This is the game that started the dragon quest(Dragon warrior in the states). You are a lone hero who sets out to defeat the evil dragonlord. While it may seem a bit dated by today's standards, so much of what has made the DQ series enjoyable is present here, right down to the deceptively smiling slimes.
The game play is relatively simple, kill enemies get gold/exp, level and buy equipment. There are many places to explore, caves, towns, ruins and the dragon lord's castle itself.
As I said in an earlier review of dragon warrior, you need to speak to the king in starting castle to save, when you cross bridges the enemies will become stronger (and bring stronger rewards for their defeat) Torches are needed while walking in caves early on, while you do gain a light spell it's best to save the mana for healing or the offensive burst if needed. Swamps are another problem you'll take minor damage crossing them, as well as barriers(green dotted squares, and blue with diagonal lines). One of the hardest parts of the game is due to how saving works, it makes traveling a bit more dangerous and much work can be lost so always carry a chimera wing, that will zoom you back home.
Towns have shops where you can purchase equipment, items and find a place to sleep/heal (inns usually). I've always prefered doing a little extra grinding for the 2 step increase in armor and weapon, as well as using caves to "farm" items and gold.
As far as items, medical herbs heal, antidote cures poison, torches cast light (tho light spell creates a bigger circle) the water is useful for preventing random encounters of monsters that are weaker then you are.
Overall If you are looking for a good oldschool jrpg, you cannot go wrong with this game, in fact nintendo power once had Dragon warrior as a give away for a subscription, along with maps and a strategy guide, a wise move considering this was my starting point for 20 some odd years of playing role playing games.

http://thecinemasnob.com/2010/09/09/stoned-gremlin-productions-presents-game-boys.aspx

This guy does movie reviews usually, found him via another site, anyway.. the movie is strange and not all that great production wise, but if you're into retro games, check it out.
Lots of retrogame humor, the movie is about a group of friends that decided to throw a party trying to score more then 5000 points on custer's revenge (yeah.. but eh the game is amusingly notorious) to cheer their friend up who just got dumped by his gf who he didnt like all that much so he uses this as a chance to ask out the cute girl at the retro game store.
whlie its not made all that great it's pretty well written and fairly funny rather clerks like but for gamers, the language is a bit coarse, say pg13ish.. but much younger wouldn't get all the 2600/nes humor anyway

What are some others that you might know?
Many of the earlier examples were the only way that programmers were able to get credit for their work. The first one (they say.. ) is from adventure on the 2600. which in itself was an adventure to find.
Here are some other retro game easter eggs
on the 2600

Adventure:
Inside the black castle catacombs (on difficulty level 2 or 3), embedded in the south wall of a sealed chamber (accessible only with the bridge), is an "invisible" 1-pixel object referred to as the grey dot.[6] One must "bounce" the player cursor along the bottom wall to "grab" the dot. The dot is not actually invisible, but simply the same color as the wall and is easily seen when placed in a catacombs passage or over a normal wall. The dot is not attracted to the magnet, unlike most other objects in Adventure.

Bringing this dot to the east end of the corridor below the golden castle while other differently-colored objects are present causes the wall object to also become 'invisible', allowing the player to pass into a room displaying the words "Created by Warren Robinett".

Carnival
Holding down the fire button as you power the system on causes a dot to appear in the top row of targets. Shooting the dot before it leaves the screen (it then turns into a duck) will reveal the programmer's name.

Yar's Revenge
Kill the Swirl in mid-air. Position Yar so that spot on it's back is in the same vertical plane as the black "streak". Programmer's initials will appear after explosion (HSWWSH = Howard Scott Warshaw)

Missile Command
SELECT game 13(?). Let missiles rain on all your cities and waste all your missiles without scoring any points. The rubble of the rightmost city will change to "RF", the programmer's initials (Rob Fulop)

Desert Falcon
Get a superpower and swim near the top of a lake (before you lose it) to make the programmer's initials appear. Easiest way is to get invincibility (bird-cane-feather).

Communist Mutants from Space
Hold down the joystick button while loading and the "HI" on the score screen will change to "SHL", the author's initials. (Steven H. Landrum)
