maybe you're just looking in the wrong place... most japanese based RPGS are bound to follow the anime code when it comes to characters. But if you look at companies like Bioware (knights of the old republic, Mass Effect, Jade Empire) its as if they're not even aware of conventions, but it could be argued that a sci-fi platform allows more flexibility with characters

Rare candies dont increase EV's but EV's have a maximum amount... if you're pokemon can get a ribbon from someone in the market in the town with the 8th gym then you've max'd them

anyway... i been watching hellsing, and it kinda begs a question of ethics "would you become a vampire?" this is at the cost of stuff like your soul and feeding off of death and inability to enjoy sunlight and garlic... but the benefits are strength, hypnosis and seduction spells, immortality, polymorphism... all around cool stuff
