Serpentine Review Features: Gex 64 ZeegSerpentine
Hello brothers and sisters in gaming and welcome to my review. Now today I decided to challenge myself a little and review a game that I have loved sense childhood. Now let me explain, imagine a kid who was young, had just beaten Mario World, LoZ Ooc, Starfox 64, and so on and so forth, I was getting bored. Don't ask me on why, but when I was a kid my attention span was really low.
Then a friend of mine came to me and he said, "Hey buddy, why not try Gex 64?" Obviously this perked my interest, and oh my god the game is just so much fun! And granted there has been many versions of the game on many platforms, the N64 version remains the absolute best in my eyes, always being great when it comes to graphics and sound.
Okay, now that I'm not gushing over the game, lets get to the review okay? Now I'm going to do this how I do it always, by Vizzed standards. The Graphics, Sounds, Addictiveness, Story, Depth, and Difficulty. And at the end, as well as adding in my own personal enjoyment, I will give it a final score. Lets begin.
Graphics: The N64 was infamous for good graphics at the time, no doubt better then the past, and Gex is no different. The graphics are really good, especially sense it changes up the style of the levels depending on the level that your on. Its pretty cool, to be completely honest. It reminds me a lot of how Mario World pulled it off, by changing the artwork and graphics to fit the level. Only because of the world of Gex, its pulled off on a grander level. Its something that defiantly deserves a glance, and to be enjoyed. There are some instances, however, where the graphics fail in some areas, and others I question if it was a wise choice, for some level obstacles, such as lava or enemies practically blend in with the surroundings, but its okay. I can deal. So...how does a eight out of ten. Sounds legit right?
Sound: Sound effects and soundtrack was a real selling point of this game. You see, just like how the graphics fit certain themes in the game, so did the soundtrack, for it went from playful and exciting, to dark and mysterious, to even Chinese action oriented. It transitions well, and some of the bosses even have their own soundtrack, which further enhances the experience. I would say however the soundtrack does get a bit repetitive. However, I will give honorable mention to the main character Gex, for every so often, he will spout a quote or famous line from other hit media shows. Interesting right? Well it really is, so that's a cool thing right? I give this on a nine out of ten. If it wasn't for the repetitive soundtrack and quotes, then I may have enjoyed it more. But for now...well oh well.
Addictiveness: This game is really fun and very easy to get into, especially if you played any game similar in game style, such as Mario World, and enjoyed it as well. The only thing is, although its addicting, its not gripping. Honestly once you beat it, you'll probably leave it and not go back to it, unless you really enjoyed it. Me? I'm a gamer who loves to beat and experience the game fully, so that's why I enjoy this game...but at the same time its a bad fault. So...yeah eight out of ten again. Sorry, but honesty is a great policy.
Story: Honestly...there isn't a story in this game really to follow. That's probably the biggest fault I can find with this game. There's no back story on the main character, Gex, or even why he's doing what he is doing. Its a rare occurrence that I've encountered multiple times before, but this one I can't find a story. Sorry, but this gets no rating.
Depth: Again, there's not a lot of depth in the game. Even if you played it for the first time, you'll understand what you need to do immediately. Plus there is a weird glitch in the game that can have you skip by a certain point in the game. This is very strange, but if you play if fairly, the only depth is how long it would take to get to another part of the game. So...I say maybe a five out of ten.
Difficulty: A very easy answer for this part of the review for the question, is it hard? And the answer, no, its not very hard. Again if you know what your doing you will find out that the game isn't all that hard to beat an not at all that hard to master. The only difficult parts are the boss battles for how confusing they can be. So...again five out of ten. Sorry.
Okay, so now after reviewing the game and factoring Graphics, Sounds, Addictiveness, Story, Depth, and Difficulty, and then adding in my own personal enjoyment, I give this game the rating of a 7.1 out of ten giving this game the Own it rating. Its not that impressive but if your willing to give it a shot, them I'm sure you'll understand why I say this game isn't that high up in the ratings. But still, its fun and it does deserve at least a look.
Well guys thank you for reading and enjoying the review, and now if you would go and play the game, I think you'll understand why I gave it the rating. As always, brothers and sisters thank you for joining me, and remember, keep your sword sharp...for the revolution is coming. Until then, later.

Tail time. yoshirulez!
Gex Enter the gecko is one of my favorites, for it was one of the first 64 games i have ever played. The graphics were awesome to me. The horns and stuff with the music, the difficulty, everything was good. The puns with the level names was a bit funny. such as frankensteinfeld and No weddings and a funeral, from mao tse tongue to www. Dotcom.com And references to movies and tv shows, such as giligex isle and The spy who loved himself. and Samurai night fever.. and the bonus levels, such as thursday the 12th and In drag net. Now, the random phrases gex says can be annoying, yet some of them i like, such as REDRUM REDRUM and Don't take carrer advice from joe piscapoe. (Insert proper spelling of his name here). That being said, I would like to say that They could have done a little better with the jumping and stuff. It may seem pretty cut and dry, but it's rather hard to control. Like Banjo-Tooie. I had a hard time with the controls on that, But it was a pretty good platformer also. Ahem.. now that i went off subject.. let's continue with the review.
Graphics: I give it a 10. Why do you ask? Because everything is so smooth. I couldn't find any sort of graphical error in it. The characters are Nice and pretty. But, The enemies are pretty cheesy looking. Such as the shark. It just looks so... Lactose-ey. If that's a word. But they did do a good job on the final boss, Rez. Rez is this robot-cyborg-alien-mutant-freak-thing. It looks pretty good with the metal and the lightning and stuff. yeah.
Sound: 10 Again. The sound is much better than Diddy kong racing or Mario Kart 64. Instead of boring explosions and crashing noises, You get electricity noises and shattering noises and Less generic boinging sounds. Honestly, I doubt they could do better. I mean, How would you do any better? I certainly don't know. Oh, and the lazergunbot things, they don't sound like "Pyewm Pyewm" They sound like "Whoaoaahhh Bshhhh!!!!" Much better than anything else i've heard. I hope i'm not sounding like a crazy person as i type this.
Music: 10 yet again. The music is much better than what i've heard from select titles such as Super mario 64 or The legend of zelda: Ocarina of time. Sure they're is some old favorites of mine, But this tops that 100 fold. The horns and stuff, they remind me of Men at work, and Rocket from the crypt. I like the sounds of horns. Even though they sometimes can be annoying, they sound really cool to me. And the music at No weddings and a funeral, With the whirring and the tv voices and stuff, really adds to the affect.
Addictiveness: 10 again.. yep. This game is definetly hard. I've had it for about 5 years and just recently beat it. And i haven't even got all the extra stuff. The bosses were pretty dissapointing, but the levels were sooo hard. It's crazy. You could spend like, 17 lives on one level. I think i did that once. They space levels are the hardest. You have to consider, Falling to your doom, Dying of lack of air, AND hitpoints.. not to mention that there are ALIENS WITH LIGHTSABERS that try to kill you. and robot things with laser guns. Then there is the toon tv levels. They are the easiest. I like them because they look like someone was crazy, and decided to not leave the office, and like, Wreck the entire levels. It's cool. With the weird rocks that spit out carrots, to the dancing flowers, and the giant carrots and the tree peoples. And the weird fat ladies falling from the sky, and the rainbows you can jump on. I think i better stop... i'm spoiling too much.
Story:I give it a 7. You're this gecko dude and you're collecting remotes to stop a giant robot dude. If that makes any sense. It doesn't have MUCH of a story, but what there is, is good. It doesn't have as much of as a story as it's sequal, Gex 3 Deep cover gecko. Now you may think, "Oh, it doesn't have much of a story, but the gameplay seems cool." If you ARE thinking that, Then you're right. It's awesome. And it can never be made better.
Depth: 10 Again AGAIN! You have to collect red remotes, and gold remotes, and white remotes. But to get the gold remotes you have to get the white remotes. and to do THAT you have to find them, and get a bunch of carrots and cans and other stuff. Then, after that, you have to collect all of the things inside the bonus tvs to get the gold remotes. rather hard and long process, but it's worth it. and i mean COMPLETELY WORTH IT!
Difficulty: 10. Yep, again. Like i said, i spent 5 years playing it and just recently beat it. You can try all you want, but You're gonna lose a whole lot of lives. lots and lots. forever. Until you finally get EVERYTHING and you might not even get that. i certainly haven't. I mean sure! The bosses aren't very hard. but like i said above, The levels are REALLY SUPER DUPER MEGA AWESOME HARD!! And the boss is hard too. like, super hard. Yep.
Anyways, it may not seem fun at first, but it gets better. Way better. I feel like playing it again... maybe i will. I don't know. I hope you have lots of fun spending 5 years to beat it like me. I sure had fun. and it passes the time a lot. It really is all that and a bag of Barbeque potato chips. I mean, if it weren't would I be reviewing this? Would I play this? Would I treasure this game for all eternity? Maybe, maybe not.. I have no idea. I'm too indecisive. anyways, that's my review. hope someone likes it.
