It seems that those 2 Garfield games that I reviewed for the Game boy advance are not the only Garfield games In this world, In 1989, Some Japanese developers released another Garfield title, bu for the NES, Now this was only released in Japan, Cause I think If they served this to us Americans, we would've ripped them a new one, But anyways, this is A week of Garfield for the NES. Let's get started shall we?
Story-6/10
I don't know how to put this, But in the title screen of the game, Odie is running away from Garfield, So the plot actually seems to be that Odie has been kidnapped by these evil neighborhood cats, And It is now up to our favorite big orange cat to save him, Now If I'm correct, He must save him by the end of the week, Hence the title (A week of Garfield) I'm pretty sure that Is what my friend told me, But anyways, on to the gameplay!
Gameplay-6/10
A week of Garfield is your typical platformer game, You control the big orange cat Garfield, as you adventure through more then 4 big levels defeating bad guys and doing whatever, Garfield has quite a few attacks at his disposal, and they are all organized by picture in the game hud, I can't even tell what those pictures look like. So as for the enemies you will be fighting, they are really no thrills! Enemies include spiders, frogs, dogs, cats, birds, etc. The controls are pretty simple to understand, A is jump, B is attack, and Select lets you switch between your attacks. And as usual, you will also be collecting various items, such as invincibility, more attacks to use, keys to open up doors, etc. There are hardly any bosses in the game, except in the last level. One problem I have with the game, from what I have played, you cannot jump on enemies! If you do, then you just end up losing health, Second, some of the enemies are way too overpowered! As you see, the game is actually not that bad so far...everybody has been panning It as I see. But there are still some gripes with It.
Graphics-8/10
If there is one thing that the developers got right, It is the graphics. In my opinion, the graphics are pretty good for a Japanese only NES game! All the levels and wolds you will be exploring are big, bright, and bursting with color, And that is one important aspect when making a cartoon game, you got to make sure It feels like what It is based on. As for the character sprites, they are pretty well done too, They are all recognizable, like Garfield himself, and his friend Odie as well, Even though you won't see odie as much in this game as you expected. The HUD is quite complicated actually, It shows how much life power you have left, how many points you have earned in all, And your currently selected weapon. I am going to be honest, For a Japanese only game, They did quite a good job bringing the orange cat to the game world!
Sound-6/10
For the music and sound In this game, It is really nothing to write home about, It is just sub-standard generic sounding music that gets really repetitive after a while, Actually I'm just playing with you guys, The music is really good! It sounds really bright, happy, and fits the mood for each level. As for the sound effects, they are pretty good as well, You get your typical boings, rings, booms, etc. And when you grab the invincibility power-up, You get really happy music. You see, this is one of the departments that the game does do really good In!
Addictiveness-5/10
Is this a game that I am ever going to play again? Um...I'm not really sure, I did have SOME fun with It, but in all other parts, The game did give me alot of trouble, Such as that darn final level! The game also doesn't have a save or continue feature, which means If you die once, you're back at square one! Couldn't of you at least put that developers?
Depth-4/10
I am sorry to say this, But once you beat the game, there is nothing to get after that! No extras, no nothing! But the game is however 4-6 levels long, so you can probally beat It in a hour or so.
Difficulty-9/10
The game's highest point, the difficulty. While Garfield's jump to the Nintendo entertainment system was pretty good, But if there is one problem, It is that, IT CAN GET FLIPPING HARD! Oh man did I die and die and die in the later levels of this game, But I was able to beat It with savestates on whatnot, that Is good!
Overall-6.7/10
So in general, If you ever want to play this game, I suggest you do! This game is clearly not as bad as everyone says It is! But there are still SOME minor gripes with It. I gave this game a 6.7 because how much fun It is for a licensed game. So see you guys in my next review!
