I hope this is the right place to ask this. I am considering picking up a 2ds because you can get them now at stores with a Mario game for only $80. My primary interest in it is to possibly play retro games on it (nes, sms, snes, and maybe Atari and Genesis).
I know you can get flash carts that you can copy games into and load a file for running the emulation for the given system. My question is- how possible is this these days? Are there any “catches” to doing this? How do these games run in this environment on a 2ds/3ds?

Thanks in advance for any responses!

I'm not exactly sure about a (new) 2DS but it's fairly simple to hack 3DS's these days, and all models are compatible with some method. You shouldn't need a flashcart for it to my knowledge. I probably can't link it here but if you look up guides to installing CFW on the 3DS (it'll include 2DS results) the first result should be a good research starting point. From there you can install homebrew that will let you emulate games that are on your SD card.

There's also no catch (besides it being a tiny bit dangerous if you mess anything up, but as long as you follow the guides you'll be fine) - Nintendo doesn't really care what you do with your 3DS anymore. You can even go online with pirated 3DS games and they won't do anything.

Just get an r4i gold, use their guide to hack your 2DS, then you can load roms into an injector (As they're called.) which plants them onto your 3DS home screen. You can then fill the r4i with DS roms as well.

There are some sites that allow you to download roms via QR code, but you still need it hacked before this.
