Hey there! So, you want to hack SMW, but have absolutely no clue of the whats, whens and hows, right? Well read on! What is the main tool for SMW Hacking? The tool is called Lunar Magic. It is a powerful drag-and-drop Level/Overworld editor. It was and is being created by FuSoYa, of smwcentral.net. You can head over there to get the latest version. HELP! Lunar Magic looks too hard! Not to worry, some very kind people on YouTube have uploaded tutorials which deal with it. Watch a few, and you should get the hang of it. Lunar Magic also contains a help file, though that may not be of that much use if you don't know the basics. What are screens? Screens are imaginary divisions which Lunar Magic makes in the game, to make organization and placement easier. They also hold the main roles when handling the Exits and Entrances in and out of the level. Screens cause the generators (discussed later) placed in them to activate when Mario reaches them. What are patches, blocks, sprites, etc. ? - Patches are small amounts of code which run during game-play, which can alter the behavior of the game, fix glitches, and so on. For example, there is one patch which can make SMW Mario wall-jump. - Blocks or Custom Blocks are...well...blocks. Actually, in Lunar Magic, blocks have a different meaning, and don't always mean the things floating in the air which Mario smashes his head against. They can activate when Mario steps on them, touches their sides, etc. Blocks build up the whole level, and yes, even ground tiles and pipes are considered blocks. More blocks can be found in the blocks section of SMWCentral, which have a lot of different capabilities. - Sprites are the things which can move, and can interact with the player in many more ways. Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and Yoshi are some examples. Sprites occur in 3 types, Main Sprites, Generators, and Launchers/Shooters. 1. Main Sprites are the basic sprites which can interact with Mario. They are usually visible. Examples of sprites are: Goombas, Yoshi, Mushrroms, and Fire Flowers. 2. Generators are sprites which do interact with Mario but in different ways. When Mario reaches the screen in which a generator is placed, it activates, which makes it play it's role from that screen onwards, until the end of the level or until other generators activate which stop them. They can also cause changes in the level behavior itself. An example of a generator is the one which causes Bullet Bills to fly onto the screen, even though their launchers are nowhere to be seen. 3. Shooters are sprites which do not interact with Mario. Their main job is the generation of another sprite, but from a single point. For example, every time a bullet bill launcher is placed on the level, a bullet bill shooter must be placed inside it for it to actually work. Can I use different music instead of the original ones? Yes, of course you can! You can find custom made music in the Music section, along with music from other games. Where can I get a ROM? Only Google can help you there. I can't and won't tell. Now that I'm done with a level/hack, what do I do with it? Well, after playing it and testing it yourself, you can have it posted to Vizzed or SMWCentral. Can I change the Overworld? Yes, you can. Lunar Magic comes with an in-built OW editor, which can alter the looks and paths which Mario follows. It may be a bit hard to learn at first, because you need to follow some guidelines in order to make the OW actually work and look great. Will I be posting tutorials? No, but I will happily answer any questions that you may have, as to the best of my capability. Any more questions? Post them down below! MechaMento : Thanks a lot for the advice. By the way, I'm working on a Super Mario World : Retro Remix, inspired by an NSMBW hack of the same name. If I wanted to attract people to this hack, and ask them to help me in these forums, where would e a good place to post about it? Of course, I am on SMWCentral and I will sooner or later make a thread on this hack there as well. If you want to find me, I go by the same name there as well. (Yes, I know i'm lazy.) Thanks a lot! OK, let's get down to business: Main : "Super Mario Bros. Deluxe" is a great Super Mario World ROM hack, and it is clear that the creator has put some effort into it, although the 1st level gives away the idea of the game. It lacks in some places, but that we will discuss later on. Overall, I give this game 8.5/10. I would recommend this game to people who are looking to just kill time, and not do anything serious for a while. Game-play: The game-play is interesting for the first few levels, but it gets boring after some time, when the player realizes that He/She/It has to play the original game's levels all over, but with SMW Mario physics. Some aspects of the levels were somewhat disappointing, like the fact that each Bowser at the end of the castles are just SMW fire-breathing statues. I have some experience in Lunar Magic myself, and with some more efforts, the creator could have a custom-boss or a proper, living Bowser. Flagpoles are, well, I don't even know what they were. It was a great flashback to the old times, though, I'll give you that. Graphics: SMB-3 styled graphics look beautiful on levels, but I can't say the same with the Overworld. It looks just too plain. Level tiles won't disappear, and just leaving them golden once completed just doesn't fit. On a positive note, the graphics in the levels were swell, with decorations and backgrounds in their proper places. Music: I don't have to say much about this. Listening to the same OW music again and again get's boring as heck. Level music seems in order, with proper music and sound effects in their right places.? The game seems to have a lot of potential, and if the gaps are filled up properly, this could be a perfect SMB remake. ?A good game, though it doesn't have that "oomph" if you know what I mean. So, um, hi? Anyways, I'm Shreerocks1324, age 15. I joined Vizzed.com on 9th of September, 2013, so you may see that I'm very new. In fact, I'm not even half done exploring the website. To be frank, I joined up to bypass the 7 game limit per day for guests in the RGR, because I loved the games there. But after joining up, I had noticed how big and awesome this site is, so I kept the account active. Anyways, I have some experience in the hacking of Super Mario World, using Lunar Magic. I also like emulation in general, but real games do have their charms! So, that's, uh, about it. I hope I have a great time here, and ........... Bananas? Anyways, I'm Shreerocks1324, age 15.
