Story wise, maybe. But game play, graphics, and new features wise, Usually sequels are better. Usually only in movies and TV is the original better. Video games are another story.

It's hard to say. In some cases the first game was better. (Mario Galaxy 1 and 2)
But then we have some games where the sequel is way better.(The Pokemon series, LoZ series)

So I have to say that the sequels are better, just because nowadays it seems that the sequels really are better.

well, depends on the game, I haven't tried mother yet but I HAVE tried mother 3 and it's WAY better than mother 2, but I'm pretty sure that ocarina of time was much more decent than majora's mask. so I think it depends on the series

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Game series like Halo, Sly Cooper, Ratchet&Clank, Jak and others have immproved with each new game. Others however such as Sonic, Crash, Megaman and Rayman just keep getting worse.
