So after defeating the 8th gym leader I couldn't find the person to get the Waterfall HM anywhere so suspecting my game was glitched I closed and reopened the game without saving. The last time I saved was before I beat the 8th gym leader but this time I am enclosed within his little area with him.

It's like the switches you had to pull to get there hadn't been pulled at all so I am essentially stranded on this side of the lava pit. I've tried rebeating him a couple of times but after the battle I face this same problem still. Is there any way to fix this? I'd really rather not restart so close to the elite four.

For whatever reason I have put off giving this game a try for quite some time but I am SO HAPPY I finally gave it a shot. This game is probably easier than any other Pokémon game I've played but it also does not lose my interest. Being able to do things like have a Charizard and a Feraligator on the same team without going out of your way to import anything into your game is so great, and the way the game is set up it's easy for you to get Pokémon that need to be evolved through trade. This game is the perfect study break and I am very likely to replay it whenever it's Midterms/Finals.
