Final Fantasy VII has a strong battle system, strong magic system, and strong character development. Square-Enix should definitely remake it for all consoles so that everyone has the opportunity to play it. I might be a little late here, but it is very possible to win, using the right materia, using only Cloud. In the final area, you have the opportunity to split the party up to go in different directions, and Cloud was more than enough to obliterate the enemies, Tonberrys included. However, I digress.

Barrett is a great choice because of his usual back-row location. Tifa has a strong set of limit breaks that deal loads of damage. Cid is another excellent choice because of his solid stats. Ultimately, however, it's the characters that matter less and the materia that matters more. What you should do is make sure that you have strong materia than worry about who is carrying it.
