Nightmare on Elm Street Review   Marcmoney
Overall - 7.8
Nightmare on Elm Street was a great movie for the past decade.  It was very good, but on this game, it is slightly bad for the NES.  This game has 4-players in the game, which is pretty cool when you want to play with a bunch of friends.  There are some bad things about this game and some that are just weird. :S
Graphics - 8
The graphics are very good.  The part where it says "Freddy's Coming" makes it look scary. :) I really liked that because it was a scary wording.  What was weird in the game is that when you fall asleep, you can change into yourself that has a weapon, but the weirdest thing about it is your clothings.  It looks like you are wearing a tank top and panties.  Freaking disgusting, but his moves are better than his original self.
Sound - 8
The sound is good too.  The background sound is okay, the scary song that plays when Freddy appears is pretty cool.
Addictiveness - 7
I would play this often because like I said, it is a 4-player game and that you have a lot of lives in the game.  What I did find out was that there is a limit in how much you die.  I think you get like 5 continues and in those continues is 5 lives, so that is about 25 lives you have in the game.
Story - N/A
I could not find the story in the game, but in the game play, you are a person that is trying to stop Freddy and you have to go in houses and get bones to be able to fall asleep (sounds pretty stupid).  When you fall asleep, you go to the end of the level in the house to verse him, then his hand, then his other hand, I do not know what comes after that because I got a game over.
Depth - 7
The game has basic features.  When I said that a screen pops up saying "Freddy's Coming" it is like they took it from the game Castlevania II - Simon's Quest when it changes the day and night by a dialog box and stops your game for a few seconds.  Other than that, the controls are just related to other NES games.
Difficulty - 6
The game is kind of hard.  What I hated the most was that there was too many enemies in some of the levels.  The most annoying thing is in one of the levels, the bats can poop on you (I don't know what they drop), which is annoying cause I was trying to get a bone and I couldn't because the stupid bat kept dropping doo doo bombs on me. :S
Wrap Things Up...
Nightmare on Elm Street was one of those games that was made because of how popular the movie was.  I recommend trying this game, it is not that bad of a game, but is worth it if you are a fan of Freddy Kruger (might have misspelled that).  Also, watch some of his movies, they are very good. :)

Oh its a nightmare alright...   TetraDigm
Graphics: For being an NES game the graphics are actually rather good. The game has a nice dark atmosphere, well animated characters, and great transitions between the dream monsters and regular monsters.
Sound: The music/sound effects aren't annoying like in almost every NES game. Nothing memorable or special, but by no means one of those games that just makes you want to hit the mute button.
Addictiveness: Well there is none for me. The game lacks any sort of story, the levels are uninspired, and its full of cliché enemies that do nothing but wander back and forth or throw something at you. The difficulty is quite high, while not being the hardest game ever, its merciless. Every enemy takes forever to kill, and you have no manner of health display whatsoever. The bosses are all just boring pieces of Freddy on a chain. The scenes where "Freddy's coming" are terrible, you basically just try to jump over his head and hit him when his back is turned, and repeat this over and over and over. There's nothing here to make me WANT to play this again and again, the only reason I did as a child is because this was one of my few games.
Story: PPPPFFFT. There is no story, no direction, nothing. You just run to the right, jump over enemies and wait for Freddy to come lay the smack down on you.
Depth: While the levels kind of change, they are still the same thing over and over. Jump over spiders, jump on a platform, throw knives at a skeleton because your fist does absolutely nothing.
Difficulty: Oh god. This game is very unforgiving. You WILL die constantly, you will not know when the next hit is going to kill you, and you'll have loads of moments where your punch hits the enemy and does nothing, or your knives, or you wont jump when you press the button. Those are SOME of the bugs in the game, which although they are bugs, contribute greatly to the difficulty.
Overall: Well the average from those scores is about 3.8, but honestly this game is a 1/10. It has nothing to keep you interested, nothing to bring you back, and its full of infuriating bugs and boring monsters.

LJN doesn't always make bad games   NovemberJoy
Quite a few people watched A Nightmare on Elm Street, and liked it. How else did it spawn so many sequels? But, then somebody tried to make a game out of the movie, and people scratched their heads in confusion about how they could make ANOES into a video game. Then they saw the LJN logo, and knew that they wouldn't do it properly. But, did they know for sure? Let's see...
The graphics don't look too bad for an NES game, and the animations are definitely smooth enough. There really isn't much more to say...
For whatever reason, I really like the music in this game, though others don't. The sound effects aren't bad, either.
The gameplay basically revolves around going into houses and collecting bones so that you can burn them in a furnace, which is about as good as you can get with a game like this and keep it uncensored by Nintendo. However, the big thing is that this gets really, really repetitive quickly. If you actually went to the trouble to finish the game, you'd probably never want to see another bone again in your life! Also, I have a good question:Why does Freddy have so many bones? Seriously, you'd think he's some kind of monster made up of bones with just how many there are! And they all look exactly the same...
But, the biggest feature here is multiplayer. To be specific, four-player multiplayer. There's only a handful of NES games that work with the NES Four Score(the four player adapter for the NES), yet an LJN game is one of them. And, of course, it's a much better game if you have people to play with...
One of the biggest problems facing newer players is "WHERE DO I GO?!", and it's actually justified in this case. The first three houses you're supposed to go into are completely random, though they are selected from the three houses at the beginning of Elm Street. Also, the game doesn't give you a clue as to which house to go into, which can be quite confusing, given that you can only enter them in a certain order - no sequence breaking here.
Once you go inside a house, you end up having to collect bones. When you collect enough bones, you can move on - otherwise, you'll be unable to go any further. And, at the end, a boss is waiting for you. Let's hope you collected those Dream Tokens to be able to use special abilities and weapons, or you're screwed...
Probably the best aspect of the game is the multiplayer. It's a fun experience, but, of course, it's not perfect. For one thing, players can't share Dream Tokens - this comes into play when you have some guy hogging all the Dream Tokens from the other players, and then he dies in the middle of a bossfight and the remaining players are left to try to defeat the boss with their bare fists.
Also, players can not be scrolled off the screen, which means that if there's one unresponsive player, nobody can move forwards. Also, if one player lags behind, the others are subject to being blindsided by obstacles, and you need to conserve as much health as possible.
When you defeat a boss, you get a key, which gives the person who collects it an extra life. In multiplayer, you may have to put some thought into who has less lives, and should get the key. This is important, because each player only has three continues to use, then they're dead.
As for the collision detection, it doesn't seem to have any problems. The controls don't have any real problems either, at least not to my knowledge. The most annoying thing about them is that you fly back every time you get hit, which can cause you to fall into a pit.
This game has quite the innovative concept, this concept being its awake/asleep system. Since it's the middle of the night, your characters are sleep-deprived, and therefore will fall asleep given enough time. It depletes by itself, depletes faster when you're standing still, and usually depletes by an entire bar when you get hit, despite the logic that the pain should wake you up a bit.
When you fall asleep, you enter the dream world, where enemies are stronger, and Dream Tokens may be utilized. Of course, there's a catch. After a certain length of time, the Freddy Song will start playing, and when it finishes, Freddy attacks out of nowhere. This creates a dilemma - do you want to stay awake, where it's safer, or do you want to be asleep, with actual weapons and slightly stronger enemies, with the added risk of having to hurry to avoid Freddy? Really, this is actually a pretty cool concept, I just wish it could've been put into a game where you do more than just collect bones...
One of the biggest problems with the sleep meter is:Where's the health bar? You can take about four hits before dying, but where's some kind of marker to signal how many times you have left that you can get hit? It shouldn't be hard to understand - if the gigantic "A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET" logo wasn't there, it wouldn't be hard to fit a health bar on the HUD.
In conclusion, this game isn't bad - it's actually one of the best, if not the best, LJN game that I've seen. It just suffers from a few problems - repetition among others. I'd really like to see somebody remake this game, and make a better version of it, one where you do more than collect bones...
Pros
+Nice music
+Decent graphics
+Innovative "awake/asleep" system
+Four-player multiplayer
+Spot-on collision detection and controls
Cons
-Problems with multiplayer
-Extremely repetitive gameplay
Final Rating:B+(It just needs a bit more polish, and then it'd be a classic)
Final Comments:I did this review mostly from the mutiplayer experience I had with it, and I think it turned out pretty well - at least, it was detailed and informative. While I'm not the person to do it, if somebody's interested, it'd be great if somebody did a remake of this game, or at least used the excellent "awake/asleep" system from it in a game they may be developing...

Nice Graphics!   DannyMyers1978
This is a great game and have really movies against the one that is based on which is like the 4th movie.
The graphics are nice, the sound and music is kinds good and better than the Friday The 13th game made by the same company that made Nightmare On Elm Street for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
The addictiveness is kind great if you play this a lot, like really a lot. The story is really fascinating and better than the Friday The 13th's game story.
The depth is kind great because you can get points as score just like other video games but however Friday The 13th doesn't have any points as score because I think LJN put no scoreboard on the menu. Also by the way, Halloween for the Atari 2600 has a scoreboard which meant that another horror movie but not for the Nintendo Entertainment System put points as score.

A Nightmare On Elm Street   ZacharyPiskura
The Nightmare On Elm Street movies are one of my favorite horror movie franchises, and the game is a well created game of these movies. This game has a lot of story and depth into it, you basically are collecting all of Freddy Kruger's bones to destroy him once and for all, so this game  is obviously based on Dream Warriors. This game is not very addictive as other games are. The sound is a decent tune and when Freddy is nearing you it plays the "1, 2, Freddy's coming for you" song, and finally the Freddy fight music is fast paced and, well 8-bit. Graphics in this game are exceptional for NES an NES game. The difficulty in this game is quite high due to the starting over from the beginning rule. This game is very decent and I think you would enjoy trying it out. One more thing I forgot to add is to look at for hidden "dream cards"- they help you gain more characters in the dream world, and wake yourself up with radios before Freddy gets you!

A Nightmare On Elm Street Box Description

Something frightening has been happening on Elm Street lately. It seems that with each waking day another grussome discovery is made... another neighborhood teen has mysteriously passed away into the dark stillness of the night. Everyone says it's "natural causes," but it seems as if something (or someone) has been picking them off one by one in their sleep. It's a horrible nightmare come true... and this nightmare has a name: Freddy Krueger.
It's up to you and your remaining friends to search Elm Street for his bones, which have been scattered about then collect and burn them in the High School furnace. If you can just stay awake long enough, you might be able to end Freddy's reign of terror for good. You had better hurry though, it's getting late and you can feel your eyelids getting heavier and heavier by the minute.
