New Super Mario Bros. 2 Review - COINS!!! Lexatom
So, I just recently finished New Super Mario Bros. 2. Just yesterday, in fact. I can't really tell if I really like the game or if I hate it just a little bit. It was released for the 3DS on July 28, 2012. Like I said, I have mixed feelings on this game and I don't quite know where to put them. Hopefully this review of the game will help me figure out where this game stands on my list.
Graphics - 8The graphics in New Super Mario Bros. 2 are very clean. However, there are some instances where I do find Mario or some of his surroundings to look a little blurry. That rarely happens, though. I think my favorite instance of the graphics showing off is the final boss fight. I'm not going to spoil anything too much, but we all already know who the final boss is right? I find his model to be very clean, and there was never an instance of blurriness in my playthrough. I can easily see each individual appendage moving like it's an actual creature, and I love it.
Sound - 7Seven? Seven!? Just hear me out. The music in this game is good, don't get me wrong. However, there's just this one HUGE issue I have with it that probably only bothers me because I'm weird. In every single track I hear, there's always this distinct, annoying xylophone noise that goes with the beat. This wouldn't be such a big problem if it wasn't more distinct than every single other instrument in the track. I hear it everytime and it drives me absolutely crazy. Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about noises. The sound that plays when you stomp on something is as satisfying as ever. I particularly like Bowser's roars in this game. I have no idea why, but they actually scare me a little bit. Something i don't really see in a Mario game.
Addictiveness - 9It's Mario. You're going to play this game again eventually. There's a lot of replay value in Mario games. Once you beat the game, you unlock the Star World. And if you were like me and didn't bother to find any secret exits on a normal playthrough, then you just kept on going ahead and missing the secrets and then finding them after you beat the main game. There are many secret exits to be found, and there are two secret worlds. In addition to that, since this game has a lot to do with coins, there's a secondary mission that aims for you to collect 1,000,000 total coins. That's a lot, and it takes a while. However, you should be able to do it before you complete the game 100%.
Story - 8It's fairly known that Mario games don't have the deepest storyline, and it's no different here. Peach gets kidnapped, you go through many levels, beat the bad guy, rescue the princess, the end. There's really not much more to it than that. Even though I sometimes wish for more of a story, it works for what it is. Mario isn't about deep storylines, and it works with what it is given.
Depth - 8Like I said previously, Mario games have a lot of replay value. Once you beat the main game, you unlock the Star World. You can try to collect a ton of Star Coins. You can find the many secrets this game has contained within the levels. Lots of stuff to do. However, the main game is WAY too short. I find it to be even shorter than the original New Super Mario Bros. on the DS, which is pretty sad. However, the replay value sort of makes up for it, I guess. A part of me wants a longer main game, but because of the replay value, I guess it's alright.
Difficulty - 7Mario games aren't known for being WAY too difficult, and the same applies to this game. I'll be honest, I did die a lot. Not way too much, but enough to get you really angry at the game. Most of my deaths come from World 6, mainly because that's the last world of the main game. The final boss fight took me around 5 tries, since it was surprisingly difficult in a way. But like I said, not difficult to the point of near impossibility.
Overall - 7.9New Super Mario Bros. 2 does have its positives to it. However, there are also a lot of negatives, some of which I don't usually find in a lot of Mario games. I was hoping for a more fun expierence, and while there were some parts that delivered well, there were other parts that just didn't get me invested into the game as much as I had hoped. I wish this review was a bit longer, but there's not really much to talk about with this game. It's another entry into the Mario series that has many mixed opinions, due to a plethora of reasons, but it still manages to be playable. Thank you for taking the time to read this review.

If I see another coin, I'm gonna... mario102
Spoiler alert! This game has spoilers that you might not want to read unless you don't mind.
Coins, coins, coins! Oh, that's all you are going to see in New Super Mario Bros. 2! First, I'll get to each individual section, and then I'll get to some other things to talk about the game, like the whole coins, coins, coins situation.
Graphics - 10/10
So, this game is on the 3DS (exclusive!), so, most likely, you are going to play this game in the 3D mode. However, if you have vision problems or are too young, maybe not so much. Graphics are nice, and it has a 2 and a half dimension form. What I mean is that the polygons on screen are not in three dimensions, but are not in two dimensions either. This is very hard to explain in my own terms, so here's a Wikipedia article to read more. Anyways, as most 3DS games, the graphics will be doubled if you look at it at the wrong angle. But, when everything is made sure to be perfect, the graphics are sweet!
Sound - 9/10
The soundtrack was composed by Kenta Nagata, a composer who's previously worked on the Mario Kart series. The music is nice, but mostly reminds me of the music from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which I might not be surprised of at all. However, the upbeat music in the overworld and darker music in, let's say the castles, are sure to set the mood for that level or stage.
Addictiveness - 8/10
Now, you start playing. You see everything that New Super Mario Bros. 2 has to offer, and you are amazed. You are glued to the 3DS for weeks, and can't stop playing. But then you stop playing. You aren't so hooked to the game. Then, after a break of maybe a week or two, you go back to playing. Eventually, you beat the game, and then just end there. There's nothing more to do, except play Coin Rush or go back to levels that you might have missed. That, my friends, is basically the scenario that takes place when you play this game. It becomes less addictive over time, which is why I gave this category an 8.
Story - 6/10
Oh, as any other Super Mario game, here comes the plot:
Mario and Luigi have to go save Princess Peach from the Koopalings and the evil Bowser! The brothers have to work together to defeat countless enemies, to save Mario's one true love. PLOT TWIST! You become very greedy and you have to pick up almost every coin you see for some reason! So, while trying to go find your true love, you end up collecting a million coins along the way (and one is supposedly $508,829.16, so I might not be saving the princess this time around) just for fun!
So, this same old recycled plot once gets used again in New Super Mario Bros. 2.
Depth - 9/10
I can tell you this - the game has a lot of levels for such a game like this. Like, maybe 90. It's pretty crazy if you ask me. Anyways, there are a few new items, however, they are based off coin collecting, which is not a surprise. It does take a while to beat, and you have to get a number of Star Coins, coins found in various (usually hidden) areas of the level, to go to a secret world called the Star World (in that world, they've got Moon Coins). So, there's a lot to do to keep you from not playing, but it might not be enough. But Coin Rush can fill in that gap.
Difficulty - 3/10
Like any Super Mario franchise game, this game is pretty easy, so everyone can play the game and pay Nintendo money to do so. Bosses aren't that hard, and enemies like the Goomba just keep getting easier. However, there is a DLC pack in the Coin Rush mode (which costs $2.50 for the single one or $7.50 for the combo pack) which have some pretty intense levels, so I might try those you are an advanced player, unlike me.
Overall - 8.8/10
So, I think that this game is great, and it is what keeps Nintendo relevant, and it is what has kept it relevant since the first Super Mario game back in 1985. What I don't understand is why the game is mainly focused on getting coins while saving the princess. I'll take this conversation over to a video game thread on here and then we can talk about it. Now, if you are a parent looking for a game for his or her child, a grandparent, a child, or just someone who might be interested in getting this game for themselves or for someone else, this is definitely the game to go for.

A Clever Parody of the Mario Series supernerd117

Some may know this game from the million-coin challenge. There was a promise that if you collected 1 million coins throughout your progress in the game, you would be rewarded. And rewarded those that did it were...with a brand spanking new title screen and a message of congratulations. Yup, that’s it. No extra level, no extra character, that’s it.
So yes, your money will perish with you. But the memories you make playing this game fortunately are about more than collecting coins.
If you’ve played New Super Mario Bros. DS or Wii, then you’ll feel at home. The goal is to get to the flagpole at the end, Mario style. X or Y to run and grab objects, B or A to jump. Jumping several times in a row with great timing will allow longer and higher jumps. This can be essential to get a one-up at the flagpole at the end without having the raccoon tail, which makes its return here from Super Mario Bros. 3.
8 worlds make their appearance here, but there isn’t too much substance, despite the liberal scattering of coins throughout the game. It’s pretty much another Super Mario game with a new coat of paint. Whether or not you like this game will almost entirely depend on how you like the color of the game. If you liked New Super Mario Bros., but weren’t very good at it, you’ll almost surely like this. But if you liked New Super Mario Bros. AND were good at it, you might find this game quite disappointing.
The worlds are very similar to those done in the past: greens, desert, island, mountain, clouds, volcano, and secret worlds (mushroom, flower, star). Many elements from previous games make their return (secret flagpoles, star coins, etc.) while others are missing (the only four powerups are fire flower, raccoon leaf, mini mushroom, and gold flower). This last one is a new powerup, and works quite well in some instances. It defeats enemies and gives you a coin value, and can turn some objects into coins. It does not work against most enemy projectiles, though.
Another addition are gold hoops. This will temporarily turn all enemies gold, and is put to use in interesting ways. Boos will flee, leaving behind a trail of coins. Koopa shells, when kicked, will produce coins in its wake and give you coins according to the number of enemies you defeat with it before time runs out. You may set up a trail of enemies for a koopa shell to send them flying and reward you with coins. These moments are among the most enjoyable in the game, and are a delight to pull off.
The final addition are gold bricks, albeit seen before in Super Mario 3D Land. By bashing a certain brick a certain number of times, it will either attach to Mario head or spew out coins, depending on how it was hit. If it attaches to Mario, he will be able to take one hit without taking damage. After a certain number of coins have been gathered, it will disappear and claps can be heard.
But the pace of the game is much slower for this. Time limits even go up to 600 for some levels. One might rightly miss the platforming of previous titles. And only when one’s focus shifts off the coins can one see this game’s flaws. It may even seem lazy. But there is much fun to be had, and the ability of the game to keep track of coin high scores is wonderful.
Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the game is the 3D. One of the 3DS’ strong suits is rendering several frames interposed upon each other in 3D. The effect in this game is marvelous! It is fantastic to see. And the final boss fight of the game may well be the greatest 3D effect ever achieved in a 3DS game.
The music is traditional. For those who have played a Mario game, you will recognize pretty much every tune in the game. It is all done well, but nothing really stands out, like the music of Mario Galaxy did, for example.
There is also a Coin Rush mode. In this mode, you rush quickly to the flagpole while gaining as many coins as possible. It is spread across 3 levels of 3 worlds. Only certain levels appear here, and perhaps as the greatest insult (or funniest joke), Nintendo charges $25 for all the remaining levels ($2.50 per pack).
Overall: Your enjoyment of this game will largely depend on how well you can deal with the coin gathering aspect of the game. You may wish to ignore it. You might want to try to beat a high score. But you cannot remove it. It is highly ingrained in this title. For that reason, I cannot give this game a very high score.
I give it an 8.0.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 Review IgorBird122
Time for a review made by The IB, for the game that I happened to be reviewing is on New Super Mario Bros. 2. This game was released on July 12th, 2012 in North America and it is the 3rd installment in the New Super Mario Bros. series (after 2006’s New Super Mario Bros. and 2009’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii). New Super Mario Bros. 2 follows the similarity from Super Mario Bros. 3 (I wished it was the same exact levels like in Super Mario Bros. 3, but oh well).
Graphics..
The Graphics to my opinion are a more updated version from the last New Super Mario Bros. game that was released back on the DS in 2006, but a whole lot more clearer and more in 3D, although the 3D effects that comes with the 3DS don’t really have much of an impact with the 3D playing in New Super Mario Bros. 2, but if you like to play 3D gaming. The graphics from this game shares the same graphic style that we know back in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and all that is fit into New Super Mario Bros. 2, and I think when I first played this game, it was an outstanding upgrade than the last New Super Mario Bros game that was released on the Nintendo DS, to have these outstanding graphics. I think it is a nice upgrade for the handheld devices. HD graphics on a handheld, this is why I love on how much the Mario series has really went a long way since the series started back in 1985, and nearly 30 year, that is progress right there, and this is why I like video games in general, the ever so changing graphics and everything else.
As for the score for the graphics, I got to give it a perfect 10 out of 10, the reason I gave it this score, it just got so clear and High Def graphics and they have made a few changes from New Super Mario Bros. Wii. The game has great graphics and I think this game and the Wii game has both been benchmarks for future Mario platformer games.
------------
Sound/Music..
For the sound effects, Nintendo brought all the sound effects they had from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, and they have put them into the 3DS handheld and the sound effects still sounds like the same as on the T.V. with no alternatives, and I do like things to be in its original form and that’s what some gamers like, as long it keeps the sound track when they a new game, that’s what makes it get a higher rating, and as long that they didn’t mess up the sounds, and it’s not just they brought from the Wii, but from the first New Super Mario Bros. game on the original DS game, and bringing both sounds are amazing.
As for the Music in the game, it is very similar as with the sound effects, they have made the music that they created for the Wii and put it into the 3DS with no limitation with the music, and going from the console version of the Wii to the handheld version of the 3DS, I think this is what makes the music really great, I think that with the music, I think Nintendo did a great job with the music in the game as well, and like I said with the Wii review I made, it is a really catchy tune and each level has their own music and this is what I like about Mario Music. That’s all I got for the music.
As for the Sound Effects and the Music, I’m going to give it a perfect 10 out of 10, I think with Nintendo bringing everything they made in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and fit it all into the 3DS known as New Super Mario Bros. 2. Trust me, I think you’ll really like the music in this game.
------------
Addiction Level..
I think with the later the New Super Mario Bros. games being released, for some reason, they get a whole lot more addicting and addicting, like with New Super Mario Bros. 2, I think I have been more addicted to this game more than New Super Mario Bros. 1 and Wii. I’m not sure on why it gets so addicting, but it’s at a point, you just don’t want to give up playing this game and this was my favorite game once I got the 3DS until I returned to Pokemon series where I liked Pokemon Y. But it is still up there in the Top 5 favorite game on the 3DS. I think if you do like the Mario series, I think on a personal note, you will be really hooked on this game a whole lot and I don’t think you’ll absolutely give up this game if you’re a serious Mario fan. I think as of modern gaming, this would be the Mario game to play and it’s my most favorite modern Mario game so far right now and everything I mentioned in this review is why it is my most favorite modern Mario game.
As with that speaking, I will give the Addiction Level a perfect 10 out of 10, It’s got a whole lot that will keep you playing on the 3DS. A highly addicting Mario game that will make you play, and I also think with the coin high score toy can get, I think this also adds in the addiction as well.
------------
The Storyline..
The does follow the same classic storyline we all know since 1985, but this time, the storyline follows something similar to how New Super Mario Bros. Wii followed; Bowser has sent 7 of his kids to kidnap Princess Peach. The story starts where Mario and Luigi to go gather a bunch of coins, and after they have completed their coin grapping, and the brothers realized that Peach was missing and then suddenly, the Koopa clown car (yes, the same car from Super Mario World) returns in this game and one of them has reveled that they have yet, again kidnapped Princess Peach and they flee while Mario and Luigi is pursuing them, and thus your adventure begins. You have the traditional 8 worlds, but it follows the same concept from New Super Mario Bros. You can only have to beat 6 of those 8 worlds, where 2 of them are optional, the Mushroom World and the Flower World, but completing both of these worlds will skip World 3 & 4). After you go through 8 Worlds with Bowser and the kids messing around you around with Peach, you have finally reached Bowser’s castle, once you enter, you’ll see both Bowser with Princess Peach in a cage locked up, you first have to go over him and press the button to send him down like in the classic game, and the game is over, right? Wrong, they pull the cage that contains Peach away and the kids all give Bowser a power-up and make him mega and you have to battle him once more and once you beat him once again and it is finally over and you can fly back to the Mushroom Kingdom.
So, for the story, I will give this game a 6 out of 10, nothing really new with the storyline because it’s really the mix of Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, and New Super Mario Bros. Wii. So, yeah, nothing new, Bowser kidnaps Peach and holds her hostage until you travel 8 worlds (6 of 8 worlds in this game) and you have to defeat him twice in order to save Peach once again, for now.
------------
Depth..
Mostly this game focus more on the coins and gold more than anything else in the game (other than the classic Mario storyline), in this game it introduce a new game mode called “Coin Rush” where you collect as many coins as you can within a time limit, and to gain all those coins, all you need to do is to collect the coins like the traditional way plus also defeating gold enemies and/or defeating enemies as Gold Mario, and that’ll end up gaining a bunch more coins in your coin count, plus also collect 10 gold coin and 100 gold coin to also raise your coin count a whole lot more. You also can have a friend no matter if you’re playing with someone in real life on online; you’ll be playing with someone in the Co-op play which playing with someone can be fun. Or you can just simply play the Single Player mode, if you want to go on the adventure to save Peach on your own. So, whatever you choose, I think you will have a whole lot of interesting things in these levels, give it a try and collect all those coins.
For the Depth score, I will give it a perfect 10 out of 10. I think the coins are controlling me with this review, but in this game, you can’t really stop thinking about coins; because this game is all about coins, well, not really. This game isn’t all about coins; it’s got a lot of things in this game that also brings stuff from past Mario games we know very well like returning items and returning enemies with the introduction of new items and new enemies. I think this game has like the most added content since New Super Mario Bros. on the original DS.
------------
Difficulty / Gameplay..
The difficulty of New Super Mario Bros. 2 isn’t really hard, if you’re used to the Mario series especially the past two New Super Mario Bros. games, you really know on what you’re doing in this game. But if you’re new to New Super Mario Bros, It’s basically like the classic Mario games in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, just with updated graphics to fit in with the modern era of gaming, and if you aren’t familiar with the Mario series and this is your first time, then this game will be quite tough to beat and after taking a little bit of time to get used to, you’ll find this game quite easy. Normally, people plays to the end of world 8 and beat the game and call it quits, but they are a couple of people that are 100%ers and they want to fully complete the whole game with nothing left to get.
As for the Gameplay, It really has the same controls as in New Super Mario Bros on the original DS system, so it doesn’t really matter if you use the circle pad or the d-pad, they don’t really make any difference to your gameplay. But despite the similar controls, but the gameplay is completely different, like all the different power-ups you have like the return of the Super leaf, it brings back Raccoon Mario from Super Mario Bros. 3, and a bunch of other things in the game, so it’s a combination of Super Mario Bros. 3 and New Super Mario Bros together makes this game a wonderful game.
For the Difficulty and the Gameplay, I’m going to give it a 7 out of 10. I think with how much difficult this game is, it doesn’t have a whole lot of difficult to it at all if you know the Mario series very well, but if not, and then it can be tough. And I think with the coin rush that I mentioned in the Depth, I think this game mode made it a lot tougher because you got to get as much coins as you can before time runs out and complete the level.
------------
Overall..
Overall, I think the game is one outstanding Mario game and this game ends up being my 5th favorite Mario game of all times (only behind Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario 64). I think with my thoughts with this game I think this game being made from the Wii version and fit all into this game with all the unique graphics, sound effects, and the music from that game, I think that makes me want to play this game a lot more, but that is to my opinion, and for both the Addiction Level and the Depth of this game also wants to you collect all those gold coins as high as you can and it will make you want to play this game a whole lot longer than you want to which is why it’s so addicting and also it brings that classic Bowser kidnapping Peach storyline with Bowser sending his kids to do his dirty work, talk about father of the year. And the game isn’t really that hard if you’re used to the series and it brings back the controls from the New Super Mario Bros. game on the Nintendo DS system.
For the final score on New Super Mario Bros. 2, I have to give this game a 9.3 out of 10. I really like this game and it’s my most favorite modern Mario game, I think with this game, it’s got a whole lot of interesting features to try out and I think on a personal note, this game right here is a fun and entertaining game and I think you will enjoy this game a whole lot and give this game a shot. A great game in the Mario series and one of the top games in the Modern-era, give this wonderful game a shot, I think you’ll love this game. That’s it with this review.

I can pay my rent now Furret
I saw this cartridge sitting on my desk just now and felt the need to review it.
Story - 8/10New Super Mario Bros 2 is basically your average Mario platformer on steroids regarding coins. Everything in this game revolves around the collecting of coins. There is no other objective, anybody who tells you Princess Peach was kidnapped is lying to your face. She's probably enjoying a nice vacation with Bowser due to how much money he has. So it's up to you to be the richest man in the Mushroom Kingdom. This is a unique take on the classic "go help the princess" storyline, as you now have to buy her back instead.
Graphics - 9/10The graphics look so much cleaner than its predecessor, New Super Mario Bros for the DS. The game looks less pixilated and more realistic. This is especially noticeable with the fireballs and lava in this game, they look like they hurt for once haha. The final fight with Bowser where he shows up in the background also looks so epic compared to other Mario games.
Sound - 8/10Ding! Ding! Ding! That's the sound you'll hear a lot in this game. The over world and level music all fit their environment very well, with happy beach music to spooky scary ghost house music. The music has never been the main focus of a Mario platformer but you can definitely hear the effort they put into it for this game.
Depth - 9/10It's a platformer, so it already is at a disadvantage here. However this game actually makes a good effort at being more than that. It offers multiplayer for up to two players so you can get your friend and play through the game together. It also offers a Coin Rush mode where you try and collect as many coins as possible in 3 levels. Together these two features can really enhance your playtime!
Addictiveness - 10/10There's something about this game that makes me keep going back to it. Maybe it's the global Coin counter that stays updating even after starting a new save file. Maybe I just want to feel rich that day. Whatever it is, this game, as well as any platformer really, is one of the easiest games to pick up and have a good time with. It can almost act like a stress reliever if you will. The fact that you can replay it alone or with a friend and still have the same amount of fun with it as the previous time means the addictiveness is a well deserved 10.
Difficulty - 5/10This might be because I'm so used to platformers, but the Mario games have never been particularly difficult for me. This one is no different as the insane amount of coins also mean an insane amount of lives. You'll never be at risk of a game over unless you intentionally dodge every coin. Which I guess could really raise the difficulty rating, haha.
Overall - 8.1/10That brings the total to 8.1/10, which sounds like a good rating for a game based around collecting coins. The replay ability as well as the feeling of being rich really set this apart from other Mario platformers. It's not my personal favorite of the franchise (that would be the Wii version) but it's the most recent one that I've enjoyed a lot.
Thanks for reading this review! It's a bit tougher writing about a game with next to no storyline so I felt like taking a shot at it. Please tell me where you think I did well and where you think I could improve as it would really be appreciated!
