Sonic or Mario, which retro gaming mascot do you prefer?

Whenever I hear someone say "Mario has no personality" or  "Mario is dull", I just can't help to cringe sometimes. Mario DOES (or at the very least, did) in fact have a personality that people tend to completely forget about or just flat out ignore for the sake of downplaying him. He's optimistic, happy-go-lucky, competitive, and a bit of a Deadpan Snarker sometimes. (Especially in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.) Nintendo is mostly to blame for Mario being blank-slated nowadays since they fear characterizing their mascot would alienate members of the audience, but I hope one day we will see the return of the true Mario.

Heck, as someone who even grew up as a SEGA kid, I always liked Mario more than Sonic.

~I personally don't think The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Final Fantasy 7 are overrated anymore. 
~I liked Paper Mario Sticker Star.
~I like both the Mario and Sonic franchises equally, however I like Mario more as a character than Sonic.
~Banjo-Kazooie is okay but kinda boring. 
~We need a Pokemon Ranger 4.
~Wario Master of Disguise is painfully underrated.
