I think I enjoyed games more then.  I was younger and had a laser focus so the difficulty was never a problem.  I was able to obsess over a game to a degree which I can't muster these days.  
There were a lot of great games from the 90's but I don't know that it's fair to say they are better.  Just different.

I think nostalgia can be really hit and miss.  Games predating the N64 PS1 era tend to hold up pretty well.  Once you get into the early days of 3d games though most are best left to memories.  I played Goldeneye a few weeks ago and was surprised as to how poorly it had aged.  
The idea that nothing new is good is just an artifact from getting old.  You see people say the same things about music, tv, books, and even kids.  Or in some cases it is just hipsters being ironic only liking games that were made before they were born.
If someone refuses to move into the future it is best just to leave them in the past.

Growing up my older brothers had an Apple 2GS and a ton of text adventures. They were definitely hard to wrap my head around but I have always had a soft spot for those games. Classics like The Wishbringer, The Lurking Horror, The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and way more than I can remember were wonderful games. Also not a bad way to trick kids into reading.

I just started playing amnesia and it is incredible. I know its not all that obscure but it is terrifying. I have not even seen an enemy yet and I am almost too scared to move into the next room. I know this is not really the place but this game is worth a look. It almost didn't come out and the developers worked without a paycheck for quite some time. I used to love Totally Rad when I was a kid. Going back and playing it now I am not sure why. I had forgotten about that one though. The NES had a ton of unadulterated weirdness.

I find that the story in mgs is even more strange and confusing than the bosses. I have played all of them except the psp ones. Playing number 4 on ps3 I have no clue what is going on.

Love contra. Never has a game made me so happy and want to scream at the same time. I also love the resident evil series. I was in middle school when the first one came out. My best friend and I would play trough it over and over again because there was a rumor that you would get a special extra gory ending if you beat it in under two hours. Sadly despite breaking the two hour mark numerous times there was no special ending. Good times though. That game was super creepy when it came out.

I really enjoyed Ico as well as Shadow of the Colossus. I found an old game magazine that had a preview for shadow but it was called wanda and the colossus. Just an odd little bit of trivia but thanks. Ico is a great game I have not thought of in awhile.

There are some mature rated titles that I feel are ok for somebody under the age of 17, but I think that needs to be decided by people on a game by game basis. My biggest sticking point is young kids on xbox live. When I have children they will not be allowed to play online until their voice has changed and they know that screaming, singing, and other general shenanigans are not acceptable.

Run Like Hell on the PS2 is pretty funny. Between the bad writing and the terrible voice acting the game is hysterical without trying to be. If you can find it for cheap its worth a look but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it.

I think if you have kids it might be worth the money. On the other hand I don't feel that it offers anything to serious gamers. If people want bad motion controls they should just buy a Wii.
