"Panic" is certainly the right word for it.   NovemberJoy
Everybody knows about the USA version of Super Mario Bros. 2, of course - it was an all-around great game in (almost) every aspect. The controls were fluid, the levels were well-designed, and it was overall fun to play. Almost everyone also knows that it wasn't the real SMB2, which was Japan-exclusive until it was released as part of the Super Mario All-Stars collection as Super Mario Bros.:The Lost Levels - instead, it was an Americanized version of a game called Doki Doki Panic. But how many people know just how different the US SMB2 was from this original game? Not many, I'm guessing.
Graphics - The (almost) Identical Clone
For the most part, the graphics are the same as they are in SMB2. We have the same structures, the same enemies...but wait? What's this? Some of the graphics are actually different! Instead of koopa shells, you pick up and throw disembodied pitch-black heads at enemies! Instead of magic potions, you throw genie lamps to open doors to Subspace! Instead of looking menacing, Phanto just looks really bored of his job! The waterfalls flow stupidly fast! You get the picture.
+The graphics still look quite good.
-Most of the graphical changes from this version were for the better
Sound - Japan gets extra equipment and they still can't get it right!
For the most part, the music is also the same, though there are some differences. The Subspace music took on an Arabian feel in this version. But there are also extra notes added to the music, and totally different sound effects! Why does nobody mention them? Because they're AWFUL. The Subspace door-creation sound sounds more like a car horn, and that's not even the worst of it. You will dread fighting Birdo in this version, not because it's harder to fight, but because it makes noises when you hit it that are comparable to scraping at the insides of your ear with a rusty icepick.
+SOME of the music is still good
-The sounds for the Japan-exclusive sound chip are AWFUL
Gameplay - How did they screw it up so badly?
For the most part, the gameplay is almost exactly the same as it is in the US SMB2 - you run and jump around the magical dream world of Subcon, picking up and throwing enemies and items along the way. Even the level design is exactly the same as it is in the Mario version! But, unfortunately, there are some key differences that totally break the game, which were all fixed in SMB2.
For starters, though they are responsive, the controls just don't feel right. It's not like the characters slip and slide around like they have axle grease on their feet. It's the fact that they move so slowly and jump so poorly that it's a complete and utter chore to play. And to add insult to injury, none of the characters move any faster or jump any higher - they just have a few minor differences between each other. Let's see, the pink girl can float in the air for a short time, the blue wizard has a floaty jump, the fat guy can pluck things out of the ground instantly, and the skinny guy is basically useless. It's like they barely tested their game before they released it!
Even the LEVEL PROGRESSION is totally screwed up. The levels progress in a perfectly normal way...until you want to switch characters. Each character has their own "chapter progress" meter, and they have to work their way through each level individually. Oh, wait, the character you've been playing as is almost impossible to play this level late in the game as! Too bad you can't change characters without playing through all of the stages up to that point as the character you want to switch to!
I'd like to think that some guys who didn't know what they were doing made this game, but then I remembered that NINTENDO THEMSELVES made this game. Did they not know how to use their own sound chip properly? Did they fire all of their talented employees and hire them right back on after finishing this game? The questions are endless!
-Poor controls
-Unbalanced characters
-Terribad level progression system
+The level design is still the same as it is in SMB2, which wasn't bad
Addictiveness - Do you enjoy pain or something?
From all these problems with the game, I'm sure you can guess that the addictiveness is almost nonexistent. It just isn't fun to play like SMB2 is - it feels like some kind of cheap Chinese clone...
-It just isn't fun.
Storyline - The only book more evil than Twilight
The storyline is pretty basic, and it establishes the game's setting pretty well. Essentially, two children read a book and are pulled into it by a giant green claw, and the heroes jump into the book to save them. It does explain why things in the game are so weird...
+The story works pretty well for what it is
Depth - Actually pretty deep
Regardless of all the changes from version to version, most of the basics are still the same. There are still seven full worlds worth of levels to explore, secret warps to get you through the game that much quicker, and secrets in every single level. Now, if only the meat of the game held together...
+There's a lot of depth to the game, despite how basic it is
-It's hampered by the poor gameplay
Difficulty - Harder than it looks
Even though you can find extra health containers in each level, and you can restore your health just by killing a certain number of enemies, it's still quite difficult, mostly because the characters are so slow and ineffective. When they start throwing moving, jumping enemies that spit volleys of fireballs at you, you start to appreciate the Mario clone more and more. At least that game gave you the chance to dodge things!
+It does have enough difficulty to last any player a decent amount of time
-It's mostly fake difficulty imposed by the controls
Overall - Just play the Mario game instead
Playing this game, overall, is like rubbing a zit with sandpaper - it technically works, but it really, really hurts. Personally, if you really want to play this game, just go for SMB2 - it's ten times better than this mess.
Let's recap:
Pros -
+The graphics still look quite good.
+SOME of the music is still good
+The level design is as good as it was in SMB2
+The storyline works pretty well for what it is
+There's a lot of depth to the game, despite how basic it is
+It does have enough difficulty to last any player a decent amount of time
Cons -
-Most of the graphical changes from this version were for the better
-The sounds for the Japan-exclusive sound chip are AWFUL
-Poor controls
-Unbalanced characters
-Terribad level progression system
-It just isn't fun.
-The depth is hampered by the poor gameplay
-Most of the difficulty is fake difficulty imposed by the controls
Final Scores -
Graphics - 6/10
Sound - 4/10
Addictiveness - 2/10
Story - 6/10
Depth - 6/10
Difficulty - 9/10
FINAL SCORE - 5/10 (Even Nintendo has their screwups from time to time...)

Before Super Mario 2 there was Doki Doki Panic   tornadocam
Doki Doki Panic is a game American gamers did not know about till later. This game was released in Japan under Nintendo. If anybody has played this game they may think its almost the same game as Super Mario Brothers 2. Well I will shed more light on that later on in the review. In fact, I will often be comparing this game to Super Mario Brothers 2. So lets get started with the review.
Story: 8
One night children are reading a story when suddenly a green monster's hands pulls them into the story. The children that were pulled into the story call for help. The rest of the family Mamma, Papa, Imajin and Lina jump in the story. While doing so they discover a world taken over by strange enemies. The 4 set out to liberate the children and save this strange world from whoever has taken over.
Okay the plot is pretty basic and does a good job introducing the characters. I must say the plot offered something different then most games I have played. You do not have Bowser in this game trying to kidnapp Peach or Mega Man hunting Dr. Wily. So yeah when I first played this game it was like it was offering something different. I also like how they did the kidnapping in this game. The children being pulled in to the story they were reading really shows creativity. In other games somebody would just kidnapp the children or in Mario games Bowser would just show up and capture Peach. So this one was a different and something new.
The only thing is the plot does not give a real motive on why the children were pulled into the story. Maybe Nintendo wanted to keep that a mystery. In Super Mario Brothers 2 Mario and his friends heard cries for help and that is why they went into this strange world. But overall the plot is basic and easy to understand. I give it a good score of 8 out of 10.
Graphics and Controls: 7
The graphics in this game are for the most part good. But they did have some issues. The backgrounds look very colorful. Hills look like hills, waterfalls look like waterfalls and dungeons look like well dungeons. So the backgrounds were nicely done. I also like the colors of the enemies that was also nicely done.  The only thing with the graphics is the sprites can look a little fuzzy. The characters sprites seem to sometimes get out of whack when picking up things or throwing them. So yeah there are times in the game when your character might turn a little fuzzy graphic wise. In Super Mario Brothers 2 this problem was fixed. Other then that sprite problem the graphics were nicely done
The controls were mostly good but some of the characters seem to have a lag in them. I do not know if that was to reflect their strength and weaknesses. As some of the characters have a lot of power but not so great speed. It makes me wonder if that was done intentionally or not. I will say though rather it was done intentionally or not it can be annoying especially if your having to dodge enemies or progress through a stage.
So the sprites being out of whack and the lagging brings the graphics and controls rating down some. Even despite these problems the graphics and controls were for the most part good. Thus, I give it a good rating out of 7 out of 10.
Sound: 7
The soundtrack in this game was quite good and a lot of the music is catchy. I can see why Nintendo kept the same music for the most part for Super Mario Brothers 2. It is really good. The sounds for the most part are good. When you pick up an item the game gives a sound to let you know you have picked up an item. I also like it how some of the enemies have their own sounds. The problem with the sound comes when you have your character throw a veggie, item or another enemy to an enemy. It sounds like nails on a chalkboard when you throw things at enemies. I do not know why it made that sound or why that was done. To some people that would not bother them. But to me I hate tingles and scratchy sounds. In Super Mario Brothers 2 it was replaced with a much better pow or popping sound to let the player know they had hit an enemy. Therefore, I give the sound a good rating of 7 out of 10.
Replay Value: 7
I did not learn about this game till later. I had already played Super Mario Bros 2 as I got it when it first came out. It was several years later I learned that Super Mario Bros 2 was basically Doki Doki panic except the characters were replaced with Mario characters. So I thought I need to play Doki Doki panic just to see and compare the games. So I finally got a chance to play this game. I will tell you this is a fun game. I can see why Nintendo thought we will replace the characters with Mario Characters and we will have a huge hit on our hands. Its easy to see why they did that. No granted I play this game less because well its hard to beat Mario or Mega Man games. But this game is a fun game to play. So, I'm glad I discovered it. It offers something different for sure. As I stated I played Super Mario Brothers 2 a lot. So it is easy to see why they converted this game into a Mario game. When I want to take a break from Mega Man, baseball, Mario or Donkey Kong games its nice to play this game. I give it a good score of 7 out of 10.
Depth: 9
Doki Doki panic really shines in its depth. You can play through the game with 4 different characters. It must be noted whatever character you chose your pretty much stuck with them to the next world. Where as in Super Mario Bros 2 you could chose different characters for different stages. Some gamers might find that annoying. But i like it cause it makes you want to play through the game again with a different character. That really increases the depth to this game. In addition, there is 7 worlds to complete so the game takes time to complete. Moreover, there is also lots of items to collect. You can collect coins, power ups, and other items. There are even some secret rooms that can be discovered. So the game really makes you want to investigate everything. I really like games that have a lot of depth to them. So the depth of Doki Doki Panic really shines and as such it gets a high rating of 9 out of 10.
Difficulty: 6
This game's difficulty was really hard to rate for a few reasons. The difficulty depends on which character you chose. Some of the characters have a lot of power such as can pick up enemies with ease, throw them far and dig up ground faster. On the other hand the strong characters can't really jump that well nor can they run that fast. If you using one of these characters then  you can get hit, or miss a jump and fall into the pit.  Likewise if your using a speed character that can jump the pits are placed so they will not give you trouble. The problem is these characters take longer to pick up items or enemies. So its easy to get hit while using a speed character.
Also unlike Super Mario Bros 2 when you get hit and lose  enough of your health bar you do not return to normal size. In this game you just lose a life and have to start over again. In Mario games when you are down to your last health you return to normal size. So that lowers the difficulty down in this game. Also the game gives you chances to recover health. So its like the game is helping you out in by doing that.
While the game does have some tricky places and difficult spots. Its not really that hard of a game. The difficulty is mainly going to come from whoever you play the game through as. Also the game gives several chances to recover health. In Super Mario Brothers 2 the game's difficulty was increased.  So overall I give this game's difficulty a 6 out of 10.
Overall rating 8.1
Now I'm going to explain how this game is related to Super Mario Brothers 2. If you have played Super Mario Brothers 2 your probably saying well this is almost the same game and yes you are correct. You see Super Mario Lost levels was supposed to be Super Mario Brothers 2. They released the Lost levels in Japan. That game was just brutal in difficulty. Nintendo thought lost levels would turn people away from the Mario franchise which was very young. Also Nintendo thought the game would be too difficulty for Canada and American gamers. So, Nintendo took Doki Doki Panic changed things around a little bit and replaced the characters in Doki Doki Panic into Mario Characters. The  enemies in this game such as Ninja's, Snif-its, Shy Guys, and Birdo's as well as other enemies have become staples in future Mario games. So that is the Doki Doki Panic and Mario Brothers connection.
After playing this game its easy to see why Nintendo converted this to a Mario game and had a huge hit on their hands. Doki Panic is a fun game to play. The plot offers something new and is basic. The sound is catchy and the graphics were for the most part good. Also the enemies in this game are strangely kind of unique. So its easy to see why they became staples in future Mario games too. I really had fun playing this game.
Panic did have some flaws though. (It should be noted these were fixed in Super Mario Brothers 2). The sprites can drive you crazy as sometimes your character can get a little fuzzy. From what I have seen it does not effect all enemies. Enemies that spit things at you their sprites get out of whack. I do not know why that occurs. I first thought it was cause this was an 8 byte game, but then I noticed other 8 byte games did not have this problem.  The tingles and scratching sound when your character throws an item at an enemy is also annoying. To some it might not bother. But I have hearing tingles and scratchy sounds in a game. I cannot stand that. The difficulty could have been a little bit higher. I really like games that give you a challenge. I felt like I was not challenged till worlds 4 and up. Though it depends on which character your playing the game as.
Overall, to some people these problems would not bother them. Despite these flaws this game is a good game and it is a fun one. I enjoyed playing this game and yes I will play it again. I may not play it as much as the Mario version but still nice game. As I stated its easy to see why Nintendo converted this game into Super Mario Bros 2.  So would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. I would recommend this game to anyone who has not played Super Mario Bros 2 yet. I would recommend playing Panic first then the Mario version. On the other hand if you have played the Mario version then I would recommend you play this game. I would also like to add if your trying to introduce somebody to how classic Nintendo games play then this would be a good starting game. So I give Doki Doki Panic a good score of 8.1

Not too shabby for an original/english translated game.   SuperCrash64
Doki Doki Panic English translation:
Talking about a game that wasn't too bad, but had a better upgrade your looking at it. This game is Doki Doki Panic, and an English translation of the game. If you are wondering if this is a rehash of Mario brothers 2? Well first off yes it is,but however, this is the original game, but even being the original game. Wow it's not good as Mario Brothers Two, and for that reason; I just want to take back everything negative I said about Super Mario Brothers two US version. The reason I played the game was that I was bored one day, and after Playing some Super Mario Brothers two us version. I chose to see just how the original Japanese game turned out in comparison. After playing this game for a few hours, I found myself generally wanting to go back to play Super Mario Brothers two.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Graphics: Nine out of ten:
This is the original game.A little bit has changed, but overall lots of the same stuff remain.
The characters didn't fair that badly considering that they were actually pretty decent for the time being, but however, The bad thing being are the characters are not nearly as fluid as any of the characters in the Super Mario brothers two US game. The game also features some of the same enemies, same colors, etc. Some of the changes came for the better. Let's look at some of the weapons. For an example: You will see that this game has a weird sheep face thing that is capable of knocking out a lot of enemies if it's used right. In its clone game "Aka" Super Mario brothers two US. The black face item got replaced with a red koopa shell. Various other changes happened like the creepy ghost mask looking far more creepy on Super Mario Brothers two than this game. Now as for Level design not much has changed between the two games besides the item design.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sound: eight out of ten:
First off. Let me start by saying: Super Mario Brothers 2 US had by far the better sound. Most of the Jumping sound effects are here, but Unfortunately some of the sound effects on this game were swapped< for the better. For an example:If you fight Birdo she'll make this really weird bump effect. In other words: Birdo sounds more decent and less annoying on Super Mario Brothers two US than this game. The music for the game is almost the entire same thing minus a few differences here and there. However there were some changes: Some of the underground music plays a little bit faster than it would on Super Mario Brothers two US however, I kind of prefer the slow and dark beat on some tunes because it makes the tune sound better and more memorable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Addictiveness: Five out of ten:
On the contraire thanks to the game play of this gem not being nearly as good as Super Mario Brothers two US, and thanks to a lack of features. I would just play Super Mario Brothers two instead of this game. Reason being:
1)Less choppy characters.
2) It allows You to run which makes shortcuts more accessible, and allows levels to be beaten more quickly than it would on this game.
3)The computer difficulty is slightly more easier to tackle on Super Mario Brothers two US. Now why is the computer difficulty more harder on thisgame than Super Mario Brothers two US? It's because some of the ai movement is faster, and a little too fast at that point because at least on Super Mario Brothers two US I was able to finish up chapter 1, but one this game, I can't do the same thing, because of the rat boss being so quick with his bombs. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Story: six out of ten:
I didn't find the story bad at all. The plot of the game is to rescue two little kids who were reading a story book, but a monster from that book came, and kidnapped them.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Depth: Seven out of ten:
Doki Doki Panic or Super Mario brothers two US are both very well known for having lots of worlds and tricky level designs that take quite a lot of mastery to complete. You really need to learn how to get used to the various designs of the levels, and the physics of each character you play as. In order to really master this game. There are of course various shortcuts to the bosses of each level, hearts that will help
your life span, and the various keys that are used to unlock doors, and also; there are a lot of mini games and extra life's you can earn in the game. So yes lots of helpful stuff, but regardless this game can't be exactly rushed through. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Difficulty eight out of ten:
I've explained various reasons as to why this game is more challenging than Super Mario Brothers Two US, but however in general both games are very hard with their tricky level designs bosses, enemies, etc. I've never finished this game because of the overall challenge. (I honestly don't think I will finish it), but Still a very challenging yet fun gem in advance. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Overall: This game isn't too bad at all. I just really prefer Super Mario Brothers two US over this game.
I'll rate the game an overall 7.3
Edit: I seriously hate how stupid spacing can make a review look bad.

Doki Doki Panic (english translation) Game Description

This is the result of being bored. The only Japanese in the entire game was in the title. This translates the Kanji in the cloud, and modifies the "Doki Doki Panic" sprite. The ending has had a small change, too; it said "The End".

This is the game that Super Mario Bros. 2 was based off of. It's the same game as SMB2, except for different player characters and sounds. Oh, and Luigi's counterpart is a female, apparently.
