Get a new PC...Upgrading a machine that came with XP is usually not worth it and often you will not be able to find drivers for some of your hardware. You can buy a new machine for 300-400 bucks with windows 7 while the license for windows 7 is going to cost you 100. Not cost efficient.

Whoops. Missed the laptop part. Does the audio file just not open or does it give an error? Also check the function keys. A lot of laptops have a volume adjust located there that over rides windows audio settings. Finally look up the drivers on the manufacturer's website and find your model. They should have updated sound drivers for the laptop that might help.

I see this is an older post but here's what I'll use(IT Admin of 10 years experince)

CCleaner is used to clear temp caches and registry issues which can often clear some issues as a lot of malware/viruses will reside in temp folders.

Malware Bytes as recommended earlier is good.

Kaspersky TDSSKiller is a rootkit removal kit. Runs very quickly and it is pretty effective.

ESET Online scanner is a free once off run AV scan.
http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner-popup/

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6.2 There is a newer version but it's given me issues recently.
http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/ Go to the bottom under other downloads to find it.

ComboFix is a pretty heavy duty one and only recommend in severe cases after other options have been explored. Be very careful to follow the prompts and let it finish completely.

There are also several Linux based boot disk AV solutions but I'm not up to date on them as nowadays we just ghost them if we can't clear them with the above.

I would suggest running these in safe mode if possible by hitting F8 during boot.

Hope you got it running ok!

While there may be a audio port on the front it may not be connected or it could be disabled. If there is a rear audio jack try those as they are usually built into the motherboard.

haitamchouiekh : Also try tdsskiller from kaspersky and ESET Online Scanner.  TDSskiller is a rootkit cleaner and ESET online scanner is a free scanner that runs through your browser.  Both free and very good.

You can usually trace an IP is a general region and service provider. This is usually just a pool of temporary leased IPs used by the ISP. To get an actual location that the IP belongs to at a specific time requires a subpeona served to the ISP. You can have some fun with the tracert command btw. It traces each jump along the way to that IP and often time the routers will have names reflecting the city or region it's located in.

Ad ware, no virus involved. It is rumored to use cookies to track browsing habits. You can unistall it using Add/Remove programs then a program like Hijack this or Spybot to clear the lingering entries it leaves all over your system.

Sounds like you have a corrupt OS install if it won't even load into Safe Mode. If you try to load safe mode it should list the system files as they load. Does it consistently stop in the same place? I'd suggest doing a repair install from the OS disk with the available info. It'll keep your settings and applications usually but there is a risk of damage to data files. Here's a link to to procedure http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm Good luck!!!

Left 4 Dead if you play alot online and want a good co-op experience with 4 players in 1st person shooter format. Single player is sorta lame, just multi-player with bots.

Resident Evil 5 is better for local co-op with one friend and solo. I'd take resident evil 5 as I didn't really like the feel of L4D.

While MMOs can be fun with a good group of friends I'd play a standard RPG any day for the richness of story.

It's a long shot but you can try copying the files from the disk to the hard drive and running the install from there. That's worked for me on some older games I've had that issue with (Dungeon Keeper 2). Another thing that has helped me in the past was to run the install executable in compatibility mode. It's not a really old game but since it is a new OS you may be running into unforeseen errors due to that. After that I think I'm about of of ideas. Good luck!
