Mega Man WC2 - Hyper Edition Turbo! Review by: tornadocam - 8.5/10

Mega Man 2 Turbo
Mega Man 2 is often regarded as the game that made Mega Man an icon and put the game series on the map. In fact, I remember when Mega Man 2 came out around 1988. This was my first video game. It should be no surprise that they are lots of hacks out there of Mega Man 2. Mega Man 2 Turbo is a hack of the original MM2. How does this hack compare to the original game? Well lets find out shall we.

Story: 9

The Story has been changed a little in this game but it still is the same idea as the original. Dr. Wily after his defeat at the hands of Mega Man creates new Robots to conquer the world and beat Mega Man. Knowing this Mega Man ask Dr. Light to upgrade his speed and buster to match these new powerful robots and to put a storm to Dr. Wily.

Okay changing the plot to fit this game was done very nicely. The main plot is left unchanged. Mega Man 2 had a simple revenge plot so that was good that was not chanced in this case. I like changing the plot to match the title. So yeah the maker gets points for keeping the main plot line but changing it around to fit the title without messing the main plot up. I give it a 9 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 8

The graphics are totally different than the original Mega Man 2. But guess what they are still awesome. I really like the stage layouts it seems like it offers something new. In fact, after playing this game one will forget they are playing a hack of the original game. The colors are very nicely done they go with the background nicely. In addition, the sprites are very good just like they were in the original game. I really like what the maker was trying to do concerning the graphics.

The controls are not as smooth as the original game but not terrible either. As in the game's title the controls are fast. Mega Man is fast in this game. If you are not careful it is easy to slide off into a pit. It seems like the controls can be best described as being ice physics. Other than that the controls are for the most part nicely done. Therefore I give the graphics and controls a solid 8 out of 10.

Sound: 9

Mega Man 2 had a very good soundtrack a lot of the tunes are memorable Woodman is my favorite from the original game. This game uses a different soundtrack. Normally, I'm not a fan of changing the sound in games if it is not broke do not fix it. But the maker of this hack did it right. I really like the sound tracks in this game even though it is not the original. I like how other tunes from Mega Man games are used. I recognized a lot of them from Mega Man X3 and Mega Man V for game boy. Those two games had some of the best sounds in them. So I was glad to hear them again. I was also glad that the maker took other Mega Man track sounds. Mega Man's buster sounds about the same as the original game. Enemy shots sound about the same too. I give the sound a nice score of 9 out of 10.

Replay and Depth: 8

The replay value of this hack is very good. The way the game is designed it makes you forget one is playing  a hack. It seems like Mega Man Turbo has something new to offer. I really had fun playing this one. I have played other hacks of MM2 some where very good and others not bad but nothing really special. This is one that is very good. I certainly will play this one again.

The depth in this game is typical of most Mega Man games. Mega Man games are known for their high amount of depth in them. The stages are decent length just like they were in Mega Man 2. The maker did not cut down the depth at all which is very great. There are still secret items to find, power ups to collect, weapons to earn, and alternating paths. To me that is what makes Mega Man games so of the best games I enjoy games that have a lot of stuff to find and games that have secrets. The only thing is you cannot revisit stages so its a one shot when getting items. I give the replay value and depth a solid 8 out of 10.

Difficulty: 9

Mega Man 2 had its difficult spots in it but overall it was not a really hard game to play. In fact Mega Man 2 is often the game that new Mega Man players are introduced too. I would say the original had a difficulty of around 6. This version is a lot more difficulty and challenging. The main reason is mega man is faster in this game and enemy placement.

Mega Man increased speed increases the difficulty in this game a lot. If you are not careful you can slide off right into a pit or miss a jump. To make matters more difficult is the game plays like you are on ice. Mega Man is very fast in this game and you will side in this game as if you are on ice. The good news is if you think your going to fast you can jump to slow Mega Man down. I don't mind Mega Man being faster in this game but just be aware it can add to some trickery.

Enemy placement is more numerous in this game than the original game. Enemies just love to gang up on you, hang around pits and their shots are more powerful. It is very common to get surrounded quick or get hit and go to your doom. In addition, with Mega Man being faster it would not be fair if the enemies were slower now would it, of course not. The enemies are also faster in this game and that can make them harder to dodge or take out.  The bosses are also a lot faster in this game. Moreover, the attacks seem to do more damage than the original game. A lot of the enemies do a lot of damage compared to the original game. Bosses attacks also do a lot of damage.

Now it should be noted you have two difficulty settings in this game normal and conquer. I played the normal mode by default. If you play the conquer version enemies do a lot more damage so its best to not get hit while playing conquer mode. Both modes though are similar except conquer you can only take 2 or 3 hits and you are done.

Overall I give the difficulty a solid 9 out of 10. The game is difficult but doable. This is the right terms of difficulty is it offers a challenge. I like games that offer a challenge as I have wrote in my other reviews it makes conquering them an accomplishment. However, you can expect to die a lot in this game. So why does the game not get a 10 out of 10. Well, that is because the game tries to help you out by making extra lives plentiful in this game. A lot of the stages have more than 2 or 3 extra lives so if you need one you can easily pick one or two up. It is like the game is saying I know this is a difficult game but I'm trying to help you out. I think that is what the maker was aiming at.

Overall: 8.5

Mega Man Turbo I feel like offers something new despite being a hack of an original game. I really believe the maker took a lot of time into developing this game and it shows. I really like how the graphics and designs were changed. To me that makes me think that I am not playing a hack of an original game. It makes me think I'm playing a new Mega Man game. To me, that is how hacks should be offering something new and different

I also like the different stage layouts from the original game. It shows it took time, and creativity to make. As I stated under the graphics section it is a really nice touch. I also like the sprites in this game. In addition, I really like the soundtrack in this game. Mega Man 2 had a very good soundtrack other Mega Man games top 2's soundtrack they are just special to me. This version uses some of the tunes from my favorite Mega Man games. If your going to change the soundtrack in a game do it right and the maker did it right in this case.

This game has a lot going for it. However, they were a few negatives in this game. Mega Man being really fast does not bother me. The main problem is playing through the game as if Mega Man is walking on ice. I am not sure how I feel about that. On one hand, it makes the game a little more difficult and offers a challenge. On the other hand, it can be a real problem and lead to some problems. I noticed the ice physics in this game seems to effect the controls. I am not sure if that was intentional or not. But at times it seems like the controls go from fast to faster.  Unlike other Mega Man games you cannot revisit stages to me that is a real bummer. Basically as I stated under the difficulty section its a one trip grab all deal. If you do not get an item in a stage you will not be able to get it a second time.

Overall I give the game a solid 8.5. This game seems to offer something new, it is fun, and fits right into Mega Man games. I really had fun playing this game and it is one I will go back too. Would I recommend this game? Yes but only to novice players. If your a new player I do not recommend playing this game to you know how Mega Man games work. Before playing this game I would recommend playing the original Mega Man 2. Mega Man being really fast and the extra difficulty could turn players off from this game. If you are like me and are a novice player of Mega Man games than  yes I would recommend this game.

Anyway, this concludes my review of Mega Man 2 Turbo. I hope you take the time to play this game and enjoy it. Blessings in Christ and have fun
