9 Years ago when I was 11 years old I got Super Mario 64 for Christmas on my Wii and for some reason the game really was special to me I loved how you could get stars out of order and I found the movement a lot of fun and after I finished 100%ing it I thought to myself it's now my goal to 100% every 3D Mario game. Of course being 11 I didn't know how long it would take for me to be able to even own every 3D Mario game but I was set on it and I don't know that I've ever been set on something and failed to do it I wanted to play the other 3D Mario's so much that after 100%ing 64 I started a new save and did it again right after since the wait was going to be a while. During the next year I think around the time 3D World was announced I got Super Mario Galaxy and started marathoning it through the summer on my Wii I thought the game was incredible and I really liked some of the levels that was more open and gave me similar vibes to 64 though I heard about the secret level for getting all 120 stars as both Mario and Luigi and I was so pumped thinking it would be some ultra challenging level needless to say I was disappointed. Next I got 3D Land on my 3DS I remember doing really well on hitting the top of the flag pole I only missed it on one level in the entire game but the final level was pretty challenging for me at the time but I knew playing the game I definitely didn't like it as much as 64 or Galaxy. Around this time I really wanted to play Sunshine to see how the game following 64 was in comparison to Galaxy or 3D Land but anytime I saw it in stores it was over 80$ so I would have to wait quite a while before embarking on my journey through Isle Delfino. Instead the next game I played through was kind of Super Mario 3D World I say kind of because I didn't end up 100%ing it until this year but I remember enjoying the game more than 3D Land and thinking Champions Road was so challenging and pushed me to my limits until I randomly while playing with my cousin and us struggling with it being like watch me beat it first try with blue toad even though I haven't played as him all game and he has the lowest jump and I somehow did. After putting in the effort on the Wii U to get through Champions Road with every character I just couldn't beat every level 5 times due to my lack of controllers to make it easier. Instead the next game I beat was Super Mario Galaxy 2 which I had beaten the main story of Galaxy 2 before but the green stars had eluded me up to this point so replaying the game and finding all the green stars was a fun time and when I finally got to the Perfect Run my limits were once again tested it took me an hour and forty minutes straight of attempts but I finally beat the Perfect Run which at the time left Sunshine, 64 DS, and 3D World. I played 64 DS for a bit during these years before Odyssey was announced but I hated how the controls felt compared to OG 64 so I didn't make much progress on completing it. In fact the next Mario game I would make progress in was Super Mario Odyssey but unlike the other games Odyssey wasn't done in a couple weeks or even a month it was the very first game I had on my Switch but it took over a year because I didn't beat Odyssey 100% until December 2019! Odyssey at first beating the main story felt really disappointing to me and I thought it was really lackluster but as I started just exploring more and getting moons I really started to like the game more and more but the problem was I honestly think Odyssey went on way to long with some of the moons that just felt like complete filler that added nothing to the game. Following Odyssey I didn't have any clear plans on how to 100% the 3 games I still needed to cause 64 DS just wasn't fun to me, Sunshine was too expensive, and I don't live with my grandparents where my Wii U is but all that changed in September 2020. During the Mario 35th Anniversary direct first 3D World + Bowser's Furry was announced which gave me the perfect chance to 100% the game and also meant I had more work to do with the new Bowser's Furry meaning my goal was once again further away but that didn't bother me too much I was just happy to have new 3D Mario content to play, and even more exciting Super Mario 3D All Stars was announced which I had to buy for Sunshine. Once that came out later in the month I instantly started working on beating Super Mario Sunshine finally after waiting so many years to play it and to be honest it kicked my *** I was really caught off guard on how hard Sunshine proved to be and don't even get me started on going after all 240 blue coins what a nightmare! Even with my struggles the game took me roughly 2 weeks to beat which I was happy for and gave me plenty of time off before 3D World + Bowser's Furry was released. Once the game released I wasted no time playing through and 100%ing Bowser's Furry which I thought was a blast and with it being on the shorter side gives me hope we see a longer game in that style sooner rather than later. To be honest I don't have an exact timeline for when I started working on 3D World but due to me having a pro controller and the joy cons I was able to make it so I only had to play every level twice which made the process of 100%ing the game be slightly more bearable. Once I had finally 100%ed 3D World the only game standing in my way to my goal was 64 DS so in a way I had to go back to where it all began. Despite all my issues with 64 DS over the course of a solid week or two I was able to get to 124 stars but after going through one of my least favorite stages Tiny Huge Island I put the game down laying aside the game for other things for months so close to my goal... Until this week where I couldn't remember how close I was so I picked it up and thought I need to do this before they release another Mario game. With that thought I pretty quickly that night got to 141 stars after going through and grabbing some easy stars in Hazy Maze Cave which was all of them except the 100 coin star cause I hate it so I put it off and then I did every star in Tick Tock Clock which I was really nervous to play cause I was scared DS would ruin my favorite level and it would just be way harder due to my issues with the controls. To my surprise Tick Tock Clock was still my favorite level and they actually made it easier by moving where the blue coins spawned causing me to get the 100 coin star by complete accident and also cause Luigi is overpowered following that night the only stars remaining were almost all of the ones in Rainbow Ride, Hazy Maze Cave 100 coin, and the 2 in the last Bowser level. Which brings me to tonight where I picked the game up and thought I might get 1 star maybe.. and well the game challenged me for sure really tested my will because I hate the Rainbow Ride 100 coin star and I got 80 coins and fell off probably 5 times and had to start over talk about an unlikable level. Luckily I had forgotten some of the stars in Rainbow Ride were kind of easy so the minus the 100 coin one it didn't give me too much trouble. Hazy Maze Cave 100 coin was long tedious and as annoying as ever but I was able to get it done leaving just Bowser in the Sky! Because 64 DS adds new stars I was really scared of what the added star might be like but to my surprise it was a really easy switch star where you have a certain amount of time to grab it after hitting a switch I hit like 2 walls long jumping and still was able to make it in time. The red coins were super easy because I've had those memorized for years giving my 150th star leaving just one final battle with Bowser to achieve the goal 11 year old me set out to do. So I threw Bowser around like I always do and watched the final cutscene to Mario 64 DS which was weird seeing it acting like Yoshi is the main character after 100%ing Mario 64 5 times over the years but as I watched that credit roll with that amazing credits theme I almost got emotional knowing after 9 years I finally did it. I know it's a silly goal cause it's not like 3D Mario games are just gonna stop coming out but I guess I've always felt like I owed it to younger me to fulfil my goal and to finally do that after 9 years just feels special/important to me. I know more Mario games will come out but I know I'll always be ready to 100% them. Thanks for taking the time to read this long thread if you've made it this far have you ever had a goal in a game/game series like this?
Edit I realized this might fit better in Dead Platinum than in just video game franchises so I moved it here despite not being a trophy since it is a goal I had in gaming that I'm discussing.

Congratualtions on the achievement. It's a great personal goal that you set yourself and managed to achieve that's for sure.

For me it's hard to say if i have a franchise in mind that i have to complete to this degree. Mainly because a lot of the games i play fall in two catergories... Long tedious RPGS to plat.. Or sports/racing games that are also a nightmare to plat lol.

Honestly i think reaching trophy level 500 on psn was the biggest one i can think of recently, and honestly since i achieved that i haven't actively really seeked out or had the motivation to do more trophy hunting.

SonicOlmstead : Nice work, man. I need to get back on track with finishing the 100% on the 3D All Stars version of Mario 64 at some point but I haven’t even beat the game yet to be honest but I will get around to both eventually.

I’m not sure you have this beaten yet. I heard Mario is getting a new game with Rabbids and I don’t know if that’ll be in 3-D. Most likely so when it comes out… you better 100% that game

Reading your thread I haven’t seen any mentions to Mario Party, Paper Mario ( I don’t know if that’s 3-D) super Mario rpg unless you think that’s pseudo 3-D which understandable. Or the rabbids series. Interesting

becerra95 : You bring up a fair point and in response, I say I never wanna play a game where the advertisement says first you can slide and then you can slide and then on this turn slide again and finally slide into a bomb and then throw it at the other enemies I've never thought a Mario game looked so boring in my life. That being said my actual goal is just to do with the platforming Mario's that are considered part of the main Super Mario series or whatever people consider those games I mentioned before as so I'm done until another main 3D Mario game comes out.

I mean if you’re saying every main line of Mario games then what about super Mario land 1 and 2? I mean granted they aren’t 3-D but they were considered part of the main line Mario series if that’s something if you want to beat EVERY main line Mario game instead of just 3-D

becerra95 : I mean just the 3D ones though that being said there's honestly not a lot of 2D platformer Mario games I've not beaten besides the 2 Mario Land games you mentioned which I've just never gotten around to I believe the only games I've not beaten are the 2 versions of Mario 2 which I have no plans of playing Mario USA, Lost Levels on the other hand me and Furret started a month or so back I believe and got up to around world 6 and I didn't think it was unbearable in terms of difficulty so far but I'm curious if the last few worlds are just going to be stupid in what the game expects from us.
