr. Wily. In fact, Proto Man saved Mega Man from the collapsing castle by bringing him to Dr. Light's lab before vanishing. Dr. Light reveals that Proto Man is Mega Man and rolls older brother.

In the events of Mega Man 4 Proto Man freed Dr. Cossack's daughter who was being held hostage by Wily. He exposed Wily's plot to Mega Man and once again assisted him. Dr. Wily stated Proto Man had betrayed him since Wily fixed his core. Proto Man fights besides Mega Man. Thus, Wily felt betrayed by him.

Dr. Wily decided to get even with Proto Man by framing him for the events of Mega Man 5. Wily even had a fake Proto Man robot to frame the real one. People started questioning why had Proto Man gone bad. However, Proto Man and Mega Man exposed the plot and Proto Man's name was cleared.

Proto Man like his brother has a strong sense of justice. This is why he has assisted him in his battles against Dr. Wily. He also cares for his brother often showing up to help him or pull him out of a jab. Proto Man saved Mega Man three times. In Mega Man 3 he pulled Mega Man out of the collapsing fortress. In Mega Man 8, he showed up to make sure Mega Man was going to be okay. In Mega Man 9 he gets a knocked out Mega Man out of the self destructing fortress.

Personality wise Proto Man is like his brother. He longs to fight for peace and stop evil no matter who is doing it. He wants to defeat Dr. Wily. He believes in protecting humans as well. However, unlike his brother he is independent in nature and is more introverted. Mega Man is more social while Proto Man does not like crowds or socializing. He is more of a wonder but appears to be always watching.

Proto Man contains a powerful buster similar to his brothers. He can generate a lot of energy in his big bang strike. However, this knocks him out and it takes several hours for him to recover. He can copy other robot masters weapons. Also, he uses his shield. as a weapon and defense.

Now sometimes he battles his brother. However, this is only to train him in using new weapons. He trains his brother in Mega Man 3. In Mega Man 7 he trains his brother how to use the thicker armor suit.

Some people think Proto Man is evil. This was mostly due to Ruby Spear's cartoon. In that cartoon Proto Man was Wily's right hand man and wanted to destroy mega Man. However, this is not canon according to Capcom. In fact, the cartoon was criticized for making Proto Man into a villain. Many people pointed out in the video games that Proto Man was a hero just like his brother. Still there were a few people who believed he was evil.

Relationships wise Proto Man is close to his brother Mega Man and his sister Roll. He respects Dr. Light as he is his creator. He is just a little untrusting. Despite Wily fixing his core he despises the evil doctor. He constantly reminds Wily of his evil ways when fighting against him. He has helped foil Wily's plans time and time again. Proto Man doesn't hate Bass but tries to show Bass that his arragonce is what is getting the best of him. He also reminds Bass that Mega Man fights for good what is Bass fighting for.

Him being a good whistler is a reference to his iconic tune he does when he appears. As I mentioned he has a strong sense of justice and is a fighting robot like his brother.

His bad point is a reference that Proto Man is shy and does not like crowds.

His likes are straight forward.

He dislikes villians due to his strong sense of justice and seeing how evil Wily is. He does not like interviews due to his shy and anti social nature.


Mega Man Co creator Kenji has stated that Zero's color template is based off of Proto Man. When Kenji decided to create a new Mega Man franchise he wanted one of the heros to be a red robot like Proto Man is in the Mega Man franchise. Therefore he based Zero's color template off of Proto Man. In a way Zero has a lot of personality traits like Proto Man. Like Proto Man assists his brother Mega Man. Zero assists his best friend X in battles.
