Dr. Albert Wily is the archenemy of Mega Man. He has appeared in every Mega Man game trying to take over the world. He is constantly foiled by Mega Man and his brother Proto Man in his schemes. He is even sometimes foiled indirectly by Bass, which is ironically one of his creations. Still he never gives up. He often ranks high among video game villains. So what is Dr. Wily's background.

In their younger days Dr. Wily and Dr. Light were friends and colleagues. They created a lot of robots to be helpful for humans. They created Proto Man the proto type of a fighting robot that would fight for justice. Both scientists were winning awards although Light was winning more. Dr. Wily invented a device called the Super Gear that would make robots more powerful but push them to their limits. The world council which both Light and Wily were a part of were concerned about Wily's inventions. Wily's project was scrapped. Light told Wily that his ideas were good but they could be dangerous since they were not well tested.

This angered Wily. Now there are different theories on what happened. Some theories is that Dr. Wily had world domination on his mind from the get go and that is why he worked on devices to increase power. Another theory is due to jealousy he turned bad to prove his point. Moreover, it could be a combo of both. He had evil intentions from the get go, got mad and decided to prove himself. Capcom has not really said why. But these theories make the most sense.

Dr. Wily took 6 of his and Dr. Lights robots and reprogrammed them to try to take over the world. He left behind Mega Man (Rock) and Roll because he felt like they were not useful. Proto Man had already vanished by this point. Rock was modified into the fighting robot Mega Man. Mega Man defeated Dr. Wily.

Due to being defeated by Mega Man he created 8 robot masters of his own and sent them after Mega Man. He also was going to use his 8 new robots to take over the world. But he was defeated by Mega Man.

Dr. Wily acted like he had turned from his evil ways. He started working with Light again. He also found Proto Man and repaired him as Proto Man had a defect in his system. Wily though could not control Proto Man. Proto Man having a strong sense of justice rebelled against Wily. Eventually he joined his brother Mega Man. Wily acting good again though was a ruse.

Dr. Wily would create more schemes. He blackmailed a young scientists Dr. Cossack but Proto Man exposed the plot to Mega Man Cossac was allowed to go in peace. In an attempt to get even with Proto Man for rebelling against him and joining Mega Man. He tried to frame Proto Man.

One of Wily's most dangerous schemes involved creating alien robots that could not be harmed by weapons. These robots were called the star droids. He built them based off the alien robot Sunstar. Mega Man could not even defeat the Stardroids until Light changed his weapons. Eventually he was foiled.

During the events of Mega Man 6. Wily discovered a new power source Bassnium. Wily built a robot that had all the traits of Mega Man and Proto Man. Wily's new Robot was named Bass. Bass could copy weapons, and do everything that Mega Man and Proto Man could do. However Bass did not activate during Mega Man 6. Wily was captured and sentenced to prison.

However Wily broke out of Jail and Bass activates. At some time Wily built Treble to help Bass. Bass and Wily were defeated. Wily went on to use evil energy and nearly perished in the process.

Eventually Wily started developing an early version of his secret project a virus that effects Robots. Wily tried to use this virus to conquer the world. He was foiled by Mega Man and Proto Man. Bass also foiled his plans for making such a dangerous thing.

Wily's though was creating something more dangerous. At the end of the Mega Man fighting games. Wily revealed he was working on a new type of robot a robot that was not really a robot at all. This Robot would be more powerful than Mega Man or Bass's power combined. He also revealed he was working on his secret project.

The robot Wily was building was Zero the secret project would later become the Sigma Virus. Wily would play a huge role in the X series years after his death. His legacy would also torment the world decades after his death.

Even though the Maverick wars take place several decades after his death it is revealed that people of the world still talk about how mad Wily was.

Ironically Wily's last project Zero and the virus fulfilled two of his goals. Before Wily went haywire he wanted to create a super hero. Zero became a high ranking Maverick Hunter and became that super hero. On the other hand, he wanted to create something that could be used to rule the world. The Sigma Virus is used to rule the world centuries after his death. As sigma uses the virus to corrupt reploids to do his bidding.

Still, Wily played a huge role in the X franchise. There is evidence that Wily may have lived on after his death similar to Dr. Light. There is strong evidence that Wily is Serges from Mega Man X2. Serges looks like Wily. Serges also built a zero body from scratch. The only person to know Zero from the inside and out was Wily his creator. In Mega Man X5 Sigma claims to have talked to Wily about the Virus increasing Zero's power even though it does not make him go maverick since the original virus left Zero and entered Sigma. In Mega Man X6 Isoac could also be Wily. Isoac claims to know Zero inside and out. He also claims he knows how Powerful Zero is. As Isoac claims before he vanishes you are the most powerful thing on earth. Again only Wily would know this.

Wily comes up with different schemes every time not matter how many times he is foiled. His most dangerous schemes come to pass after his death. Wily is a geniuses and great strategists. He is powerful and persistent. Even though he is evil and has done some very dangerous things. It is hinted that deep down he might have some slight good in him. This is evident when he states he does not want to kill Dr. Light he just wants to best him and defeat his creations. He also was not destroyed when he contacted evil energy.
