The New Super Mario Bros   GenesisJunkie
(Overall) We are going to be talking about the New Super Mario Bros. This is a released on the Nintendo DS in 2006. The New Super Mario Bros has the feel of some of the classic Mario games.
The map really reminds me of Super Mario Bros 3 and some of the levels remind me of Super Mario Bros (the first one).
The main reason I really enjoyed this game is because of the fact that it was made in the same style as the best Mario games ever made.It is side-scrolling platforming at its best for the DS.
There are some cool new power ups in the New Super Mario Bros. There is a giant mushroom, it makes you grow huge and smash any thing in your path! It is pretty much the regular mushroom just on steroids (and with out all the nasty side effects!). There is also a blue shell. What does the blue shell do? It basically turns you into a blue Koopa Troopa with Mario's head poking out. You can duck down into your shell and enemies can hurt you.
The controls are pretty simple in the game. You will only need to use two face buttons, one to run or use fire ball (if you have fire flower power up), and one to jump. You can also do a Ninja Gaiden style wall jump in this game!
You can play as Luigi in the New Super Mario Bros. I don't think it changes the story or game play at all.
New Super Mario Bros has some new enemies and the old enemies that you know and "love". Some enemies you may see in this game are  Amp, Ball 'n' Chain, Balloon Boo, Bob-omb, Koopa Troopa, Fire Chomp, Super Dry Bones, and many, many more.
There are some mini games in New Super Mario Bros, some that include Action- Snowball Slalom, Run, Bob-omb! Run!. Puzzle- Wanted!, Hide and Boo seek, and Loves me.....?. Table- Speed, Memory match, and Picture poker. 1 on 1- Jumping Brothers, Bob-omb sudden death, and Vs. Pair-a-gone. There are many more mini games to be played!
You can collect big gold star coins in levels (three per level). You need five of these coins to get into the mushroom houses. You can get 1ups or power ups in the mushroom houses, you can also save after spending the five coins, I have done this alot just because I need to save.
If you are already powered up (with fire flower or blue shell ect) and you get another power up you can use it later on when you need it. This comes in handy! Lose your fire power? Well you have another so its all good!
This game is what all new/newer games should strive to be. A foot in the past but moving toward the future. I give the Overall an 8. A very good score for a new game.
(Graphics) The Graphics are very nice. Each level looks totally different from the last and from the next. You can tell that there was alot of work put into the graphics and level design of the New Super Mario Bros.
Your enemies look crisper and realer then ever but that's to be expected from a newer game. Mario looks great, Bowser looks ferocious, and the worlds around you look oh so real.
I still and will always love the look of a classic game better (8-16 bit) but I have to say I like the way this game looks.
I will give the graphics an 8. I like the graphics but I have seen better on the DS. they look great, very easy on the eyes but there is still room for improvement.
(Sound) For me this is where the New Super Mario Bros really shine. I love the music, and I love the sound effects!
The music as a classic feel with a new crisper sound. Alot of the songs remind me of songs from Super Mario Bros 3, which is a great thing. I loved Super Mario Bros 3, it was one of my favorite NES games as a kid and still is. I have so much love for the music in that game, so listening to the music in this game brings back so many good feelings!
Each level seems to have a sound track that fits the level perfectly. I give the sound a perfect 10! Nostalgia is the driving force for giving it such a high score. I have not really found that many new games that bring back those good feelings so when I find one that does it really leaves an impact on me.
(Addictiveness) The New Super Mario Bros is pretty dang addictive! It is really fun and easy to pick up and play. Once you start playing it you really don't want to stop.
For me the New Super Mario Bros is just as addictive as the original Super Mario Bros, and that's really saying something! I normally hate new games so if I am saying its as good and addictive as a classic game then this game must be good!
There are alot of chances to save in this game, like after beating a castle or spending star coins. Being able to save and pick up right where you left off (and not having to play the same ol levels over and over) really bumps up the addictiveness.
This is a fun game that any Mario fan will want to keep on playing. Addictiveness will get a nice shinny 9! That being said, for me it has a high addictiveness to it but very little replay value. Fans of newer games will probably want to play it over and over though.
(Story) Ok, its a Mario game so I am pretty sure you can guess the story! The only thing that is different in the story of this game then other Mario games is that you kill Bowser in the first level and Bowser Jr. kidnaps Peach.
I am not going to go into the story anymore then that. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone. I give the story a 5. Same ol story, another new game.
(Depth) This game is not very long at all. New Super Mario Bros has all of 8 levels. It has a map just like the one in Super Mario Bros 3, a bunch of levels to play within the level. You can skip over alot of them to get to the castle just by getting star coins in the levels you do play and spend them to open up a new path.
I skipped over two worlds/levels (what ever you want to call them) not even meaning to. I am sure if you knew what you where doing you could skip more.
I know this is on a handheld console but most of the games on the DS are much longer then the New Super Mario Bros. I give depth a 4.
(Difficulty) Ok, anyone that knows me knows how much I complain about how all new games are way to easy. "Oh you beat Oblivion? well who cares! Who couldn't beat Oblivion!" Well this game proved me wrong. New Super Mario Bros is pretty dang hard! In no way is it as hard as some of those classic games that made us the angry adults we are today, but its still kinda hard.
All the challenge in this game is fair. No cheap shots. Each level gets a little harder then the one that came before it.
The New Super Mario Bros game gives out 1ups like candy on Halloween, and its a good thing! You really shouldn't run out of lives, but the game is a challenge at times.
I give difficulty and 8. I didn't have that hard of a time beating it but compared to the other games I have played for the DS and other new/newer console this game is hard. If it was on a system like the NES or Super Nintendo I would only give it  a 6 at most.
(End) Anyone that has a DS should really get this game! It has a classic feel and a new look. This is one of the best new games I have ever played. Good job Nintendo for keeping Mario great!

New Super Mario Bros. is a new element in the series   IgorBird122
Here's another review by IB122 and this time, it's on New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS. This have went back to the old side-scrolling days, but with a modern 3D twist. This game was released in 2006, and with the newer progresses coming out with the 7th generations, they want this game to blossom to the modern look, so that's why we got New Super Mario Bros, and this game is the 2nd Mario game that has entered the Nintendo DS (after Super Mario 64 DS)
The Graphics:
The Graphics in the the game is pretty amazing for the handheld game. By looking at the graphics when I'm playing this game, it looks like the character spites are a little more detailed and more clearer, and it's not just with the character spites what I really like about this game's graphics, it's also the environment you're playing in each of the world, personally with each of the different worlds I play in which really makes this game stand out, by looking at how the background is designed, it's just amazing, it gives it a farther point of view than you seen with previous side-scrolling Mario games, and this is the main graphics that really set in the future New Super Mario Bros. games in the future, so all and all, the graphics in the game came out really fantastic, the only downside I have to say with the graphics, some are a little bit off, but it's so little, it's barely noticeable.
With all the great graphics, I give this a 9 out of 10
----
The Sound/Music:
The sound effects in the game is pretty outstanding, the reason why I say it is it's because they brought the classic sounds we hear from the classic Mario games on NES/SNES but those sounds are much clearer than ever in this game, and also in this game is where I hear Mario's voice, but not a whole lot though, mostly whenever you beat the level and in the level select is where you'll mostly hear Mario's voice, although you'll still hear him here and there as well
As for the Music, I think it's a really fantastic job, the reason why, they brought a lot of music we're familiar with in Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3, and sound with a modern remix with them to make it sound so much nicer in each level, and not just bring back old music from the past, but also adding in newer tunes for the game as well.
On how much I think the Sound and Music came onto this game, I'll give this a 9 out of 10
----
The Addiction Level:
The game can be pretty addicting if you put it to a certain extent, to me, I think this game is quite addicting, because hey, it's Super Mario and I think Mario games are pretty addicting, for this game in general, I personally think it'll be played by a whole lot of people that has a Nintendo DS with them and if they do, this will be the game those people will more likely have for their handheld. For my opinion why I think this game is pretty addicting to my own words, it's both the main game with all the things to do like becoming Mega Mario and just smash though everything, or it can also be the mini-games, with all you can try out, it's really wants someone to play this game over and over again.
I would personally give the addiction level a 9 out of 10
----
The Story:
The story in the game is the same old same old, Bowser happens to kidnapped Princess Peach, but what makes this different than other Mario games, in the beginning, both Mario and Peach is walking around in the Mushroom Kingdom and all of a sudden, Lakithunder shows up above the castle and start destroying it and Mario sees the castle, so he went over to see what's going on and all of a sudden behind Mario's back, Bowser Jr. went and grabs Peach and drags her all the way to Bowser's castle and on the way, they all stop and the world's towers and castles which each one has a unique boss depending on the world you're playing in. and once you get to Bowser's castle, you got to face his obstacles, and have to battle him again and free Peach once again.
With it using pretty much the same story from previous Mario games (but with a unique twist though) I give this an 8 out of 10
----
The Depth:
With the Depth, I do got to say, they really nailed with the Depth, they combined all they did in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World and created this game which to my mind is pretty outstanding move, for the power-ups, se see the return of the Super Mushroom and the Fire Flower, but on top of that, we happen to get a few brand new power-ups like the mini-mushroom where Mario is half the size of the normal small Mario, the Mega mushroom where it makes Mario like 5 time bigger than Super Mario and can just smash things in your way, and a Blue Shell where Mario can now be a koopa. Also, this game has introduced a ton of new enemies into the game as well classic enemies returning once again in a new format. It's also not just the level select, the new power-ups, and new enemies, whenever you get board in the main game, you can play a couple mini-games as well if you feel like playing some by yourself or find a couple friends and connect to each other and play together or you can also play with a friend in the Mario vs. Luigi game as well with all the battles you and your friend can do, the possibility are endless with this game.
I can say, with everything I mentioned above, I surly give this a perfect 10 out of 10
----
The Difficulty:
The difficulty level in New Super Mario Bros. isn't that bad, in fact, it's at a pretty decent difficulty level for a Mario game, although when you're first playing the game, it can be a little tricky, but once you get used to it, it's smooth sailing through the whole game and when you're used to the game, you'll find it pretty easy, and like I mentioned in the Depth, it's not just the main game, but let's also focus on the mini-games, some of those games can be hard, depending on where your last record stand, if you've played the mini-games for a little while, some of your records can be a little difficult to accomplish, but that is pretty typical that the more you play onto the level, the harder it'll become, but other than those I have describe, the difficulty is average for a Mario game.
By scaling up the difficulty levels on both the main game and the mini-games, I happen to give this an 8 out of 10
----
Overall:
Overall with this game, to my opinion, this is one of the great Mario games out there and being the first game in the new side-scrolling game and this game being the benchmark for the future New Super Mario Bros. games in the future like NSMB Wii, U, and 2. By that meaning, this game really revolutionized the whole Mario series, with a 3D format in a side-scroller.
Overall for this game on how it function with the Nintendo DS and with all the categories I mentioned above for this game, I would like to give this game a 9 out of 10 for being one great game (just a few minor things, but still).

The New Super Mario Bros Review   Uzar
New Super Mario Brothers. It was Nintendo's effort to bring Mario back to his side-scrolling roots. And, it spawned its own series, so clearly it was a success! If you ask me it's because you can play as Luigi in singleplayer :P. But let's delve a bit deeper into the first installment shall we?
Graphics: 8
The Nintendo DS tried some different styles over the years. Ranging from beautiful pixelated sprite graphics, looking better than the GBA, believe it or not. And just okay, 3D graphics. New Super Mario Brothers was trying to follow the style of Yoshi's Story, and other games. By being 2.5D. 3D models on a 2D background. It was a 3D Mario, Luigi, Peach, and boss enemies, while most normal enemies are pixelated/sprited. The animations, while repeatitive at times, are pretty smooth.
Sound: 9
This game has great sound! The background music is nice. The sound effects are a nice, somewhat updated, version of the original ones from Super Mario Brothers. The only thing that keeps this from a perfect 10 is, when playing as Mario, I can't really make out what he says at the end of the levels. (Is it supposed to be "That's-a-so nice!"?)
Addictiveness: 10
I'm not ashamed to say I've played this about 10 times all the way through. It's just so fun! Especially if you're lucky enough to find a Blue Shell powerup. Which gives you a Koopa Shell on your back. Or just having a Mini Mushroom, which makes you incredibly miniscule. Just having the right powerup can make the entire game more fun to play.
Story: 6
Well, it's a Mario game. So I'm sure Princess Peach's kidnapping comes as a shock to nobody. But, well, there looks to be another story kind of going on. Because, the first boss is Bowser himself! You beat him the classic way, hitting the button, having him fall into lava. Only to have him....Roar in pain...And you watch the skin melt off of him...And he reaches up one more time before his boney self plunges back into the lava. Not gonna lie, that still creeps me out. But anyway, Bowser Junior keeps running off with the princess. So the story kind of continues.
Depth: 6
Well, there isn't too much depth. There are three hidden star coins in each level. And at times they can be hard to get to. And a few levels have hidden exits. There are ever two hidden WORLDS for you to play through! But, most secrets are given away by the World Map. So things come as less of a surprise.
Difficulty: 7
The game can be pretty tough at times, surprisingly. Especially the last few worlds. The Star Coins take some professional style skills, and timing, and sometimes a obscure powerup, to get. And getting to the previously mentioned secret worlds, requires you to have a mini-mushroom. And the levels you need to beat while tiny are pretty tough. Mainly because you jump high, fall slowly, and you die in one hit. But, it's not that hard to find lives.
I would recommend this to anyone really. Sure it may be hard to find now though. But the other New Super Mario Brothers games are just as great as this one was. :)
