The Legend of Dragoon PS1 Review
Hi guys I'm going to do a review on this PS1 hidden gem game! :)
Story 9 out of 10: The story begins when you meet the main character called Dart. He is seen heading back home from a five year long journey to pursue a black monster who killed his parents, and destroyed his birth city called Neet. It was a sad thing since in the cut scene his father, mother and him managed to escape. The father went back to go and help anyone else who many seem to be alive. While the mother did the same. Leaving poor little dart on his own. So on the way back he is attacked by some sort of looking dragon being controlled by some people called Sandora a rebel in a civil war. Dart is saved by a mysterious female named Rose although soon they part ways. When he arrives at his hometown which is called Seles he discovers that it has been destroyed by Sandora. That a young lady who's name is Shana is also another main character and Dart’s childhood friend has been kidnapped taken away. Enraged of what has happened to Seles Dart sets out to rescue her on his own.
Graphics 7 out of 10: The graphics actually really reminds me of one game Final Fantasy 7, as soon as I saw I felt this was another final fantasy 7 game in a way, but very much different. I found it really uncanny how I got that at the first sight while playing the game. It also has some graphics from ff8 as well. How? If you have played those two games you would know instantly from seeing the differences.
Sound 7 out of 10: Here is a funny thing. People talk in this game like really, the main characters and most people. But, it won't always happen the talking will only come if an important drama cut scene was to happen. Also you get to hear in wild battle of how they attack too. I was shocked since I was pretty much sure that the game wasn't going to have people talking in it. Now for the soundtracks the game has a really, really amazing soundtracks if I was to compare it with the greats? It would me among the popular FF games such as FF7, FF8 and FF9. In the game which I find pretty rare it has 2 battle system music which was weird at first to hear. Since I am used to 1 battle music from an RPG game so that’s a slight twist there.
Addictiveness 9 out of 10: Its really addicting, it is. When I first played the game I couldn't stop to the point I didn't want to let go of the game when it came to bedtime. I loved how the story plot already drew me in as for the battles as well. I was like this game is just like FF7 if anything I would be playing this most of the time, and maybe repeat it as well. When I play The Legend of dragoon I have a lot, a lot of fun and I find it really enjoyable to play. Its not often I get addicted to something as that.
Difficulty 6 out of 10: The game starts off pretty easy in the beginning, and then gets harder as you push on further into the story mode. Boy, like the 3rd boss I think of the game was annoying. I almost got killed Dart was on 5hp I think so I got lucky. If you have played Final fantasy games then you would know what to expect from this games diffecuklty, that’s the best way I can explain it.
Depth 8 out of 10: The Legend of Dragoon has a different kind of gameplay that I have never experienced with other RPG games, and here is why. When you go and use the attack option from the battle menu. There will be blue squares which will appear on the screen one in the center, and one on the outer edge. The outer square will begin to shrink, and when it overlaps the inner part of the square you will need to press the x button quickly. With this battle system if you want an easier note its about the timing of the attack. Its all about the timing. If you get the timing right you will end up doing more serious damage to the enemy. For the main characters you will receive more upgraded attacks over the course of the game when you have leveled up enough. Since the old ones may not be able to do more of the damage. Not unless you level up that attack more for it to be powerful to deal attacks on foes.
However. The longer attacks you will get, will allow enemies have the opportunity to counter attack back on you. How will you know when this happens? It will show red, and when they do you will need to press the circle button at the right time to block any of their attacks. Its quite a little confusing to explain something that is a bit complex. If you was to play the game yourself you will see what I am trying to explain. The more you play the more you get used to the battle system.
Overall 9.3: I think its a real gem. Its really sad not a lot of people knew about this game. At the time the FF games on the PS1 got more attention so this game became like a hidden gem not to be known by a lot of people, but by some. The Legend Of Dragoon wasn't popular as FF PS1 games in its days. It is really worth playing I tell you, and the game wouldn't be a waste of your time.
Thank you for taking the time to read my review I hoped you enjoyed it and maybe caught a sudden interest for you to go and try out the game. I will be back with another review really soon. ^-^

The Legend Lives Forever: A Review of "The Legend of Dragoon"   Zurenriri
The Legend of Dragoon is a game released in 2000 by Sony Computer Entertainment, for their own system, the Sony Playstation. Released late into the Playstation's life, it was considered at the time to be SCE's grand masterpiece for the system, and was directed by Shuhei Yoshida, who is now president of Sony Worldwide Studios. This game was supposed to be the one that took down Final Fantasy 7, regarded by many to be the greatest RPG on the Playstation and the game that made RPGs mainstream in the west, regarded by some as the greatest RPG of all time, and regarded by few as even the greatest game of all time. Although The Legend of Dragoon had high ambitions and a lot of potential, it was not able to meet its goals or break the records that FF7 set, selling only 280,000 copies in Japan, and just under a million in North America. Let's take a look at the less-than-popular game that would have been, and maybe should have been, one of the best RPGs of its era.
> Graphics <
The game makes use of a few FMVs throughout the story, the first one taking place right after you select 'New Game'. It shows the town of Seles, the home of the main character, Dart, being destroyed by an invading force. The graphics shown here are of fairly high quality, but the graphics of the first few scenes in the game, including the town of Seles, might not keep a person interested if less-than-stellar graphics were a deal breaker. Of course, any RPG gamer knows that it's not about the graphics, and while the renders themselves are pretty rough, the art is great. Sony obviously had a lot in mind, but the technical limitations of the Playstation didn't allow them to render every single scene of the deep setting that is described on the back of the game's case. Often times you will see any moving objects drawn rather poorly, but the backgrounds will be of excellent quality.
> Sound <
This could also be one of the reasons that The Legend of Dragoon did not soar in as many ways as it could have. The soundtrack for the opening FMV is touching and gets you interested, and the music in most of the towns and areas seems fitting and captivating, but what really holds the game back in terms of sound is the music that they used for the battles. Compared to other RPG games I've played where I'm pumped for a battle as soon as the first few chords are played, The Legend of Dragoon has a weak soundtrack for battles that doesn't get me very pumped at all. Additionally, where other games have different theme songs for each boss battle, The Legend of Dragoon has only three songs that you will hear in combat: one battle song, one boss battle song, and one final song that you will not hear until you are fighting the game's final boss. They really could have stepped it up in terms of quality and variety in this category. The game does make up for it a little bit with the final song you hear at the credits, which put my heart in my chest and really wrapped up the entire story for me in that single song.
> Addictiveness <
A fan of RPGs will want to come back and play this game again and again. I've personally played through it four times, even though I don't typically replay games. The storyline for the game is very linear, as were many RPGs of that era, but there are all kinds of little secrets that you can come back and find later. Perhaps the most challenging is finding all 50 pieces of Stardust, allowing you to fight a "hidden" boss on the fourth disc, before you take on the final boss of the game. Another thing that will keep people coming back is the additions system. It takes a long time, but unlocking the final additions (the ultimate attacks) for each of the seven playable characters (with the exception of Shana who cannot use additions) is very rewarding, almost as rewarding as pulling off the final additions themselves for the first time. This game would be a good candidate for a speed run, since it's fairly easy to remember most of everything that you need to do from start to finish, after a couple of playthroughs.
> Story <
I'm not lying at all when I say that the story for this game unfolds like an epic novel. Starting with only Dart, you learn his story, followed by bits and pieces of the stories of each character you come across as the game progresses. Moments of laughter, sadness, anger, revenge, gratitude, friendship, love, loss, and many other feelings stretch throughout this game and your emotions will change with each task that you complete in this game. Revealing the specifics here would be detrimental to the reader's experience if they haven't played the game, but what I can say is that there are some moments in the game where you can figure out the clues and know what's going to happen, and others where the game will take you completely by surprise and leave you gasping. The only thing that keeps me from rating the story a perfect 10 is the translation from Japanese to English, which at some times can be a bit on the weaker side.
> Depth <
The game is described as having 80 hours of gameplay; my most recent playthrough clocked in at 53 hours, and I prefer to take things pretty slowly. But I would suppose that if you were trying to go for a 100%, or playing with no help from a strategy guide, then the game could take 80 hours, maybe even longer depending on your familiarity for RPG games. A rushed play could probably be done in 30 to 35 hours. But in terms of how deep the game will take you, that is up to the player, but for me, it was not something that could be easily forgotten. I'd be able to rate it higher if there were a few more side quests available, and more difficulty and diversity in the items and equipment that you could find.
> Difficulty <
The game itself is not very hard. Most of the best equipment is practically given to you, and you don't really need to guess on where to go next to continue the story, nearly everything is spelled out for you in black and white. But the reason I rated the difficulty fairly high is because of the battle system, one that drew great praise from some for being so innovative, and great complaints from others who felt that it was too hard to land attacks. I'm talking about the addition system, which involves having very precise timing to land each attack. The beginning attacks only require you to hit the X button once or twice, but as the game progresses on, you unlock more additions that get harder and harder to pull off. Some of them have awkward timing, others, like Dart's Burning Rush attack, require you to be very quick. Each of the final additions require 7 presses of the X button. To throw in a twist, some attacks can be countered at certain intervals with a sudden flash requiring you to press the Circle button. Failing to hit each of the presses with the right timing will result in poor damage, and long, grueling battles. Also, you can't rely on the weaker attacks that require less X presses, especially in the third and fourth discs that have some particularly nasty bosses, because you won't be doing enough damage to survive. One other thing that makes this game difficult is that you can only carry a maximum of 32 items at one time. Stackable items count towards this as well, for example, having 3 Healing Potions counts as 3 items. Throw that in with attack items and all the different healing items, plus the permanent items that you'll discover, and you'll find that your inventory is going to be full throughout most of the game. This is the North American's version of difficulty; I haven't personally played the Japanese version but I've been told that it's even harder.
> Overall <
I've tried my best not to be biased, since some people on this forum already know that The Legend of Dragoon is my all-time favorite video game. I've tried to be fair and point out its flaws as well as its strengths. What draws me the most to a good RPG is the storyline, and this game nails it with that. The game has a unique battle system unlike anything else for its time, and although it leaves things to be desired in terms of its battle music and sprite graphics, it is by all means a game that any RPG fan and any Playstation fan needs to pick up and play if they haven't already. For fans of long RPG series, I'm sorry to disappoint, but this is the only one. Plans for a sequel on the PS2 were announced shortly after the game was released, but it never game to fruition, and Sony formally abandoned the project in 2003, citing that their resources were occupied by other Playstation 2 projects, and that Japanese sales for The Legend of Dragoon were not strong enough to justify a sequel.
> Pros <
+ A completely engrossing story
+ A unique and challenging battle system
+ A long gameplay experience
> Cons <
- Battle audio doesn't really get you "in the mood" for a fight, even against bosses
- Some graphic scenes, particularly the sprites, are mediocre
- Linear path of play with very few side missions and few opportunities to customize your experience

Legend of Dragoon=Amazing   MattR
Legend of Dragoon is game that may seem like a been there done that kind of game Legend of Dragoon offers a great in depth story all though it may be hard to understand at times and all though it has been compared to final fantasy there are elements that separate it from final fantasy such as (the pretty obvious) dragoon transformation which every character you control will have their own elemental dragoon spirit.
The graphics all though not the best it can still amaze you at times such as looking at detailed towns and castles and there are various assortments of environments so not one place will look  the same. The game play as previously mentioned before is turn based style with what you would expect attack, magic, potions, defend, and the option to run away. And a new strategic system called addition is added on the game which can be really helpful although it takes time to get used to the addition as it takes great precision to execute additions. Also dragoon spirits allow you to transform into a human dragon hybrid that increases both physical and magical attacks and take note once you turn into a dragoon it wont last all through out the battle as it only is limited to specific number of turns called spirit points but you can increase spirit points as you progress through your battles, and as soon as your party's spirit points reach max a yin yang icon will appear giving you the option to turn all of your current party into a dragoon. As mentioned before every party member has either a elemental or non elemental dragoon spirit and be careful as if you fight a water based enemy and you choose a specific member to turn into a fire based dragoon you will have a slight disadvantage (it really depends on what level your enemy is and what level you are). Also there are multiple use items that either provide defense for a specific member for a number of turns or makes an enemy confused and attack their own ally and another item that guarantees you escape you escape from battle. Aside from battle game play you are allowed to go from town to town or through open environments  through that is called the field map there is also the world map where you travel from region to the next through a dotted line and there is also the option to find all fifty star dusts which are magical wishing stones but can be difficult to find. All in all all three maps (battle, field, and world) much detail is put into them whether it would be intense moments of battle turns or detailed environments it isn't hard to tell much work was put into these elements.
The soundtrack is well composed as if you are in either a town, castle, or in a battle the soundtrack will the set the right tone and is truly unforgettable especially the serene and beautiful songs put into sections of the game. Although there isn't much voice acting the cut scenes that offer voice acting is not all that great as you would imagine but that's just a nitpick. Sound effects when on battle is pretty amazing when chaining together additions you hear every grunt your party member makes and weapon effects as well when using magical attacks sound effects come off beautifully same goes for potions and multiple use items.
Story wise Legend of Dragoon's story is well written although the plot can be confusing at times. The setting of the game takes place in a fictional continent of Endiness with a series of diverse regions. The main character of the game is Dart and you will guide him throughout the game meeting a slew of characters that will join you each with their own set of attacks and additions. The story will make you travel from one region to the next through the vast continent of Endiness and each region is big and detailed in which you progress through the story and trust me the story is completely unpredictable.
Although there are some negatives in the game Legend of Dragoon is still as every bit as good as it was when it was first released and if you're a fan of rpg games or just interested in games for rich story lines i highly recommend this game

One of The Best PS1 Games I've Played   jerry.ferguson
Ok so this is my second review I have ever done so there will probably be errors and not that good at explaining the game detail so feel free to give me tips on making my next review better.  I may be bad at this stuff but I love doing it and will work to do a better job next time.  Be honest and a little blunt to show how bad or off I am.
Hello all and welcome to The Legend of Dragoon.  To me, this is probably one of the best PlayStation one games I have ever played since I was little.  Sadly though I can put my full thoughts out cuz I just started disc 2 but will do my best.
Graphics:7/10
For a PlayStation one game the graphics are pretty great.  I love the detail they put into the buildings and the background.  Not too bright colors and at the same time not too dark.  The way they drew the characters is nice and not too bad of detail.  The way they drew the characters face, body, weapons, and armor shows that they put effort in making the game good.  You can see the players facial expressions(maybe not all the time but I see it.  Each town you go to has a completely different look than the last making each one unique also making the one playing the game feel I guess the word would be interested in searching the towns and exploring every building they come across.  The creatures were each unique in their own way.  I have played many games on the PS1 and the enemies on here were drawn pretty well.  Each had their own attacks, colors, shapes.  Each enemy I saw and defeated just made me want to see what the other one looked like.
Sound:3/10

Not much I can think to put here.  The music while you were on the world map was I guess soothingish is the right non-word to use for me.  It kinda gave me the feel that I was doing ok but at the same time it has that tune where I felt like I should be ready for a random battle to pop up.  The battle music was kinda odd though.  Every time I heard it I felt like I was in a cave and the party was in the back.  It just didn't sound like I was fighting.  It was really annoying hearing Double Slash every time I did the attack sequences perfectly which was about 9 out of the 10 times.  They shouldn't have put that in there.  I did like the boss battle music though.
Addictiveness:10/10

This game is very addictive.  From the beginning of the game to the end of it I didn't want to stop.  Each battle I fought I wanted to do another one.  Each town I visited I wanted to explore and seen another.  Each area I went to looked different than the last and more and more exciting to see.  Mostly all I wanted to do is explore and just beat the crap out of any enemy that got in my way.  The only other games I got this excited about was Final Fantasy 7 and 9.  The graphics, fights, cutscenes, areas, and even the attacks wanted me to continue on.  I wanted to see what the next attack I get would be like.
Story:8/10

The story so far has been pretty good and unexpected at the same time.  You start out running through what I think is a forest and you are about to fight some guys and then get attacked by a dragon.  Just like books the introduction needs to pull you in and that right there got me wanting to play more.  After a girl saves you from the dragon you go to the village Seles.  Have been destroyed by soldiers and after defeating them you find out that Shana was taken by them.  After that the story just gets better and better.  There are so many twists and turns that I felt like I was on a roller coaster.  The only thing I thought that sucked so far is that it likes getting me excited and sad all within a few minutes.  But that is what makes a game great am I right?
Depth:8/10
The gameplay is like a lot of other turn based rpg games.  You can change gear, learn new attacks, fight odd looking creatures, and explore multiple areas.  I don't know how to explain exactly what it is like so will just stop here.
Difficulty:5/10
The difficulty I would say is about moderate.  If you know what you are doing or have played games like this one before you won't have too much trouble defeating enemies and getting through the game.  The boss battles are pretty easy at first but seem to get harder as you play.  Basically as long as you keep updating your equipment and keep some potions handy you should be ok but should still be careful.

Its in the playstation store :D   imundead2
Overall:  9.5
I played this game way back in the day, when the PlayStation was in its twilight years and I was still a kid of 14 years or so and this game was amazing for its time and for my age.  I remember quite a bit of the game from when I was a kid, so much in fact that when I bought this game from the PlayStation store on my ps3 I beat the first disc in about 12 hours which is kinda quick considering I put over 90 hours into that game when it was on the PlayStation.
Graphics: 5.0
The graphics have not aged gracefully, with glitches of people fading through walls, and the fixed camera angels.  the only real redemption where the cut scenes, for me they where the first of their kind, the first cut scenes that I had seen that where not cartoony or just words with background images.
Sound: 9.0
The sound is great, most of the music is well done and sounds really good helping you get more immersed in the game, and the voice overs where pretty good too, the small amount that where in the game.
Addictiveness: 10.0
There is nothing about this game that will make you want to play it over and over again unless you are like me and enjoy the story and the old style game play.  Believe you me, there are no alternate endings, there is no real side quest that is worth going back for, and the game plays the same whom ever you have on your team.
Story: 9.0
This story is expansive, like I said before I spent over 90 hours playing this game my first time through, it is entertaining and strong enough to keep a 14 year old caught up in it for a good chunk of his summer.  It had a few low points that made me almost cry and a bunch of high points that made me shout for joy, I really got behind the main character in this game and hated the bad guys.
Depth: 10.0
As I keep saying it took over 90 hours to complete the game and even when I bought it from the PlayStation store it has taken a good chunk of time to get even half way through the game.  Legend of Dragoon has enough twists and turns to make it enthralling enough to keep you playing long after even some of the newer games have lost my attention.
Difficulty: 8.0
It all depends on how you like to play these games, I personally like to train my characters up to above the average on the first few levels when the monsters are weak and easy to kill so that I can be a few levels up on the bosses, but even then I found a few places that took quite a lot of work to get through, especially at the end when the characters split up and each has to go through an ordeal and I hadn't trained a couple of them well enough to get through easily...
Overall this game is worth your time if you have enough to give to it, I will most definitely enjoy it now that it is on the PlayStation store cheep.

The Legend Of Dragoon   RetroidGameoid
Ah, the Playstation era, a time when RPGs were going over the top and doing everything possible to best one another. While many of these failed to stand it, one specific RPG made a name for itself (although only shortly lived). The second game I ever played and actually beaten (besides Final Fantasy VII),  The Legend Of Dragoon was truly a remarkable piece of work. With a wide range of characters, an intense storyline, and an obnoxiously large amount of available items (including armor, weapons, and accessories), LOD seemed to be the next in line for being extended out. However, it died off and fell into the shadows. But still, those who have played it and still play it, will never forget the hours spent, the story told, and the hearts captured.
Our story begins with a young fellow named Dart, whom had a VERY close childhood friend named Shana (oddly enough, this reminds me of Tifa and Cloud from FFVII). As the story goes on, we find out that Shana is very special and... ohh, my apologies, I was about to spoil the game for you.
Well, anyways, this is one of the very few games that I have actually beaten (without cheating) and truly a game that I will never forget. This game (like Final Fantasy VII) holds a very special place in my heart. I honestly can say if any game deserves a prequel or sequel, this would be that game. I mean honestly, this game deserves more credit and more hype than what it has been given. Out of all the games I have played (besides Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, and the Kingdom Hearts series), this one was and still is worth every second spent to beat it thoroughly.
If there is a game that you should play, this would have to be it. With beautiful graphics, interesting story, amazing soundtrack, and an even more amazing cast of characters, this game honestly needs a revival or comeback.

While the game is loading for the first time, don't do anything else, if you try to do other things, it stalls, let it finish.
